In a significant development for the Indian Air Force’s operational backbone, Air Marshal Yalla Umesh today assumed charge as the 39th Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Maintenance Command, headquartered in Nagpur. His appointment marks a pivotal phase for the IAF’s technological, repair and overhaul ecosystem at a time when the force is rapidly modernising, inducting indigenous platforms, and upgrading legacy fleets to meet the growing security demands of a complex regional environment.
A Distinguished Engineer-Leader Takes Command
Air Marshal Yalla Umesh brings with him a rich legacy of engineering excellence, leadership depth and decades of frontline experience across the IAF’s combat, transport, and guided weapon fleets. Commissioned into the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) Branch, he quickly emerged as a leading technical mind within the force. A Category ‘A’ Aeronautical Engineer—an elite qualification reflecting exceptional professional competence—he has built his career on strengthening maintenance doctrines, engineering reliability and operational readiness across diverse platforms. His academic achievements mirror his professional stature. Apart from holding a Doctorate in Management, he possesses postgraduate degrees in Industrial Engineering and Management, and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is an alumnus of premier military institutions including the prestigious College of Defence Management and the National Defence College, the apex strategic education hub for India’s senior military leadership.
Leadership Across the IAF’s Most Sensitive Technical Appointments
Across his illustrious service, Air Marshal Umesh has held multiple critical appointments that established him as one of the IAF’s most experienced engineering commanders. As Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Engineering) at Air Headquarters, he supervised large-scale maintenance networks, policy formulation and technical modernisation projects spanning the entire Air Force. As Air Commodore Engineering (Transport), he oversaw the engineering management of the IAF’s vast transport fleet—ranging from strategic airlifters to tactical support aircraft—which are vital for operations from Ladakh to the island territories. His tenure as Air Officer Commanding of a Guided Weapon Base Repair Depot placed him at the core of the IAF’s missile maintenance ecosystem, responsible for deep-level repairs, life-extension programmes, and sensitive overhaul processes. He also served in a multinational environment as the Chief Engineering Officer at a UN-operated airfield in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he coordinated multi-country aviation assets under high-risk conditions. Before taking charge of Maintenance Command today, he served as Director General (Aircraft) at Air Headquarters, a powerful and critical role overseeing aircraft lifecycle management, overhaul planning, fleet upgrade pipelines, and technical coordination with HAL, DRDO and global OEMs. His contribution has been widely acknowledged, and he has been honoured with the Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service to the nation.

भारतीय वायु सेना के संचालन और युद्धक क्षमता की रीढ़ माने जाने वाले मेंटेनेंस कमांड के नेतृत्व में आज एक महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव हुआ। एयर मार्शल यल्ला उमेश ने 01 दिसंबर 2025 को मेंटेनेंस कमांड के 39वें एयर ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ के रूप में पदभार संभाला। यह नियुक्ति भारतीय वायु सेना के लिए उस समय आई है जब संगठन तेजी से आधुनिकीकरण और स्वदेशी विमान प्रणालियों के आधुनिकीकरण की दिशा में अग्रसर है। उनके नेतृत्व में कमांड को नई तकनीकी, औद्योगिक और लॉजिस्टिक क्षमताओं के साथ आधुनिक बनाया जाएगा, जिससे पूरे देश की वायु शक्ति और ऑपरेशनल तत्परता में मजबूती आएगी।

