BRO Project Swastik Celebrates 65 Years of Engineering Excellence and Strategic Service in Sikkim
Gangtok, October 1, 2025: In the lofty mountains of Sikkim, where roads carve lifelines through treacherous valleys and snowbound passes, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Project Swastik has stood as a symbol of service, resilience, and engineering excellence for 65 years. On October 1, 2025, Project Swastik proudly celebrated its 65th Raising Day, marking over six decades of nation-building in some of the most difficult and strategically critical terrain of the Eastern Himalayas.
Six Decades of Nation-Building in the Himalayas
Since its establishment in 1960, Project Swastik has remained at the forefront of India’s border infrastructure development in Sikkim. It has constructed and maintained over 1,412 kilometres of roads and 80 major bridges, knitting together the remote valleys, forward posts, and defence installations of the state.
In the past ten years alone, the project has delivered over 350 kilometres of roads, 26 bridges, and one tunnel, ensuring year-round connectivity in regions often cut off by heavy snowfall, landslides, or glacial activity. Each milestone is not merely an engineering feat but a strategic necessity, providing vital mobility for the Armed Forces and much-needed access for the people of Sikkim.
BRO personnel, working in extreme conditions, have also helped restore connectivity during natural disasters, including Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), cloudbursts, and the devastating floods of the Teesta River, showcasing their unparalleled commitment to resilience and recovery.
Commemorating the 65th Raising Day
The Raising Day celebrations began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Swastik Memorial, honouring the fallen personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The solemn moment was followed by a Sainik Sammelan, where officers and personnel gathered to reflect on the organisation’s achievements and challenges.
The day also featured a Barakhana (community feast), cultural programs, and the colourful Swastik Mela, bringing together officers, personnel, and their families in an atmosphere of camaraderie and unity. A highlight of the day was the inauguration of the renovated Unit Regimental Canteen, alongside interfaith prayers at the Sarv Dharam Sthal, reinforcing the inclusive ethos and spiritual resilience of BRO’s workforce.
Focus on Welfare: A Backbone Built on People
At the heart of Project Swastik’s success lies its dedicated workforce, particularly the Casual Paid Labourers (CPLs), who work shoulder-to-shoulder with officers and engineers in some of the world’s toughest terrains. Recognising their invaluable role, Project Swastik announced a series of welfare measures on this occasion:
- Upgraded habitats to provide safer and more comfortable living conditions in high-altitude zones.
- Provision of protective gear, ensuring safety during extreme weather and hazardous construction tasks.
- Health camps aimed at addressing medical needs and improving the well-being of labourers and their families.
These initiatives reaffirm the BRO’s principle that its people are its strength, and their welfare remains central to its operational success.
Rs. 1,152.66 Crore Infrastructure Boost
Looking ahead, BRO Project Swastik has unveiled ambitious plans to further strengthen Sikkim’s strategic connectivity. Infrastructure projects worth Rs. 1,152.66 crore have been sanctioned, including:
- Construction of the Western Sikkim Highway.
- Upgradation of National Highway 310A and NH 310AG, both critical arterial routes linking the state capital and forward areas.
These projects will not only bolster the operational mobility of the Armed Forces but also serve as a catalyst for regional development, tourism, and trade. Importantly, they will incorporate advanced engineering practices, including:
- Geotextiles to strengthen roadbeds in difficult terrain.
- Slope stabilisation techniques to mitigate landslide risks.
- Avalanche mitigation systems for uninterrupted year-round access.
- Eco-friendly construction methods, aligning with India’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
DG BRO’s Call for Continued Dedication
On this landmark occasion, Director General BRO, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, praised the commitment and professionalism of Project Swastik. “The men and women of BRO have consistently demonstrated resilience and dedication in the most challenging terrains. Project Swastik embodies the spirit of service and sacrifice, and its work is vital to India’s security and connectivity in the Eastern Himalayas,” he said.
He urged all personnel to continue their mission with renewed energy and innovation, highlighting that the upcoming projects would play a decisive role in India’s strategic preparedness and the socio-economic transformation of Sikkim.

