BSF Pays Tribute to 13 Martyrs of 1995 Saser Kangri Expedition in Nubra Valley

In a moving tribute steeped in emotion and pride, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday paid homage to 13 of its gallant men who perished during a daring mountaineering expedition to Mount Saser Kangri in 1995. The solemn remembrance ceremony was held at Puckpochey Panamik village in Nubra Valley, Ladakh, where the memories of sacrifice and valor continue to live on.
The event was led by Moinuddin Siddiqui, Deputy Commandant of Kashmir Frontier, who laid floral wreaths at the memorial site alongside fellow officers. The ceremony marked the exact date—August 27, 1995—when the mountaineers tragically went missing while attempting to scale the formidable 25,171-foot Saser Kangri peak, one of the most challenging summits in the eastern Karakoram range.
A Community Gathering of Remembrance
The homage was attended by Col. Mukesh Pandey, VSM, Base Commander Siachen, Tehsildar Sumur Mr. Tashi, family members of the martyrs, Army and police officials, and over 200 villagers from Panamik and neighboring areas. The presence of women, children, and elderly community members transformed the ceremony into a collective tribute that transcended institutional boundaries, showcasing the deep respect the local people continue to hold for the BSF martyrs.

Their names were read aloud as villagers and officers observed a moment of silence, ensuring that their courage remains etched in collective memory.
Medical Camp & Civic Action Programme
Continuing a tradition that began in the aftermath of the 1995 tragedy, the BSF also organised a medical camp and civic action programme in Panamik. This was both an expression of gratitude to the local villagers who had provided crucial support during the 1995 search and rescue operations, and a reaffirmation of the bond between the force and the people of Nubra.
Items such as water tanks, carpets, utensils, ration kits, medicines, school bags, and sweets were distributed to villagers, reaffirming the BSF’s role not just as a security force but also as a pillar of humanitarian support in remote, high-altitude regions.
The Spirit of Adventure & Sacrifice
A senior BSF officer described the martyrs’ legacy as a source of enduring inspiration:
“The legacy of these brave men continues to inspire us. Their spirit of adventure strengthens our resolve to serve in some of the toughest terrains on the Line of Control.”
For the BSF, mountaineering has long been more than just adventure—it is a vital training ground. The annual homage at Panamik highlights the dual purpose of such expeditions: building skills crucial for high-altitude warfare and snowbound operations, while simultaneously fostering a culture of courage, resilience, and teamwork.
The 1995 Saser Kangri expedition remains one of the most painful chapters in BSF’s mountaineering history, but it is also a symbol of the force’s commitment to exploring the limits of human endurance in service of the nation.
Today, as the tricolour fluttered against the icy winds of Nubra, the legacy of those 13 martyrs was celebrated not as a tale of loss, but as an eternal flame of inspiration for generations of BSF soldiers and the people of Ladakh.

नुब्रा घाटी में बीएसएफ ने किया 1995 सासेर कांगड़ी अभियान के 13 शहीद जवानों को नमन

सीमा सुरक्षा बल (BSF) ने बुधवार को 1995 में सासेर कांगड़ी शिखर पर चढ़ाई के दौरान शहीद हुए अपने 13 वीर जवानों को नमन किया। यह भावनात्मक और गौरवपूर्ण श्रद्धांजलि समारोह नुब्रा घाटी के पुकपुचे पनामिक गांव में आयोजित हुआ, जहां शहादत की गूंज आज भी लोगों के दिलों में जीवित है।
समारोह का नेतृत्व कश्मीर फ्रंटियर के डिप्टी कमांडेंट मोइनुद्दीन सिद्दीकी ने किया, जिन्होंने अपने साथियों संग स्मारक स्थल पर पुष्पांजलि अर्पित की। यह वही दिन था—27 अगस्त 1995—जब बीएसएफ के पर्वतारोही दल ने 25,171 फुट ऊंचे सासेर कांगड़ी शिखर को फतह करने के प्रयास में अपने प्राण न्यौछावर कर दिए थे।
सामुदायिक श्रद्धांजलि
इस अवसर पर सियाचिन बेस कमांडर कर्नल मुकेश पांडे, वीएसएम, तहसीलदार सुमूर श्री ताशी, शहीदों के परिजन, सेना एवं पुलिस के अधिकारी और पनामिक व आसपास के गांवों से आए 200 से अधिक ग्रामीण उपस्थित रहे। महिलाओं और बच्चों की बड़ी संख्या ने इस श्रद्धांजलि को सामूहिक स्मृति का उत्सव बना दिया।

ग्रामीणों और अधिकारियों ने मौन रखकर इन वीरों को श्रद्धांजलि दी।
चिकित्सा शिविर और नागरिक सहायता कार्यक्रम
बीएसएफ ने अपनी परंपरा को निभाते हुए चिकित्सा शिविर और नागरिक सहायता कार्यक्रम का आयोजन भी किया। यह स्थानीय ग्रामीणों के प्रति आभार का प्रतीक था, जिन्होंने 1995 के खोज एवं बचाव अभियान में अहम योगदान दिया था।
गांववालों को पानी की टंकियां, कालीन, बर्तन, राशन किट, दवाइयां, स्कूल बैग और मिठाइयां वितरित की गईं।
शौर्य की अमर गाथा
बीएसएफ के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने कहा:
“इन शूरवीरों की विरासत हमें निरंतर प्रेरित करती है। उनका साहसिक जज्बा हमें एलओसी की कठिनतम परिस्थितियों में भी डटे रहने की शक्ति देता है।”
बीएसएफ के लिए पर्वतारोहण केवल खेल नहीं बल्कि उच्च हिमालयी अभियानों और युद्धक क्षमता का हिस्सा है। नुब्रा घाटी में हर वर्ष होने वाली यह श्रद्धांजलि इस परंपरा और शौर्य की जीवित गवाही है।
सासेर कांगड़ी की यह कहानी केवल एक त्रासदी नहीं, बल्कि त्याग और साहस की अमर गाथा है, जिसे पीढ़ियां याद रखेंगी।