एयर मार्शल यल्ला उमेश भारतीय वायु सेना के एरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियरिंग (मैकेनिकल) शाखा से कमीशन किए गए। उन्होंने अपनी तकनीकी दक्षता, नेतृत्व क्षमता और ऑपरेशनल समझ के कारण तेजी से प्रतिष्ठा अर्जित की। वे ‘कैटेगरी ए’ एरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियर हैं, जो पेशेवर उत्कृष्टता का उच्चतम मानक दर्शाता है।
उनकी शैक्षणिक योग्यता भी उनके करियर की तरह ही प्रभावशाली रही है। उन्होंने मैकेनिकल इंजीनियरिंग में स्नातक की डिग्री, औद्योगिक इंजीनियरिंग और मैनेजमेंट में पोस्टग्रेजुएट डिग्री तथा प्रबंधन में डॉक्टरेट की डिग्री प्राप्त की है। इसके अलावा, वह कॉलेज ऑफ डिफेंस मैनेजमेंट और नेशनल डिफेंस कॉलेज के पूर्व छात्र हैं, जो भारतीय सैन्य नेतृत्व में रणनीतिक और प्रबंधन कौशल विकसित करने के लिए सर्वोच्च संस्थान माने जाते हैं।
आईएएफ के महत्वपूर्ण तकनीकी पदों पर नेतृत्व
एयर मार्शल उमेश ने अपने सेवाकाल में कई महत्वपूर्ण तकनीकी और कमांड जिम्मेदारियां निभाई हैं। एयर स्टाफ इंजीनियरिंग के असिस्टेंट चीफ के रूप में उन्होंने पूरे वायु सेना में मेंटेनेंस नेटवर्क, नीति निर्माण और तकनीकी आधुनिकीकरण की प्रक्रिया का नेतृत्व किया। एयर कमोडोर इंजीनियरिंग (ट्रांसपोर्ट) के रूप में उन्होंने रणनीतिक और टैक्टिकल एयरलिफ्ट संचालन की पूरी इंजीनियरिंग जिम्मेदारी संभाली, जो भारत के अलग-अलग इलाकों में आपातकालीन और नियमित अभियानों के लिए बेहद महत्वपूर्ण है।
इसके अलावा, गाइडेड वेपन बेस रिपेयर डिपो के एयर ऑफिसर कमांडिंग के रूप में उन्होंने मिसाइल और निर्देशित हथियारों के मरम्मत और जीवनकाल विस्तार कार्यक्रमों की जिम्मेदारी निभाई। उन्होंने अंतरराष्ट्रीय माहौल में भी कार्य किया, जब वे डीआर कांगो में संयुक्त राष्ट्र संचालित एयरफील्ड में चीफ इंजीनियरिंग ऑफिसर के पद पर तैनात थे।
मेंटेनेंस कमांड संभालने से पहले वे एयर हेडक्वार्टर में डायरेक्टर जनरल (एयरक्राफ्ट) के रूप में कार्यरत थे, जहां उन्होंने विमानों के जीवनचक्र प्रबंधन, ओवरहाल योजना, फ्लीट अपग्रेड और HAL, DRDO व वैश्विक OEMs के साथ तकनीकी समन्वय का नेतृत्व किया। उनके इस योगदान के लिए उन्हें विशिष्ट सेवा पदक (VSM) से सम्मानित किया गया।

एयर मार्शल उमेश एयर मार्शल विजय कुमार गर्ग के उत्तराधिकारी बने हैं, जिन्होंने 30 नवंबर 2025 को 39 वर्षों की उत्कृष्ट और समर्पित सेवा के बाद सेवानिवृत्ति ली। एयर मार्शल गर्ग ने अपने कार्यकाल में आईएएफ की लॉजिस्टिक और मेंटेनेंस नींव को मजबूत किया, स्वदेशी मरम्मत समाधान और फ्लाइट उपलब्धता में सुधार सुनिश्चित किया। उनके नेतृत्व में मेंटेनेंस कमांड ने ऑपरेशन सिंदूर और अन्य उच्च तैयारियों के दौरान महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई।
भारतीय वायु सेना की रीढ़: मेंटेनेंस कमांड
मेंटेनेंस कमांड भारतीय वायु सेना की ‘वॉर फाइटिंग क्षमता’ की रीढ़ है। यह कमांड विमानों, हेलिकॉप्टरों, गाइडेड वेपन, रडार और ग्राउंड सिस्टम्स के ओवरहाल, मरम्मत और जीवन विस्तार कार्यक्रमों की जिम्मेदारी निभाता है। भारत द्वारा तैनात नई प्रणालियों जैसे तेजस Mk-1A, C-295, अपग्रेडेड Su-30MKI, आधुनिक हेलिकॉप्टर और स्वदेशी ड्रोन के चलते कमांड की जिम्मेदारी और बढ़ गई है।
