INDIA–MALDIVES MILITARY PARTNERSHIP ENTERS A NEW PHASE AS 14th EDITION OF EXERCISE EKUVERIN BEGINS IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: FOCUS ON COUNTER-TERRORISM, JUNGLE WARFARE & TECH-ENABLED OPERATIONS

India and Maldives have opened yet another decisive chapter in their longstanding defence partnership as the 14th edition of the annual bilateral military exercise ‘EKUVERIN–2025’ commenced today in Thiruvananthapuram. Scheduled from 02 to 15 December 2025, the exercise brings together contingents of the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for two intensive weeks of joint training, interoperability drills, and exchange of operational best practices across multiple terrains.
The exercise, named ‘Ekuverin’—meaning ‘Friends’ in Dhivehi—symbolises the deep-rooted camaraderie between the two nations. Over the years, EKUVERIN has evolved into a comprehensive military cooperation platform, strengthening India’s role as the primary defence partner of the Maldives and reinforcing shared responsibility for stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
A STRATEGICALLY TIMED EXERCISE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING SECURITY ENVIRONMENT
Exercise EKUVERIN-2025 is taking place at a time when the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is witnessing a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape marked by:

1. Semi-Urban Warfare Operations
Participants will undergo drills covering cordon-and-search operations, hostage rescue tactics, room intervention techniques, high-risk target neutralisation and coordinated movement in built-up areas.
2. Dense Jungle Warfare
The jungles around Thiruvananthapuram offer realistic settings for long-duration patrols, ambush and counter-ambush drills, camouflage techniques, survival training, and small-team tactics typically used in extremist-dominated zones.
3. Coastal and Littoral Operations
Given the Maldives’ unique geography and India’s extensive coastline, the exercise also includes coastal surveillance, anti-infiltration drills, amphibious movement, and interception operations—crucial for preventing maritime terror activities.
Across all stages, the focus is on Counter Insurgency (CI) and Counter Terrorism (CT) operations, with teams rehearsing rapid-response missions, intelligence-driven operations, and collaborative tactical planning.
INTEGRATION OF NICHE TECHNOLOGY: A NEW PILLAR OF EKUVERIN
One of the most significant highlights of EKUVERIN-2025 is the strategic inclusion of cutting-edge niche technologies aimed at enhancing joint operational efficiency. These include:
- AI-enabled surveillance and reconnaissance tools
- Loitering munitions and counter-UAS systems
- High-resolution coastal monitoring sensors
- Unmanned aerial platforms for tactical battlefield awareness

भारत और मालदीव के बीच रणनीतिक रक्षा सहयोग का प्रतीक वार्षिक संयुक्त सैन्य अभ्यास ‘एकुवेरिन–2025’ अपनी 14वीं कड़ी के साथ 02 से 15 दिसंबर 2025 तक केरल के थिरुवनंतपुरम में आयोजित होने जा रहा है। दो सप्ताह तक चलने वाले इस हाई–इंटेंसिटी युद्धाभ्यास का उद्देश्य दोनों देशों की सेनाओं के बीच इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी को और अधिक सुदृढ़ करना, आधुनिक तकनीकी समाधानों को साझा करना तथा उभरते सुरक्षा खतरों—विशेष रूप से आतंकवाद और असममित घुसपैठ—से निपटने की संयुक्त क्षमता को बढ़ाना है।
यह अभ्यास न केवल तकनीकी और सामरिक समन्वय का मंच है, बल्कि भारत और मालदीव के बीच दशकों से चले आ रहे मित्रतापूर्ण, भरोसेमंद और स्थायी रक्षा संबंधों का भी जीवंत उदाहरण है। हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र की सुरक्षा चुनौतियों को देखते हुए इस सैन्य सहयोग की अहमियत निरंतर बढ़ती जा रही है।

● सेमी–अर्बन क्षेत्रों में काउंटर इंसर्जेंसी ऑपरेशंस
● जंगलों में आतंकवादी ठिकानों का पता लगाना और उन्हें निष्क्रिय करना
● तटीय क्षेत्रों में घुसपैठ, अवैध गतिविधियों और समुद्री आतंकवाद से निपटना
● ह्यूमनिटेरियन असिस्टेंस और डिज़ास्टर रेस्पॉन्स (HADR)
● संयुक्त टैक्टिकल ड्रिल्स, एम्बुश–काउंटर एम्बुश, क्लोज क्वार्टर बैटल
● हथियारों और उपकरणों की तकनीकी संगतता का परीक्षण
थिरुवनंतपुरम के भूगोल की विविधता—सघन हरियाली, तटीय क्षेत्र, और शहरी बस्तियाँ—अभ्यास को अत्यंत यथार्थपरक और चुनौतीपूर्ण बनाती हैं।
