EXERCISE GARUDA 25 CONCLUDES: INDO–FRENCH AIR FORCES MARK A NEW MILESTONE IN STRATEGIC AIR POWER COOPERATION
One of the Largest International Air Drills of 2025 Ends with High-End Combat Training, Deepened Interoperability, and Renewed Strategic Trust
A Stronger Sky-Bound Partnership
The skies over Mont-de-Marsan, France, witnessed a powerful display of air combat capabilities, tactical brilliance, and international military cooperation as Exercise Garuda 25 — the 8th edition of the prestigious Indo–French bilateral air exercise — concluded on 27 November 2025. Hosted at the elite Air Base 118, the exercise brought together advanced fighter jets, transport aircraft, refuellers, tactical crews, and air warriors from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the French Air and Space Force (FASF).
After over two weeks of rigorous combat simulations, complex multi-aircraft missions, and cross-learning between two of the world’s most seasoned air forces, the IAF contingent returned to India on 02 December 2025.
Historic Scale, Strategic Timing
This year’s Garuda was among the largest international air engagements undertaken by the IAF in 2025. India and France — long-standing partners with deep defence cooperation spanning Rafale jets, submarines, space collaboration, and counter-terrorism — once again demonstrated their shared commitment to strengthening operational synergy between their air forces.
IAF’s Cutting-Edge Air Power Arrives in France
The Indian Air Force deployed a formidable package to France, consisting of:
- Su-30MKI multirole fighter jets – the spearhead of IAF’s air dominance fleet
- IL-78 MKI air-to-air refuellers – extending operational endurance of fighters during long-duration sorties
- C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft – responsible for heavy-lift and logistics support
- A highly skilled maintenance, engineering, and ground crew – ensuring mission availability and aircraft health
This combination enabled the IAF to participate in diverse missions, from beyond-visual-range engagements to defensive counter-air operations, deep strike profiles, and multi-domain mission scenarios designed to simulate real-world contingencies.
Joint Combat Drills in a Realistic War Environment
During Exercise Garuda 25, both air forces engaged in a wide spectrum of air operations, each designed to test a variety of combat skills, quick decision-making under pressure, and the ability to respond to dynamic tactical challenges.
Key Training Activities Included:
1. Joint Mission Planning and Tactical Integration
Indian and French crews conducted pre-mission briefings, tactical planning sessions, and coordinated strategies for offensive and defensive air campaigns.
The emphasis was on building shared understanding of air doctrines, command structures, and engagement philosophies.
2. High-End Strike and Escort Missions
Su-30MKIs flew jointly with French fighters in coordinated deep-strike missions, requiring precise timing, route planning, evasion tactics, and high-speed ingress/egress.

3. Air-to-Air Combat and Advanced Air Manoeuvres
The exercise featured intense engagements that involved beyond-visual-range (BVR) techniques, close combat manoeuvring, electronic countermeasures, and multi-aircraft coordination.
4. Air-to-Air Refuelling Training
The IL-78’s presence enabled extended missions and allowed French pilots to familiarise with IAF refuelling procedures, a critical capability for long-range deployments.
5. Familiarisation with Each Other’s SOPs
Both air forces focused heavily on understanding each other’s standard operating procedures — essential for real-world cooperation during joint humanitarian, peacekeeping, or combat operations.
IAF Maintenance Crew: The Backbone of Mission Success
Behind the scenes, the IAF’s maintenance and technical crews played a pivotal role.
High serviceability levels were maintained for Su-30MKIs and support aircraft throughout the exercise.
This ensured that all scheduled missions were executed without delays, reflecting professionalism, engineering excellence, and the IAF’s readiness for sustained overseas deployments.

The exercise concluded with a ceremonial gathering attended by senior officials from both nations.

इतिहासिक पैमाना और महत्वपूर्ण समय
वर्ष 2025 में भारतीय वायु सेना द्वारा आयोजित या इसमें भाग लिए गए सभी अंतरराष्ट्रीय अभ्यासों में गरुड़ 25 सबसे बड़े और प्रभावशाली अभ्यासों में से एक रहा।
यह अभ्यास ऐसे समय आयोजित हुआ जब दुनिया भर के वायु बल हाई-इंटेंसिटी ऑपरेशन्स, मल्टी-डोमेन वारफेयर और इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी को सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता दे रहे हैं।

4. एयर–टू–एयर रीफ्यूलिंग और विस्तारित मिशन
IL-78 की रीफ्यूलिंग क्षमता से फ्रांसीसी पायलटों को IAF की रीफ्यूलिंग प्रक्रियाओं से परिचित होने में मदद मिली।
5. स्टैंडर्ड ऑपरेटिंग प्रोसीजर्स की गहरी समझ
