“Cloth Bag, My Companion”: Veera East Delhi Centre Leads a Grassroots Campaign Against Plastic Waste, Promotes Sustainable Living Through Reuse Initiative
New Delhi: In an inspiring step towards environmental conservation and sustainable living, the Veera East Delhi Centre of Mahaveer International organized the “Cloth Bag, My Companion” campaign at Defence Enclave on 5 July 2026. The initiative aimed to encourage citizens to reduce their dependence on single-use plastic bags and adopt eco-friendly cloth bags for their daily needs.
The campaign highlighted the growing environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution and emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in protecting nature. Volunteers interacted with residents, shoppers, and local shopkeepers, explaining how a simple shift from plastic to reusable cloth bags can significantly reduce waste generation and help create cleaner surroundings.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the project was that every cloth bag distributed during the campaign had been handcrafted from old bedsheets, curtains, and other reusable fabric materials. Instead of allowing these textiles to become waste, they were creatively transformed into durable shopping bags, demonstrating the principles of recycling, reuse, and responsible consumption. This approach not only reduced textile waste but also conveyed the powerful message that environmental protection begins with thoughtful everyday choices.
Throughout the programme, members of Veera East Delhi Centre visited shops and public places, distributing cloth bags while encouraging citizens to permanently replace plastic bags with reusable alternatives. They also explained how widespread adoption of cloth bags can reduce pollution, protect wildlife, minimize landfill waste, and contribute to a healthier environment for future generations.
The campaign witnessed the active participation of Chairperson Veera Neelu Jain, Treasurer Veera Beena Shrimali, Vice-Chairperson Veera Anulekha Shah, along with Veera Anju Bhansali, Veera Preeti Jain, Veera Rajshree Jain, Veera Rakhi Dugad, Veera Vinita Jain, Veera Mukta Dugad, and Veera Hansa Mehta. Their collective efforts helped spread awareness among local residents and strengthened the campaign’s outreach across the neighbourhood.
Residents and shopkeepers appreciated the initiative and expressed their commitment to using cloth bags in their everyday lives. Many participants acknowledged that small behavioural changes at the individual level can collectively produce a significant positive impact on the environment.
With plastic pollution emerging as one of the most pressing environmental challenges worldwide, community-driven awareness campaigns such as “Cloth Bag, My Companion” demonstrate how local organizations can play a meaningful role in promoting sustainable lifestyles. By combining environmental awareness with the innovative reuse of old fabrics, Veera East Delhi Centre presented an effective model of community participation in environmental protection.
The campaign concluded with a renewed appeal for every household to adopt reusable cloth bags, reduce plastic consumption, and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable India.
“कपड़े की थैली, मेरी सहेली” अभियान: वीरा पूर्वी दिल्ली केंद्र ने प्लास्टिक मुक्त समाज और पर्यावरण संरक्षण का दिया सशक्त संदेश
नई दिल्ली। पर्यावरण संरक्षण, प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण पर रोक और सतत जीवनशैली को बढ़ावा देने की दिशा में महावीर इंटरनेशनल के वीरा पूर्वी दिल्ली केंद्र द्वारा 05 जुलाई 2026 को डिफेन्स एन्क्लेव में “कपड़े की थैली, मेरी सहेली” परियोजना का सफल आयोजन किया गया। इस अभियान का उद्देश्य लोगों को एकल-उपयोग (Single Use) प्लास्टिक की थैलियों से होने वाले पर्यावरणीय नुकसान के प्रति जागरूक करना तथा दैनिक जीवन में कपड़े की थैलियों के उपयोग को बढ़ावा देना था।
आज जब प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण पूरी दुनिया के सामने एक गंभीर पर्यावरणीय संकट बन चुका है, ऐसे समय में यह अभियान केवल थैलियों के वितरण तक सीमित नहीं रहा बल्कि लोगों की सोच और व्यवहार में सकारात्मक बदलाव लाने का प्रयास भी बना। अभियान के दौरान स्वयंसेविकाओं ने स्थानीय दुकानदारों, राहगीरों और आम नागरिकों से संवाद स्थापित कर उन्हें समझाया कि यदि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति छोटी-छोटी आदतों में बदलाव लाए, तो पर्यावरण संरक्षण की दिशा में बड़े परिणाम प्राप्त किए जा सकते हैं।
इस परियोजना की सबसे अनूठी विशेषता यह रही कि अभियान में वितरित की गई सभी कपड़े की थैलियाँ पुरानी बेडशीट, पर्दों तथा अन्य उपयोगी कपड़ों से तैयार की गई थीं। इस अभिनव पहल ने यह संदेश दिया कि पुराने वस्त्रों को बेकार समझकर फेंकने के बजाय उनका पुनः उपयोग कर पर्यावरण संरक्षण में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया जा सकता है। इस प्रकार यह अभियान प्लास्टिक मुक्त भारत के साथ-साथ री-यूज़ (Reuse) और सर्कुलर इकोनॉमी की अवधारणा को भी व्यवहारिक रूप में प्रस्तुत करता दिखाई दिया।
अभियान के दौरान स्वयंसेविकाओं ने स्थानीय बाजारों और दुकानों पर जाकर कपड़े की थैलियाँ वितरित कीं तथा नागरिकों से अपील की कि वे खरीदारी के समय हमेशा कपड़े की थैली साथ रखें। उन्होंने बताया कि प्लास्टिक की थैलियाँ न केवल मिट्टी और जल स्रोतों को प्रदूषित करती हैं, बल्कि पशु-पक्षियों और समुद्री जीवों के लिए भी गंभीर खतरा बनती हैं। इसके विपरीत कपड़े की थैलियाँ बार-बार उपयोग की जा सकती हैं, जिससे कचरे की मात्रा कम होती है और प्राकृतिक संसाधनों का संरक्षण भी होता है।
कार्यक्रम में वीरा पूर्वी दिल्ली केंद्र की चेयरपर्सन वीरा नीलू जैन, कोषाध्यक्ष वीरा बीना श्रीमाल, उपाध्यक्ष वीरा अनुलेखा शाह, वीरा अंजू भंसाली, वीरा प्रीति जैन, वीरा राजश्री जैन, वीरा राखी दुगड़, वीरा विनीता जैन, वीरा मुक्ता दुगड़ तथा वीरा हंसा मेहता ने सक्रिय सहभागिता निभाई। सभी ने मिलकर दुकानदारों और स्थानीय नागरिकों को पर्यावरण संरक्षण का संदेश दिया तथा उन्हें प्लास्टिक की बजाय कपड़े की थैलियों को अपनाने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
अभियान के दौरान स्थानीय लोगों ने इस पहल की खुलकर सराहना की। अनेक नागरिकों ने भविष्य में नियमित रूप से कपड़े की थैलियों का उपयोग करने का संकल्प लिया तथा कहा कि यदि समाज का प्रत्येक व्यक्ति ऐसी छोटी-छोटी पर्यावरण हितैषी आदतों को अपनाए, तो प्लास्टिक प्रदूषण जैसी बड़ी समस्या पर काफी हद तक नियंत्रण पाया जा सकता है।
महावीर इंटरनेशनल के वीरा पूर्वी दिल्ली केंद्र की यह पहल सामाजिक जागरूकता, पर्यावरण संरक्षण और संसाधनों के पुनः उपयोग का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण बनकर सामने आई है। यह अभियान इस बात का प्रमाण है कि समाज के संगठित प्रयास, जनभागीदारी और सकारात्मक सोच के माध्यम से पर्यावरण संरक्षण को जनआंदोलन का स्वरूप दिया जा सकता है।
