Rajasthan Returns to Kartavya Path: A Regal Comeback After a Year’s Absence
After a conspicuous absence last year, Rajasthan is set to reclaim its place of pride on Delhi’s Kartavya Path during the Republic Day Parade, marking a significant cultural and symbolic return. In 2024, the state’s tableau did not make it to the ceremonial boulevard and was instead displayed at the Bharat Parv at the Red Fort. This year, however, Rajasthan’s vibrant heritage will once again roll down Kartavya Path, reaffirming its deep-rooted cultural legacy on the nation’s most prestigious stage. The return is being viewed not merely as an administrative inclusion but as a cultural restoration, bringing Rajasthan’s royal artistry back into the national spotlight.
Bikaner’s Golden Legacy Takes Centre Stage on the National Boulevard
The highlight of Rajasthan’s tableau this year is the world-renowned Usta Kala of Bikaner, a rare and regal art form distinguished by its shimmering golden finish. Usta Kala, traditionally practiced on camel hide, involves intricate gold embossing that transforms utilitarian objects into royal masterpieces. By choosing Usta Kala as the central theme, Rajasthan has foregrounded one of its most refined and historically significant crafts, allowing millions of viewers in India and abroad to witness an art form that embodies both desert resilience and royal sophistication.
Usta Kala: From Persian Roots to Bikaner’s Royal Courts
The origins of Usta Kala are traced back to Persia (modern-day Iran), from where master craftsmen travelled to India during the Mughal era. The art found fertile ground in Bikaner under the patronage of Raja Rai Singh, who invited skilled Ustad artists to his court. Over time, the craft evolved into a distinctive Bikaner tradition. The process involves treating camel hide through a meticulous technique, followed by the application of 24-carat gold leaf and natural pigments in a raised relief style known as munawwati. This ensures not only visual grandeur but also durability, allowing the golden sheen to last for decades.
From Kuppis to Contemporary Surfaces: The Evolution of a Living Art
Traditionally, Usta Kala adorned objects such as kuppis (water flasks), lamp shades, and decorative boxes that were integral to royal households. In modern times, the art has transcended its original forms and is now applied to wood, marble, glass, and even architectural walls. This evolution reflects both adaptability and continuity, enabling Usta Kala to remain relevant while preserving its classical essence. The craft’s cultural value has been formally recognised through the award of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Bikaner’s Usta Kala.
Ravanhatta as the Cultural Axis of the Tableau
At the heart of the tableau lies the Ravanhatta, one of the oldest string instruments of Rajasthan, symbolising the state’s deep musical traditions. This year’s tableau uniquely integrates Usta Kala with the Ravanhatta, visually and thematically uniting visual art with folk music. The instrument is presented not merely as a prop but as a living emblem of Rajasthan’s oral and musical heritage, reinforcing the idea that art, craft, and music are inseparable in the state’s cultural identity.
A Rotating Folk Musician Sculpture: Tradition in Motion
The front section of the tableau, mounted on the tractor unit, features a striking sculpture of a folk musician playing the Ravanhatta. Designed to rotate up to 180 degrees, the sculpture introduces movement and dynamism, symbolising the living and evolving nature of folk traditions. Standing approximately 13 feet tall, the structure is flanked by side panels showcasing Usta Kala–decorated frames depicting traditional surahis and lamps, creating a seamless visual narrative of Rajasthan’s artisanal excellence.
The Trailer Section: Craftsmanship, Camel Iconography, and Desert Grandeur
The rear section of the tableau expands the story further. At the forefront, a rotating kuppi embellished with Usta Kala draws attention to the craft’s finesse. Behind it, artisans are depicted in the act of creation, underscoring the human skill and labour that sustain this heritage. The tableau culminates in a majestic camel sculpture, richly ornamented and accompanied by a rider, evoking Rajasthan’s desert ethos. Camel leather craft pieces are displayed within Usta Kala arches on both sides, reinforcing the camel’s central role in the state’s ecology, economy, and culture.
Gair Dance and Living Traditions Alongside the Tableau
Enhancing the visual spectacle, folk artists performing the Gair dance will accompany the tableau on Kartavya Path. Their rhythmic movements and traditional attire add a performative layer, transforming the tableau from a static display into a moving celebration of Rajasthan’s living traditions. The integration of dance, music, sculpture, and craft reflects a holistic portrayal of the state’s cultural ecosystem.
