INDIAN NAVAL SHIP TAMAL ARRIVES AT SOUDA BAY, GREECE: STRENGTHENING MARITIME TIES BETWEEN INDIA AND HELLENIC NAVY

In a significant boost to India’s growing naval diplomacy in the Mediterranean, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tamal, the latest stealth frigate to be commissioned, arrived at Souda Bay, Greece, on 19 August 2025. The warship is on her return passage to India following commissioning in Russia and is undertaking a series of international outreach missions to deepen maritime partnerships.

The port call at Souda Bay carries both symbolic and strategic importance, reflecting New Delhi’s emphasis on strengthening defence cooperation with Athens at a time when the Mediterranean is witnessing shifting geopolitical equations. The visit by INS Tamal underscores the Indian Navy’s operational reach, its expanding engagements with European navies, and the political will to forge closer ties with Greece, a country that shares historical bonds and strategic convergence with India.

Professional & Cultural Engagements

During the port call, the ship’s crew will participate in an array of professional and cultural activities. Notable among these are high-level discussions with senior Hellenic Navy functionaries aimed at sharing operational experiences, doctrines, and future cooperation prospects.

The crew will also familiarise themselves with operations and procedures at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC) in Souda Bay. This visit is seen as crucial since the Indian Navy has actively participated in anti-piracy missions, maritime security operations, and humanitarian missions across the globe, and engagement with NATO facilities opens doors for greater interoperability.

A walk-around of NATO and Hellenic Navy facilities has also been planned, culminating in a passage exercise (PASSEX) with Hellenic Navy units upon departure. Such exercises are vital in enhancing seamanship skills, communication protocols, and tactical coordination at sea.

Paying Homage & People-to-People Bonds

Beyond military-to-military interactions, the visit of INS Tamal carries a deeply respectful cultural and historical dimension. The crew will pay homage to fallen citizens of Greece and uniformed personnel, including Indian soldiers who fought under the British Indian Army during World War II. This gesture acknowledges the shared sacrifices of India and Greece in global conflicts and reaffirms the emotional bridges between the two nations.

The sailors will also undertake cultural exchanges, including visits to maritime museums of Crete and interactions with the Indian diaspora in Greece. These engagements aim at deepening people-to-people contacts and showcasing India’s naval traditions and cultural diplomacy.

Growing India-Greece Naval Ties

The visit of INS Tamal builds upon a series of recent naval interactions between the two countries. Only last month, the Hellenic Navy Ship Psara, a MEKO 200 class frigate, visited Mumbai from 11 – 13 July 2025, where both navies exchanged training insights and operational experiences.

India and Greece have increasingly found common ground in the maritime domain. Shared concerns about security of sea lanes, counter-terrorism at sea, and safeguarding global commerce have brought the two democratic nations closer. Training courses, passage exercises, delegation-level visits, and ship port calls are now becoming regular features of Indo-Hellenic defence cooperation.

Strategic Significance

The arrival of INS Tamal in Souda Bay is more than a routine port call; it is a manifestation of India’s Act East – Act West policy, where New Delhi seeks to strengthen maritime partnerships across both the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean. For Greece, which is seeking a larger role in global security, ties with India provide an opportunity to diversify defence cooperation beyond its traditional European partners.

This visit will not only allow both navies to share best practices, but also explore new avenues of cooperation in areas like maritime domain awareness, anti-submarine warfare, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.

The growing synergy between India and Greece, reflected in naval engagements like this, is bound to pave the way for deeper defence and strategic ties, further enhancing India’s footprint in the Mediterranean and beyond.

भारतीय नौसेना का युद्धपोत आईएनएस तमल ग्रीस के सूडा बे पहुँचा, भारत-ग्रीस रक्षा सहयोग को नई मजबूती

भूमध्य सागर में भारत की बढ़ती नौसैनिक कूटनीति को नया आयाम देते हुए भारतीय नौसैनिक युद्धपोत आईएनएस तमल 19 अगस्त 2025 को ग्रीस के सूडा बे पहुँचा। रूस में कमीशनिंग के बाद यह जहाज़ भारत लौटते समय विभिन्न देशों में अपनी उपस्थिति दर्ज करा रहा है और इसी क्रम में ग्रीस का दौरा किया। यह यात्रा केवल एक औपचारिक पोर्ट कॉल नहीं बल्कि भारत-ग्रीस के बीच गहराते सामरिक और सांस्कृतिक संबंधों का प्रतीक है।

