Gujarat to Emerge as India’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday declared Gujarat as the upcoming hub for India’s semiconductor manufacturing revolution, emphasizing that the state will play a decisive role in making the country a global leader in advanced electronics, semiconductor design, and chip fabrication.

Speaking at a high-profile event in Gandhinagar, the Prime Minister underlined the government’s “Digital India to Semiconductor India” vision, stressing that the era of electronic dependency is over and India is ready to emerge as a trusted global supply chain partner. He said, “Semiconductors are not just chips; they are the building blocks of the future economy, powering everything from smartphones to defence systems. Gujarat will lead India’s semiconductor revolution.”

Semiconductor Push: The Strategic Vision

India, which currently imports nearly 90% of its semiconductor needs, has taken bold steps in recent years to localize chip production. The Union Cabinet has already cleared multi-billion-dollar investments to establish semiconductor fabrication plants, assembly lines, and design units. Gujarat, with its strong industrial ecosystem, port connectivity, and investor-friendly policies, has emerged as the natural choice for global and domestic firms.

Industry giants, including Vedanta-Foxconn, Micron Technology, and Tata Electronics, have already committed to setting up large-scale facilities in Gujarat, with total investments crossing ₹1.5 lakh crore. Micron’s facility in Sanand has already broken ground and is expected to start packaging and testing by 2026.

Why Gujarat?

Gujarat offers a unique combination of world-class infrastructure, availability of skilled manpower, and supportive policy frameworks such as the Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022-27, which offers subsidies on land, electricity, and capital investment. The state also benefits from its strategic location, with close access to major ports and an expanding logistics network.

PM Modi highlighted that Gujarat has successfully hosted global summits like Vibrant Gujarat, attracting investors from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. He said, “When investors look at India, Gujarat is their first stop. This is not just about industry but about shaping India’s future as a semiconductor superpower.”

National and Global Implications

The global semiconductor industry is valued at over $600 billion annually, and India’s push to join the league of top manufacturing nations is being closely watched by the world. Amid rising concerns over supply chain disruptions due to the US-China tech rivalry and Taiwan Strait tensions, India is positioning itself as a reliable democratic alternative.

For India’s defence sector, indigenous chip manufacturing holds critical importance. From missile guidance systems to secure communications, semiconductors form the heart of modern warfare technology. Analysts suggest that Gujarat’s semiconductor ecosystem could directly benefit India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives in defence and aerospace.

Employment and Skill Development

The Prime Minister also highlighted that semiconductor facilities will generate over one lakh direct and indirect jobs in Gujarat. The state government, in partnership with leading universities and IITs, is setting up skill development programs to train engineers and technicians in chip design, fabrication, and testing.

As India takes its biggest leap into advanced electronics, Gujarat stands at the forefront of this historic transformation. With global companies investing and the government providing strategic push, the state is poised to script a new chapter in India’s industrial and technological rise.

प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने सोमवार को घोषणा की कि गुजरात भारत का सेमीकंडक्टर निर्माण केंद्र बनने जा रहा है। उन्होंने कहा कि आने वाले वर्षों में यह राज्य देश को वैश्विक स्तर पर चिप निर्माण और उन्नत इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स उत्पादन का नेतृत्व दिलाएगा।

गांधीनगर में आयोजित एक महत्वपूर्ण कार्यक्रम में प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने कहा, “सेमीकंडक्टर केवल चिप नहीं हैं, बल्कि यह भविष्य की अर्थव्यवस्था के आधारस्तंभ हैं। ये स्मार्टफोन से लेकर रक्षा तंत्र तक हर चीज़ को शक्ति प्रदान करते हैं। गुजरात भारत के सेमीकंडक्टर क्रांति का नेतृत्व करेगा।”

सेमीकंडक्टर भारत का विज़न

भारत वर्तमान में अपनी लगभग 90% सेमीकंडक्टर जरूरतें आयात करता है। केंद्र सरकार ने पिछले कुछ वर्षों में इस निर्भरता को खत्म करने और स्थानीय उत्पादन को बढ़ावा देने के लिए अरबों डॉलर की योजनाएं शुरू की हैं। गुजरात अपनी औद्योगिक क्षमता, पोर्ट कनेक्टिविटी और निवेशक-हितैषी नीतियों की वजह से इस मिशन का प्रमुख केंद्र बन गया है।

वेदांता-फॉक्सकॉन, माइक्रोन टेक्नोलॉजी और टाटा इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स जैसी कंपनियां पहले ही गुजरात में बड़े निवेश की घोषणा कर चुकी हैं। अनुमान है कि कुल निवेश 1.5 लाख करोड़ रुपये से अधिक होगा। संजय नगर (Sanand) में माइक्रोन का प्लांट निर्माणाधीन है और 2026 तक कार्य शुरू करने की उम्मीद है।

गुजरात क्यों?

गुजरात में विश्व स्तरीय अवसंरचना, प्रशिक्षित मानव संसाधन और ‘गुजरात सेमीकंडक्टर नीति 2022-27’ जैसी योजनाएं हैं, जिनमें भूमि, बिजली और पूंजी निवेश पर सब्सिडी दी जा रही है। साथ ही यहां बंदरगाहों और मजबूत लॉजिस्टिक्स नेटवर्क की सुविधा उपलब्ध है।

प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने कहा कि ‘वाइब्रेंट गुजरात’ जैसे सम्मेलनों ने पहले ही जापान, दक्षिण कोरिया, ताइवान और अमेरिका जैसे देशों के निवेशकों को आकर्षित किया है। उन्होंने कहा, “जब निवेशक भारत की ओर देखते हैं, तो उनकी पहली पसंद गुजरात होती है। यह केवल उद्योग नहीं, बल्कि भारत के भविष्य का निर्माण है।”

राष्ट्रीय और वैश्विक असर

विश्व का सेमीकंडक्टर उद्योग वर्तमान में 600 अरब डॉलर से अधिक का है। अमेरिका-चीन तकनीकी प्रतिस्पर्धा और ताइवान जलडमरूमध्य संकट के बीच भारत एक भरोसेमंद लोकतांत्रिक विकल्प के रूप में उभर रहा है।

भारत के रक्षा क्षेत्र के लिए यह पहल बेहद अहम है। मिसाइल गाइडेंस सिस्टम से लेकर सुरक्षित संचार तक, आधुनिक युद्ध तकनीक सेमीकंडक्टर पर आधारित है। विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि गुजरात का यह इकोसिस्टम आत्मनिर्भर भारत और ‘मेक इन इंडिया’ अभियानों को सीधा लाभ देगा।

रोज़गार और कौशल विकास

प्रधानमंत्री ने यह भी कहा कि सेमीकंडक्टर उद्योग से गुजरात में एक लाख से अधिक प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष रोज़गार पैदा होंगे। राज्य सरकार ने IITs और प्रमुख विश्वविद्यालयों के साथ मिलकर चिप डिजाइन और निर्माण के लिए प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम शुरू किए हैं।

भारत के औद्योगिक और तकनीकी इतिहास में यह कदम एक नया अध्याय लिखने जा रहा है। गुजरात अब केवल उद्योग नहीं, बल्कि भारत की सेमीकंडक्टर शक्ति का केंद्र बनने की ओर तेजी से बढ़ रहा है।