Kartavya Path, Bharat Parv, and the Broader Cultural Framework
Every year, the Republic Day Parade features 31 tableaux from states and central ministries, while Bharat Parv, held from 26 to 31 January, displays a broader collection of 43 tableaux at the Red Fort. In 2024, Rajasthan’s tableau was limited to Bharat Parv, a decision that sparked considerable discussion within cultural circles. In 2025, 12 states, including Rajasthan, were showcased at Bharat Parv, with Kartavya Path tableaux joining the festival on the evening of 26 January. This year’s return to Kartavya Path signals renewed recognition of Rajasthan’s cultural narrative at the highest ceremonial level.
Official Confirmation and Cultural Significance
Confirming the inclusion, Dr. Rajneesh Harsh, Nodal Officer of the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi, stated that Rajasthan’s tableau has been granted space on Kartavya Path this year, with a special focus on Bikaner’s Usta Kala. The statement underscores the state’s intent to use the national platform to highlight its unique artistic heritage and to ensure that traditional crafts receive contemporary visibility and appreciation.
A Golden Statement of Identity on Republic Day
Rajasthan’s tableau at the Republic Day Parade 2025 is more than a visual attraction—it is a statement of cultural identity, historical continuity, and artistic pride. एक वर्ष बाद कर्तव्य पथ पर राजस्थान की शाही वापसी
गणतंत्र दिवस परेड में एक साल के अंतराल के बाद राजस्थान की झांकी की कर्तव्य पथ पर वापसी न केवल सांस्कृतिक दृष्टि से महत्वपूर्ण है, बल्कि यह राज्य की विरासत की पुनर्स्थापना का भी प्रतीक है। पिछले वर्ष राजस्थान को कर्तव्य पथ पर स्थान नहीं मिल पाया था और उसकी झांकी को लाल किले पर आयोजित भारत पर्व में प्रदर्शित किया गया था। इस बार राजस्थान फिर से देश के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित मंच पर अपनी सांस्कृतिक पहचान के साथ लौट रहा है, जिसे राज्य के लिए सम्मान और गर्व के क्षण के रूप में देखा जा रहा है।
बीकानेर की सुनहरी उस्ता कला बनी झांकी का मुख्य आकर्षण
इस वर्ष राजस्थान की झांकी का केंद्र बिंदु बीकानेर की विश्व प्रसिद्ध उस्ता कला है, जो अपनी स्वर्णिम आभा और बारीक नक्काशी के लिए जानी जाती है। ऊंट के चमड़े पर की जाने वाली यह कला राजस्थान की शाही परंपरा और मरुस्थलीय जीवनशैली दोनों को प्रतिबिंबित करती है। उस्ता कला को झांकी के केंद्र में रखकर राजस्थान ने अपनी सबसे विशिष्ट और दुर्लभ शिल्प परंपराओं में से एक को राष्ट्रीय मंच पर प्रस्तुत किया है।
ईरान से बीकानेर तक: उस्ता कला की ऐतिहासिक यात्रा
उस्ता कला की जड़ें ईरान में मानी जाती हैं, जहाँ से यह कला मुगल काल में भारत आई। बीकानेर में राजा राय सिंह के शासनकाल के दौरान उस्ताद कलाकारों द्वारा इस कला को दरबारी संरक्षण मिला और यहीं से यह एक विशिष्ट राजस्थानी शिल्प के रूप में विकसित हुई। इस कला में ऊंट के चमड़े को विशेष प्रक्रिया से तैयार कर उस पर 24 कैरेट सोने की पत्ती और प्राकृतिक रंगों से ‘मुनव्वती’ यानी उभरी हुई स्वर्ण नक्काशी की जाती है, जिससे इसकी चमक वर्षों तक बनी रहती है।
पारंपरिक कूपी से आधुनिक सतहों तक उस्ता कला का विस्तार