पेशेवर व सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम

इस दौरे के दौरान जहाज़ के अधिकारी और नौसैनिक कई पेशेवर और सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों में शामिल होंगे। इनमें प्रमुख है हेलनिक नेवी के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों के साथ बैठकें, जहां समुद्री संचालन, रणनीतिक अनुभव और सहयोग के नए अवसरों पर चर्चा होगी।

इसके अलावा दल नाटो मैरिटाइम इंटरडिक्शन ऑपरेशनल ट्रेनिंग सेंटर (NMIOTC), सूडा बे की प्रक्रियाओं से परिचित होगा। इस यात्रा का विशेष महत्व इसलिए भी है क्योंकि भारतीय नौसेना लंबे समय से समुद्री डकैती-रोधी अभियानों, मानवीय राहत और वैश्विक समुद्री सुरक्षा अभियानों में अग्रणी भूमिका निभाती रही है।

दल नाटो और हेलनिक नेवी की सुविधाओं का भी दौरा करेगा और प्रस्थान के समय पासेज एक्सरसाइज (PASSEX) आयोजित की जाएगी। इससे दोनों नौसेनाओं की आपसी तालमेल क्षमता और समुंदर में युद्धाभ्यास का अनुभव और गहराएगा।

शहीदों को श्रद्धांजलि और सांस्कृतिक जुड़ाव

इस दौरे का एक भावनात्मक और ऐतिहासिक पहलू भी है। आईएनएस तमल का दल ग्रीस के नागरिकों और सैनिकों के साथ-साथ उन भारतीय सैनिकों को भी श्रद्धांजलि देगा जिन्होंने द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध में ब्रिटिश भारतीय सेना के हिस्से के रूप में ग्रीस में लड़ाई लड़ी थी।

सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों में नौसैनिक दल क्रीट के समुद्री संग्रहालयों का दौरा करेगा और ग्रीस में रह रहे भारतीय प्रवासी समुदाय से भी मुलाकात करेगा। इससे दोनों देशों के बीच जन-जन के रिश्ते और गहरे होंगे।

भारत-ग्रीस नौसैनिक रिश्तों की मज़बूती

यह यात्रा भारत और ग्रीस के बीच पहले से मौजूद नौसैनिक सहयोग को और आगे बढ़ाती है। पिछले महीने ही हेलनिक नेवी शिप प्सारा (MEKO 200 क्लास फ्रिगेट) 11-13 जुलाई 2025 को मुंबई पहुँची थी। उस दौरान दोनों नौसेनाओं ने प्रशिक्षण और अभियानों पर विचार-विमर्श किया था।

अब दोनों देशों की नौसेनाएँ नियमित रूप से प्रशिक्षण पाठ्यक्रम, पोर्ट कॉल्स, युद्धाभ्यास और प्रतिनिधिमंडल स्तर की यात्राएँ कर रही हैं।

रणनीतिक महत्व

आईएनएस तमल की सूडा बे यात्रा भारत की ‘Act East – Act West’ नीति का हिस्सा है, जिसके तहत भारत हिंद-प्रशांत और भूमध्य सागर दोनों क्षेत्रों में साझेदारी मजबूत कर रहा है। वहीं, ग्रीस भी वैश्विक सुरक्षा में बड़ी भूमिका निभाने की दिशा में भारत जैसे रणनीतिक साझेदार को महत्व दे रहा है।

यह यात्रा दोनों नौसेनाओं के लिए बेस्ट प्रैक्टिस साझा करने और समुद्री निगरानी, पनडुब्बी रोधी अभियानों और मानवीय आपदा राहत (HADR) सहयोग जैसे नए क्षेत्रों में साझेदारी बढ़ाने का अवसर होगी।

निश्चित ही यह नौसैनिक जुड़ाव भारत और ग्रीस के बीच रक्षा सहयोग को नए शिखर पर ले जाएगा और भूमध्य सागर में भारत की उपस्थिति को और सुदृढ़ करेगा।