सिक्किम की ऊंची पहाड़ियों और दुर्गम इलाकों में वर्षों से अदम्य साहस और इंजीनियरिंग दक्षता का प्रतीक बन चुका बॉर्डर रोड्स ऑर्गनाइजेशन (बीआरओ) का प्रोजेक्ट स्वस्तिक 1 अक्टूबर 2025 को अपनी 65वीं वर्षगांठ मनाते हुए एक बार फिर देश सेवा और विकास की गाथा लिख गया। 1960 में स्थापित इस परियोजना ने बीते छह दशकों से भी अधिक समय में भारतीय सेना की परिचालन आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करने के साथ-साथ सीमावर्ती क्षेत्रों के सामाजिक-आर्थिक जीवन में परिवर्तन लाने में ऐतिहासिक योगदान दिया है।
1412 किलोमीटर सड़कें और 80 बड़े पुल
प्रोजेक्ट स्वस्तिक की उपलब्धियां अपने आप में मील का पत्थर हैं। अब तक इस परियोजना के अंतर्गत 1,412 किलोमीटर से अधिक सड़कें और 80 बड़े पुलों का निर्माण और रखरखाव किया जा चुका है। यही नहीं, बीते एक दशक में ही 350 किलोमीटर से अधिक सड़कें, 26 पुल और एक सुरंग सफलतापूर्वक तैयार की गईं, जिससे न केवल दूरदराज़ घाटियों तक सालभर की कनेक्टिविटी सुनिश्चित हुई बल्कि अग्रिम मोर्चों पर तैनात भारतीय सेना की आवाजाही और आपूर्ति श्रृंखला भी सुदृढ़ हुई।
प्राकृतिक आपदाओं से संघर्ष में भी डटा रहा स्वस्तिक
सिक्किम के भौगोलिक और जलवायु संबंधी खतरों के बीच प्रोजेक्ट स्वस्तिक ने कई चुनौतियों का सामना किया है। ग्लेशियल लेक आउटबर्स्ट फ्लड (GLOFs), बादल फटने और तीस्ता नदी की बाढ़ जैसी आपदाओं से प्रभावित होकर भी यह परियोजना कभी अपने कदम पीछे नहीं खींची। इन कठिन परिस्थितियों में भी बीआरओ के इंजीनियरों और जवानों ने लगातार सड़कें और पुल बनाए रखे, जिससे देश की रणनीतिक और मानवीय आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति होती रही।
समारोह में शौर्य और एकता का उत्सव
65वीं वर्षगांठ समारोह की शुरुआत स्वस्तिक मेमोरियल पर श्रद्धांजलि अर्पण के साथ हुई। इसके बाद सैनिक सम्मेलन, बराखाना, सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम और जीवंत स्वस्तिक मेला आयोजित हुआ, जिसने अधिकारियों, जवानों और उनके परिवारों के बीच सौहार्द और एकजुटता का माहौल बनाया। सर्व धर्म स्थल पर प्रार्थना और यूनिट रेजिमेंटल कैंटीन के नवीनीकरण का उद्घाटन भी इस अवसर पर हुआ, जिसने उत्सव को और विशेष बना दिया।
श्रमिकों के कल्याण के लिए नई पहल
प्रोजेक्ट स्वस्तिक ने इस अवसर पर अपने कैज़ुअल पेड लेबरर्स (CPLs) के कल्याण के लिए कई नई योजनाओं की घोषणा की। इसमें उन्नत आवासीय सुविधाएं, सुरक्षात्मक उपकरण और स्वास्थ्य शिविर शामिल हैं। बीआरओ का यह कदम इस तथ्य को और मजबूत करता है कि परियोजना की रीढ़ बनने वाले श्रमिकों का जीवन और सुरक्षा सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता है।
1,152.66 करोड़ के नए प्रोजेक्ट
भविष्य की दिशा तय करते हुए बीआरओ ने 1,152.66 करोड़ रुपये की लागत वाले नए प्रोजेक्ट्स की घोषणा की है। इसमें वेस्टर्न सिक्किम हाईवे, राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 310A और राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 310AG का निर्माण शामिल है। ये परियोजनाएं न केवल सड़क संपर्क को और सुदृढ़ बनाएंगी बल्कि सेना की त्वरित तैनाती की क्षमता को भी मजबूत करेंगी। निर्माण में जियोटेक्सटाइल्स, ढलान स्थिरीकरण, हिमस्खलन शमन तकनीक और पर्यावरण अनुकूल निर्माण विधियों का उपयोग किया जाएगा, जिससे सड़कें अधिक टिकाऊ और कम लागत वाली बन सकेंगी।
डीजी बीआरओ का संदेश
इस अवसर पर बीआरओ के महानिदेशक लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल रघु श्रीनिवासन ने प्रोजेक्ट स्वस्तिक की टीम को बधाई देते हुए कहा कि बीआरओ की अटूट निष्ठा और कठिन परिश्रम ने देश को सशक्त और जुड़ा हुआ बनाया है। उन्होंने जवानों और इंजीनियरों से आह्वान किया कि वे इसी समर्पण के साथ देश निर्माण की इस मिशन को आगे बढ़ाते रहें।