परंपरागत रूप से उस्ता कला का प्रयोग कूपी, लैंपशेड और सजावटी बक्सों पर किया जाता था, जो शाही जीवनशैली का हिस्सा थे। समय के साथ यह कला विकसित हुई और अब लकड़ी, संगमरमर, कांच और दीवारों पर भी अपनाई जा रही है। इसी निरंतरता और विशिष्टता के कारण बीकानेर की उस्ता कला को भौगोलिक संकेत यानी GI टैग भी प्रदान किया गया है, जो इसकी वैश्विक पहचान को और सुदृढ़ करता है।
रावणहत्था: झांकी का सांस्कृतिक केंद्र
इस वर्ष की झांकी में रावणहत्था वाद्य यंत्र को केंद्रीय प्रतीक के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया गया है। राजस्थान का यह प्राचीन लोक वाद्य न केवल संगीत परंपरा का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है, बल्कि लोककथाओं और जनस्मृतियों से भी गहराई से जुड़ा है। उस्ता कला और रावणहत्था का यह संगम दृश्य और श्रव्य परंपराओं को एक साथ जोड़ता है।
180 डिग्री घूमता लोक कलाकार का मूर्तिशिल्प
झांकी के अग्रभाग में रावणहत्था बजाते लोक कलाकार का भव्य मूर्तिशिल्प लगाया गया है, जो 180 डिग्री तक घूमता हुआ नजर आएगा। लगभग 13 फीट ऊंचा यह संरचना राजस्थान की जीवंत लोक परंपराओं का प्रतीक है। ट्रैक्टर के दोनों ओर उस्ता कला से सजे फ्रेमों में सुराही और लैंप के रूपांकन झांकी को शाही भव्यता प्रदान करते हैं।
पृष्ठभाग में कारीगर, कूपी और शाही ऊंट की भव्य प्रस्तुति
झांकी के ट्रेलर भाग में आगे की ओर घूमती हुई उस्ता कला से सुसज्जित कूपी दिखाई गई है। इसके पीछे पारंपरिक हस्तशिल्प कारीगरों को काम करते हुए दर्शाया गया है, जो इस कला के मानवीय पक्ष को उजागर करता है। अंत में विशेष अलंकरणों से सजी विशाल ऊंट की प्रतिमा सवार के साथ दिखाई देती है, जो राजस्थान की मरुस्थलीय संस्कृति और जीवनशैली का प्रतीक है। दोनों ओर उस्ता कला के मेहराबों में चर्मकला के उत्कृष्ट नमूने प्रदर्शित किए गए हैं।
गेर लोकनृत्य से सजीव होगी झांकी की प्रस्तुति
झांकी के आगे और दोनों ओर गेर लोकनृत्य प्रस्तुत करते कलाकार शामिल होंगे, जिनकी पारंपरिक वेशभूषा और तालबद्ध नृत्य झांकी को जीवंत बना देंगे। संगीत, नृत्य, शिल्प और मूर्तिकला का यह संगम राजस्थान की सांस्कृतिक समृद्धि को संपूर्णता में प्रस्तुत करता है।
कर्तव्य पथ और भारत पर्व का सांस्कृतिक संदर्भ
हर वर्ष गणतंत्र दिवस परेड में राज्यों और केंद्रीय मंत्रालयों की कुल 31 झांकियां शामिल होती हैं, जबकि भारत पर्व में 43 झांकियां प्रदर्शित की जाती हैं। भारत पर्व का आयोजन 26 से 31 जनवरी तक लाल किले पर होता है। पिछले वर्ष राजस्थान को कर्तव्य पथ पर स्थान न मिलने के कारण उसकी झांकी भारत पर्व तक सीमित रही थी। इस बार कर्तव्य पथ पर वापसी को सांस्कृतिक मान्यता के रूप में देखा जा रहा है।
आधिकारिक पुष्टि और सांस्कृतिक संदेश
राजस्थान ललित कला अकादमी के नोडल अधिकारी डॉ. रजनीश हर्ष ने पुष्टि की है कि इस वर्ष राजस्थान की झांकी को कर्तव्य पथ पर स्थान मिला है और इसमें बीकानेर की उस्ता कला को विशेष रूप से प्रस्तुत किया गया है। यह निर्णय राजस्थान की पारंपरिक कलाओं को राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर पहचान दिलाने की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम माना जा रहा है।
गणतंत्र दिवस पर सुनहरी विरासत का गौरवपूर्ण प्रदर्शन
गणतंत्र दिवस 2025 पर राजस्थान की झांकी केवल एक दृश्य प्रस्तुति नहीं, बल्कि इतिहास, परंपरा और सांस्कृतिक गौरव की चलती-फिरती कहानी है। उस्ता कला, रावणहत्था, लोकनृत्य और ऊंट के प्रतीक के माध्यम से राजस्थान अपनी सुनहरी विरासत को कर्तव्य पथ पर गर्व के साथ प्रस्तुत करेगा, जो देश और दुनिया के दर्शकों के लिए यादगार बन जाएगी।
