A race against time in the desert: How military doctors stepped in when every second was slipping away

In the far-flung desert expanse of western Rajasthan — where the dunes swallow distance and help often struggles to arrive in time — a four-day-old infant in Ghantiyali village was slipping into danger. The baby, battling severe physiological jaundice, had reached a life-threatening stage: blood sugar levels plummeting, body systems beginning to shut down, and not a minute to spare. In such remote terrain, the nearest paediatric care can often be many kilometres away, and even that is no guarantee of survival during a neonatal emergency.
It was at this critical moment that the Indian Army’s Battle Axe Division—the formation deployed across the Jaisalmer sector for border security and humanitarian outreach—stepped forward. Their Combat Healers, military medical teams trained to operate in some of the toughest and most inaccessible environments, recognised the danger instantly.
A Crisis Unfolds in a Remote Border Village
Residents of Ghantiyali first noticed that the newborn was unusually lethargic, refusing feeds, and gradually losing responsiveness — classic but dangerous signs of neonatal hypoglycaemia brought on by severe jaundice. With the infant’s condition worsening rapidly, the family and local villagers reached out to the nearby Army post, hoping for immediate help.
For the Army’s medical officers, this was not just a medical emergency — it was a race against the clock, and a life hanging in fragile balance.
Combat Healers Take Charge
When the Battle Axe medical team reached the infant, they found the child unresponsive and dangerously hypoglycaemic. Years of battlefield medicine and desert deployment had prepared them for emergencies of every kind — but saving a newborn requires precision, calm nerves, and absolute speed.
The team initiated rapid dextrose intervention, stabilising the baby’s glucose levels, and placed the newborn on continuous monitoring. These initial moments are often the difference between life, neurological damage, or death.
Within minutes, the child’s vitals began to respond. Lethargy reduced. The body warmed. Breathing stabilised. The crisis had been pulled back — just in time.

For many in the deep border settlements of Jaisalmer, the Indian Army is more than a security force. It is an everyday backbone — the dependable hand that arrives when the world feels too far away. This rescue once again highlights a simple truth:
not every life is saved in operating theatres or high-tech hospitals — sometimes it is saved in a small room in a remote desert village, by soldiers who serve without being asked.

Today, the infant is recovering steadily thanks to timely medical response. For the family, the Army’s intervention was nothing short of miraculous. For the Battle Axe Division, it was just another day of serving the people they protect.

थार के विशाल रेगिस्तान में बसे उन गांवों में, जहाँ दूरी और समय दोनों इंसान को चुनौती देते हैं, घंटियाली नाम की छोटी-सी सीमा-बस्ती में एक चार दिन का नवजात शिशु मौत के मुहाने पर खड़ा था। बच्चे को गंभीर पीलिया और उससे उत्पन्न नवजात हाइपोग्लाइसीमिया ने बेहद नाजुक स्थिति में पहुंचा दिया था — शरीर ठंडा पड़ने लगा, सुस्ती बढ़ने लगी, दूध पीना बंद हो गया और रक्त में शुगर का स्तर तेजी से गिर रहा था। ऐसी स्थिति में नजदीकी विशेषज्ञ स्वास्थ्य सुविधा तक पहुंचना भी कई बार नामुमकिन लगता है।
इसी गंभीर घड़ी में भारतीय सेना की बैटल ऐक्स डिविजन, जो जैसलमेर सेक्टर में सीमा सुरक्षा और मानवीय सहायता—दोनों मोर्चों पर तैनात है, स्थानीय लोगों की पुकार पर सामने आई। उनके कॉम्बैट हीलर्स, जो कठिन इलाकों और सीमांत क्षेत्रों में तुरंत चिकित्सा सहायता प्रदान करने के लिए प्रशिक्षित हैं, ने स्थिति को तुरंत समझ लिया।
दूरस्थ सीमा गांव में संकट की शुरुआत

जब बैटल ऐक्स डिविजन की चिकित्सा टीम नवजात तक पहुंची, बच्चे की हालत अत्यंत चिंताजनक थी। वह लगभग अचेत था, शुगर लेवल खतरनाक रूप से गिर चुका था और समय बेहद कम बचा था। नवजात को संकट की अवस्था से बाहर निकालना किसी बड़े ऑपरेशन से कम नहीं था — मगर यही वे स्थितियाँ हैं जहाँ सेना के डॉक्टर, ‘कॉम्बैट हीलर्स’, अपनी सबसे बड़ी भूमिका निभाते हैं।

जैसलमेर के सीमांत गांवों के लिए भारतीय सेना सिर्फ देश की सुरक्षा नहीं करती — वह जीवन की रक्षा भी करती है।
चाहे वह चिकित्सा संकट हो, पानी की समस्या, दुर्घटना, बाढ़, या जंगल में घुस आए वन्य जीवों की स्थिति — सेना हमेशा एक भरोसेमंद हाथ बनकर खड़ी रहती है।
यह घटना फिर साबित करती है कि—
हर जीवन बड़े अस्पतालों या आधुनिक ऑपरेशन थिएटरों में नहीं बचाया जाता; कई बार वह एक छोटे कमरे में, रेगिस्तानी गांव में, उन सैनिकों की बदौलत बचता है जो बिना बुलाए भी सेवा के लिए तैयार रहते हैं।
एक जीवन बचा, एक समुदाय ने राहत की सांस ली
आज बच्चे की हालत स्थिर है और वह सुरक्षित है — सेना के समय पर हस्तक्षेप की बदौलत।
परिजनों के लिए यह चमत्कार से कम नहीं था।
और बैटल ऐक्स डिविजन के लिए यह उनकी रोज़ की ड्यूटी का हिस्सा था — देश की सीमाओं की रक्षा के साथ-साथ वहाँ रहने वाले लोगों के जीवन की भी रक्षा।

कॉम्बैट हीलर्स का काम हमेशा सुर्खियाँ नहीं बनता, लेकिन वे भारत-पाक सीमा के सबसे कठिन इलाकों में मानवता के संरक्षक हैं। वे सिर्फ युद्धभूमि के डॉक्टर नहीं — बल्कि उन गांवों के भी चिकित्सक हैं, जहाँ सरकारी सुविधाएँ आज भी दूरी, समय और भूगोल के संघर्ष में उलझी रहती हैं।
घंटियाली में वह चार दिन का शिशु आज ज़िंदा है सिर्फ इसलिए—
क्योंकि सेना के ये खामोश नायक समय पर पहुँचे।
क्योंकि वे तैयार थे।
क्योंकि वे वहीं मौजूद थे जहाँ किसी और के पास पहुँचने में देर हो सकती थी।
