India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-5 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile from Odisha
Chandipur, Odisha | August 20, 2025 — India took a major stride in its strategic deterrence capability today with the successful test-firing of the Agni-5 Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur. Conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), the test validated all operational and technical parameters of the nuclear-capable missile, reaffirming India’s self-reliance in advanced missile technology.
The launch, which was closely monitored by tracking radars, electro-optical systems, and telemetry stations along the eastern seaboard, met every objective set for the mission. Defence officials confirmed that the test ensured precision strike capability, robust navigation systems, and foolproof operational readiness of the Agni-5 system.
Agni-5: A Strategic Deterrent
The Agni series of missiles form the backbone of India’s credible minimum deterrence under its No First Use (NFU) nuclear doctrine. While Agni-1, Agni-2, and Agni-3 provide coverage for regional threats, the Agni-5 significantly extends India’s strike capability beyond 5,000 kilometres, effectively covering strategic targets deep within Asia and even beyond.
With a three-stage, solid-fuel propulsion system, Agni-5 is road-mobile and can be launched from specially designed canister systems. This ensures rapid deployment and greater survivability against any potential first-strike attempts.
The missile’s advanced Ring Laser Gyroscope-based Inertial Navigation System (RINS), combined with Micro Navigation System (MINS), enables it to strike with pinpoint accuracy. Analysts note that today’s test has once again demonstrated India’s ability to field a reliable, indigenously developed, long-range missile system.
Significance of the Test
Senior defence sources highlighted that today’s test was not merely a validation exercise but also a demonstration of operational readiness by the Strategic Forces Command. Unlike developmental trials conducted in earlier years, today’s launch was a user trial, reinforcing that the Agni-5 is fully integrated into India’s strategic arsenal.
“This launch proves the robustness of India’s nuclear command and control structure. It reflects the seamless coordination between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Strategic Forces Command, and the Armed Forces,” one senior official said.
Strengthening National Security
The successful test comes at a time of shifting regional and global security dynamics. With tensions in the Indo-Pacific and the increasing militarisation of South Asia, India’s demonstration of credible deterrence capability sends a strong signal of strategic stability and preparedness.
Defence experts note that the operationalisation of Agni-5 enhances India’s second-strike capability, ensuring that the country can retaliate decisively in case of any nuclear aggression.
Background: Evolution of the Agni Program
The Agni program, initiated in the late 1980s under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), has evolved through multiple phases. From Agni-1 with a range of 700 km to the long-range Agni-5, the series has showcased India’s steady march towards self-reliance in advanced missile technology.
Agni-5 was first test-fired in 2012, marking India’s entry into the elite club of nations possessing long-range missile capabilities. Since then, multiple developmental and user trials have been conducted, each refining its accuracy, reliability, and readiness.

ओडिशा से ‘अग्नि-5’ मध्यम दूरी की बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल का सफल परीक्षण
चांदीपुर, ओडिशा | 20 अगस्त 2025 — भारत ने अपनी रणनीतिक शक्ति और परमाणु प्रतिरोध क्षमता को और सशक्त करते हुए आज मध्यम दूरी की बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल ‘अग्नि-5’ का सफल परीक्षण किया। यह परीक्षण ओडिशा के इंटीग्रेटेड टेस्ट रेंज (ITR), चांदीपुर से किया गया और इसमें सभी तकनीकी व परिचालन मानकों को सफलतापूर्वक प्रमाणित किया गया। यह परीक्षण स्ट्रैटेजिक फोर्सेज कमांड (SFC) की देखरेख में संपन्न हुआ।
परीक्षण के दौरान मिसाइल की उड़ान को तटीय राडारों, टेलीमेट्री स्टेशनों और इलेक्ट्रो-ऑप्टिकल प्रणालियों से बारीकी से ट्रैक किया गया। रक्षा मंत्रालय ने पुष्टि की कि मिसाइल की नेविगेशन प्रणाली, प्रहार क्षमता और परिचालन तत्परता पूरी तरह संतोषजनक रही।
अग्नि-5: भारत की रणनीतिक ढाल
भारत की अग्नि श्रृंखला देश की परमाणु प्रतिरोध क्षमता का मूल आधार है। जहां अग्नि-1, अग्नि-2 और अग्नि-3 क्षेत्रीय खतरों का जवाब देने में सक्षम हैं, वहीं अग्नि-5 लगभग 5000 किलोमीटर से अधिक दूरी तक प्रहार करने की क्षमता रखती है। यह भारत को एशिया से परे तक रणनीतिक कवरेज प्रदान करती है।
तीन चरणों वाले ठोस ईंधन इंजन और कैनिस्टर आधारित लॉन्च प्रणाली के कारण अग्नि-5 न केवल मोबाइल है बल्कि अत्यधिक सुरक्षित भी है। इसके रिंग लेजर जायरोस्कोप आधारित इनर्शियल नेविगेशन सिस्टम और माइक्रो नेविगेशन सिस्टम इसे उच्चतम सटीकता से लक्ष्य भेदने में सक्षम बनाते हैं।
परीक्षण का महत्व
रक्षा विशेषज्ञों के अनुसार यह परीक्षण केवल तकनीकी मूल्यांकन नहीं बल्कि स्ट्रैटेजिक फोर्सेज कमांड की परिचालन तत्परता का प्रदर्शन भी था। यह एक यूजर ट्रायल था, जिसने यह सिद्ध कर दिया कि अग्नि-5 अब पूर्ण रूप से भारत की सामरिक क्षमता का हिस्सा है।
एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने कहा, “यह लॉन्च भारत की परमाणु कमांड और नियंत्रण संरचना की मजबूती को दर्शाता है और यह DRDO, SFC और सशस्त्र बलों के बीच सशक्त समन्वय का प्रमाण है।”
राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा को मजबूती
इंडो-पैसिफिक क्षेत्र में बढ़ते तनाव और दक्षिण एशिया में सैन्यीकरण की पृष्ठभूमि में भारत का यह सफल परीक्षण न केवल रणनीतिक स्थिरता का संदेश देता है बल्कि यह भी दर्शाता है कि भारत किसी भी चुनौती का सामना करने के लिए तैयार है।
इससे भारत की सेकंड-स्ट्राइक क्षमता मजबूत होती है, जो किसी भी प्रकार के परमाणु हमले की स्थिति में निर्णायक जवाब देने की गारंटी देती है।
अग्नि कार्यक्रम का विकास
भारत का अग्नि कार्यक्रम 1980 के दशक के अंत में समेकित निर्देशित मिसाइल विकास कार्यक्रम (IGMDP) के तहत शुरू हुआ था। तब से लेकर अब तक इस श्रृंखला ने धीरे-धीरे लंबी दूरी तक मार करने वाली मिसाइलों का सफल विकास किया है।
