Established in 1996, the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team has evolved into one of the most elite aerobatic formations in the world. It holds the rare distinction of being the only nine-aircraft aerobatic team in Asia and among a select few globally capable of maintaining such complex and tightly-knit formations. Over the years, the team has performed more than 800 aerial displays across India, captivating millions and inspiring generations. Beyond national borders, Suryakiran has represented the professionalism, precision and confidence of the Indian Air Force at international air shows in countries including China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, earning admiration and respect on the global stage.

What sets the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team apart is its extraordinary ability to fly nine aircraft in extremely close proximity—often less than five metres apart—at high speeds. Each manoeuvre is a calculated blend of physics, reflexes and absolute trust among pilots. Graceful loops, thrilling barrel rolls, inverted flying and the much-loved ‘DNA’ manoeuvre demand split-second coordination and unwavering concentration. Any minor deviation can have serious consequences, making every display a demonstration of not just skill, but also courage and mutual reliance forged through years of rigorous training.
Leadership and Pilots: Experience at the Helm of Precision
The team is led by Group Captain , an experienced Su-30 MKI fighter pilot whose leadership anchors the team’s complex aerial choreography. Assisting him is Deputy Leader Wing Commander Tejeshwar Singh. The flying team includes seasoned pilots from diverse fighter and trainer backgrounds, each bringing operational experience and sharp flying instincts to the formation. Supporting them is a highly skilled technical crew responsible for aircraft serviceability, safety checks and flawless execution on ground and in air, ensuring that every sortie meets the highest standards of operational excellence.

Developed entirely within India at the Indian Air Force’s Base Repair Depot in Nashik, this modification enables the team to paint the sky in saffron, white and green during performances, transforming aerobatics into a moving symbol of the national flag.
