INSV Tarini Crosses Halfway Mark in Historic Circumnavigation: CNS Interacts with the Crew
New Delhi, 6 February 2025 – The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, interacted with the valiant crew of INSV Tarini, who have successfully covered more than half of their circumnavigation expedition. The interaction came at a crucial juncture as the all-women crew braved some of the most challenging waters of the Southern Ocean, having crossed the formidable 50° South Latitude and entered the Furious Fifties—a zone notorious for its fierce winds and turbulent seas.
The crew, currently sailing in one of the most remote and treacherous waters on the planet, received words of encouragement and appreciation from the CNS, who lauded their resilience, professionalism, and indomitable spirit.
A Journey of Grit and Determination
INSV Tarini set sail from Goa on 02 October 2024, embarking on an ambitious circumnavigation mission that tests not only seamanship and endurance but also human spirit and perseverance. The crew reached Lyttelton, New Zealand, on 4 January 2025, where they undertook a short halt for resupply and maintenance before embarking on the most grueling phase of their journey—sailing through the Southern Ocean towards Cape Horn.
Having sailed over 12,000 nautical miles (nm) since the flag-off, Team Tarini has now entered the legendary Furious Fifties, known for relentless winds and unpredictable sea conditions. The third leg of their journey has been particularly demanding, with the crew successfully navigating through two powerful storms and crossing Point Nemo, the most isolated and remote location on Earth, where the nearest human presence is aboard the International Space Station orbiting above.
CNS Expresses Pride in Team Tarini’s Achievements
During his interaction, Admiral Tripathi conveyed his immense pride in the crew’s achievements and commended their unwavering determination despite the numerous challenges faced at sea.
“Your smiling faces reflect your resilience, determination, and the never-say-die spirit, a source of motivation to all those who are watching you. The Indian Navy and the Nation are proud of you,” he said.
The CNS also took the opportunity to extend warm birthday wishes to Lt Cdr Dilna, who is celebrating her birthday on 07 February, making the occasion even more special amid their extraordinary expedition.
A Testament to India’s Maritime Prowess
The ongoing circumnavigation mission by INSV Tarini is a testament to India’s maritime capabilities and the spirit of women in the Indian Navy. It highlights India’s commitment to gender inclusivity and the promotion of women in leadership roles in challenging domains such as ocean sailing and naval operations.
The Indian Navy, with its history of successful global circumnavigation ventures, continues to inspire future generations by encouraging such daring and historic endeavors. The voyage of INSV Tarini is not only a significant achievement for the Indian Navy but also an inspiration for the nation.
As the crew of INSV Tarini continues their incredible journey, they carry with them the hopes and admiration of a proud nation, eager to welcome them back after completing this extraordinary feat of endurance, skill, and adventure.
