INS Sandhayak Docks at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base on National Day, Strengthening India-Singapore Maritime Ties

Singapore, 09 August 2025 – In a remarkable display of maritime diplomacy, the Indian Naval Ship Sandhayak, India’s first indigenously built Survey Vessel Large (SVL) equipped with cutting-edge hydrographic technology, entered Changi Naval Base in Singapore today for a significant three-day port call. The timing could not have been more symbolic, coinciding with Singapore’s National Day celebrations and underscoring the strong and growing partnership between the two nations in the maritime domain.

Commissioned in February 2024 in the presence of the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, INS Sandhayak represents a new era of indigenous shipbuilding prowess under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. Designed to conduct full-scale coastal and deep-sea hydrographic surveys, the vessel is also capable of Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, disaster relief operations, and humanitarian assistance. With an embarked helicopter and onboard hospital facilities, it is prepared to respond swiftly to regional emergencies, reinforcing India’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific’s safety and stability.

Strengthening Bilateral Hydrographic Cooperation

The visit is part of India’s broader mission to deepen regional maritime cooperation, particularly in hydrography—a crucial field for ensuring safe navigation, supporting trade routes, and enhancing marine scientific knowledge. Over the next three days, INS Sandhayak’s crew will engage in high-level technical and professional exchanges with Singapore’s maritime agencies.

The ship’s Commanding Officer is scheduled to call on Mr Gary Chew, Assistant Chief Hydrographer, Singapore, and Colonel Chauah Meng Soon, Commander of the Royal Singapore Navy’s 9th Flotilla. These engagements are expected to pave the way for collaborative hydrographic surveys, data sharing, and capacity-building programs that will benefit both navies and the wider maritime community in Southeast Asia.

Public Engagements and Showcasing Capabilities

Highlighting the diplomatic outreach component of the visit, personnel from the Royal Singapore Navy will tour INS Sandhayak to witness the advanced hydrographic survey systems onboard, including multi-beam echo sounders, autonomous survey boats, and high-resolution seabed mapping technology.

The High Commission of India in Singapore has also arranged a guided visit for school children and families of the mission’s officials to explore the vessel, interact with the crew, and learn about the Indian Navy’s role in safeguarding maritime interests. Such public diplomacy efforts aim to inspire the next generation about maritime careers and the importance of ocean science in modern geopolitics.

Strategic Context and Regional Importance

India and Singapore share a longstanding maritime partnership rooted in mutual respect, strategic trust, and a shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. Regular joint naval exercises such as SIMBEX, coordinated patrols, and training exchanges have laid a strong foundation for this cooperation. सिंगापुर, 09 अगस्त 2025 – भारत की समुद्री कूटनीति का शानदार उदाहरण पेश करते हुए, भारतीय नौसैनिक पोत आईएनएस संध्याक आज सिंगापुर के चांगी नेवल बेस पर एक महत्वपूर्ण तीन दिवसीय यात्रा के लिए पहुंचा। यह दौरा सिंगापुर के नेशनल डे के मौके पर हो रहा है, जो दोनों देशों के बीच मजबूत होते रिश्तों और समुद्री क्षेत्र में बढ़ते सहयोग का प्रतीक है।

आईएनएस संध्याक को फरवरी 2024 में माननीय रक्षा मंत्री की उपस्थिति में कमीशन किया गया था। ‘मेक इन इंडिया’ और ‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ पहल के तहत निर्मित यह पहला स्वदेशी सर्वे वेसल लार्ज (SVL) है, जिसमें अत्याधुनिक हाइड्रोग्राफिक तकनीक लगी हुई है। यह पोत तटीय और गहरे समुद्री सर्वे करने के साथ-साथ सर्च एंड रेस्क्यू (SAR) मिशन, आपदा राहत और मानवीय सहायता कार्यों में भी सक्षम है। इसमें हेलीकॉप्टर संचालन और ऑनबोर्ड अस्पताल की सुविधाएं भी मौजूद हैं, जिससे यह आपातकालीन स्थितियों में त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया देने में सक्षम है।

हाइड्रोग्राफी में द्विपक्षीय सहयोग को मजबूती

यह दौरा भारत के व्यापक मिशन का हिस्सा है, जिसका उद्देश्य क्षेत्रीय समुद्री सहयोग को गहरा करना है, खासतौर पर हाइड्रोग्राफी के क्षेत्र में। आने वाले तीन दिनों में आईएनएस संध्याक का दल सिंगापुर की समुद्री एजेंसियों के साथ तकनीकी और पेशेवर विचार-विमर्श करेगा।

पोत के कमांडिंग ऑफिसर श्री गैरी च्यू, असिस्टेंट चीफ हाइड्रोग्राफर, सिंगापुर और कर्नल चुआह मेंग सून, कमांडर, रॉयल सिंगापुर नेवी की 9वीं फ्लोटिला से शिष्टाचार भेंट करेंगे। इन मुलाकातों से संयुक्त सर्वेक्षण, डेटा साझाकरण और क्षमता निर्माण कार्यक्रमों के नए रास्ते खुलने की उम्मीद है।

जनसंपर्क और क्षमताओं का प्रदर्शन

रॉयल सिंगापुर नेवी के कर्मी आईएनएस संध्याक का दौरा करेंगे, जहां वे मल्टी-बीम इको साउंडर, स्वायत्त सर्वे बोट और उच्च-रिज़ॉल्यूशन समुद्र तल मानचित्रण जैसी अत्याधुनिक तकनीकों को देख सकेंगे।

इसके अलावा, भारत के उच्चायुक्तालय द्वारा स्कूली बच्चों और अधिकारियों के परिवारों के लिए विशेष भ्रमण का आयोजन किया गया है, जिसमें वे पोत की कार्यप्रणाली को समझेंगे और भारतीय नौसेना के योगदान को नजदीक से जान पाएंगे।

रणनीतिक महत्व
