Major Shaitan Singh, Param Veer Chakra, Remembered on 62nd Martyrdom Anniversary in Jodhpur
Jaipur : The city of Jodhpur paid heartfelt tributes to the gallant hero of the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Major Shaitan Singh, Param Veer Chakra (Posthumous), on his 62nd Martyrdom Anniversary. The solemn ceremony, held at Param Veer Circle, Paota, was marked by full military honors, bringing together soldiers, veterans, civilians, and schoolchildren to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of the brave heart.
Homage to a Hero
The event began with a detailed recounting of Major Shaitan Singh’s heroic exploits during the 1962 Indo-China War. The narrative highlighted his inspiring leadership, unparalleled bravery, and ultimate sacrifice at Rezang La, where he commanded a company of the 13 KUMAON battalion.
Floral tributes were offered by senior military officers, retired defense personnel, and civilians, underscoring the gratitude of the nation towards its martyrs. A unique and touching moment was the participation of 40 students from Chaupasini School, where Major Shaitan Singh studied during his early years. Dressed in saffron turbans, they paid homage to the war hero, symbolizing the spirit of patriotism and reverence for his legacy. Adding to the emotional resonance of the occasion was the presence of Major Shaitan Singh’s granddaughter, who joined the gathering to honor her legendary grandfather.
Wreath-Laying and Silent Tribute
A ceremonial guard from the Mechanised Infantry Regiment performed a meticulously conducted wreath-laying ceremony. The soldiers, impeccably dressed in their uniforms, paid a silent tribute to Major Shaitan Singh with inverted rifles, a poignant gesture reflecting respect and solemnity.
The Tale of Bravery at Rezang La
The gathering was reminded of the extraordinary courage displayed by Major Shaitan Singh during the Battle of Rezang La in Ladakh, at an altitude of 17,000 feet. On 18 November 1962, his position came under a ferocious attack by the Chinese Army, which outnumbered his forces significantly. Despite overwhelming odds, Major Shaitan Singh moved tirelessly between platoon posts under intense enemy fire, bolstering the morale of his men.
Even after sustaining grievous injuries, he refused evacuation, urging his troops to fight to the last breath. Inspired by their leader’s indomitable spirit, the soldiers of 13 KUMAON held their ground, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Major Shaitan Singh’s valor and sacrifice not only earned him the nation’s highest military honor, the Param Veer Chakra (Posthumous), but also etched his name in history as an eternal symbol of courage and patriotism.
