Threads of Love, Armour of Duty: Rakshabandhan Celebrated with the Indian Army Chief as the Nation’s Sisters Reaffirm the Bond of Protection

On a warm August morning in the heart of the nation’s capital, a moment unfolded that was as ceremonial as it was heartfelt. Inside the headquarters of the Indian Army, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) received dozens of young visitors — children from ASHA Schools and school girls from the National Capital Region (NCR). But they had not come empty-handed; they came bearing the festival’s most sacred token — the rakhi.
For centuries, Rakshabandhan has symbolised a sister’s trust and a brother’s vow to protect. This year, that ancient pledge was woven into the very fabric of the Indian Army’s mission. Each thread tied on the Army Chief’s wrist was not just a colourful string — it was a declaration from the nation’s daughters: “We believe in you. We are safe because of you.”
The Sword Arm and the Sacred Thread
In the military’s lexicon, the Army Chief’s arm — and by extension, every soldier’s arm — is the “sword arm of the nation.” This arm has delivered strategic blows in the defence of the motherland, most recently during the high-intensity Operation Sindoor, when precision, coordination, and courage defined the Indian Army’s actions.
On this Rakshabandhan, that same arm bore a different kind of power. The soft embrace of threads and beads, crafted by little hands, symbolised the union of strength and compassion — a reminder that the might of the military is ultimately in service of love, peace, and protection.
A Festival That Travels Across Borders Within
This year’s celebration wasn’t confined to the polished floors of Delhi’s ceremonial halls. In every state, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, sisters and schoolchildren prepared rakhis for the soldiers. Through intricate postal routes, military logistics channels, and the Army Postal Service Corps, these rakhis travelled thousands of kilometres.
They reached the snow-covered sentry posts of Ladakh, where temperatures dip far below freezing; the dense, humid jungles of Arunachal and Manipur, where soldiers wade through monsoon rains; the wind-lashed salt plains of the Rann of Kutchh; and the sun-scorched observation towers of the Thar Desert.
In each of these outposts, a soldier’s wrist grew warmer — not from the climate, but from the reminder that somewhere, far away, a sister thought of him, prayed for him, and trusted him with her safety.
Echoes of History in the Present
Rakshabandhan has deep cultural and historical resonance. Legends tell of queens sending rakhis to distant kings, seeking protection in turbulent times. In 2025, the tradition lives on, but the protectors are not monarchs — they are the men and women in olive green, in camouflage, and in the deserts, mountains, and forests of India.

In a forward post in Sikkim, a Gurkha soldier wrote back to a student from Mumbai:
“We fight in cold winds and thin air, but this rakhi warms our hearts. You are far, but we feel you close.”

अगस्त की एक शांत और उजली सुबह, देश की राजधानी के मध्य में, भारतीय सेना मुख्यालय के प्रांगण में एक ऐसा दृश्य साकार हुआ जो जितना औपचारिक था, उतना ही भावनाओं से भरा हुआ। भारतीय थल सेना प्रमुख (COAS) ने आशा स्कूलों के बच्चों और राष्ट्रीय राजधानी क्षेत्र (NCR) की स्कूली छात्राओं का स्वागत किया। उनके हाथों में सिर्फ रंग-बिरंगी राखियां नहीं थीं — वे अपने साथ स्नेह, विश्वास और आशीर्वाद का संदेश लेकर आई थीं।

लेकिन इस रक्षा बंधन पर उसी भुजा ने एक अलग शक्ति धारण की — छोटी-छोटी हथेलियों से बांधे गए रेशमी और मोतियों के धागे। यह ताकत और ममता का संगम था, यह याद दिलाने वाला कि सेना की कठोरता के पीछे राष्ट्रप्रेम और मानवीय भावनाएँ धड़कती हैं।
एक त्योहार जो सीमा से भी आगे जाता है
इस साल का उत्सव सिर्फ दिल्ली की चकाचौंध तक सीमित नहीं रहा। देश के हर कोने से, कश्मीर से कन्याकुमारी और गुजरात से अरुणाचल तक, बहनों और स्कूली बच्चों ने अपने हाथों से राखियां तैयार कीं। ये राखियां आर्मी पोस्टल सर्विस कॉर्प्स और सैन्य रसद तंत्र के माध्यम से हजारों किलोमीटर की यात्रा करती हुई पहुँचीं —
- लद्दाख की बर्फीली चौकियों तक, जहाँ तापमान हड्डियाँ जमा देता है।
- पूर्वोत्तर के घने, बरसाती जंगलों तक, जहाँ सैनिक घुटनों तक पानी में गश्त करते हैं।
- कच्छ के रण के नमकीन मैदानों तक, जहाँ हवा में नमक और धूल तैरती है।
- थार मरुस्थल के तपते प्रहरी टावरों तक, जहाँ दिन का सूरज देह जला देता है।
इन दुर्गम इलाकों में यह राखी सैनिक के मन को गर्माहट देती है, जैसे कोई अदृश्य कवच हो जो मनोबल को मज़बूत करता है।
इतिहास की गूंज, वर्तमान की धड़कन
रक्षा बंधन का सांस्कृतिक और ऐतिहासिक महत्व गहरा है। इतिहास में रानियाँ दूर-दूर के राजाओं को राखी भेजकर कठिन समय में रक्षा का वचन मांगती थीं। आज, 2025 में, इन रक्षकों का रूप बदल गया है — अब वे सिंहासन पर बैठे राजा नहीं, बल्कि वर्दी में सजे सैनिक हैं, जो पहाड़, जंगल, रेगिस्तान और समुद्र की सीमाओं पर डटे हैं।

सीमा से आए संदेश
जम्मू-कश्मीर की एलओसी से एक युवा राइफलमैन ने राजस्थान की एक अज्ञात स्कूली बच्ची से मिली राखी के बाद अपने परिवार को संदेश भेजा —
“मुझे उसका नाम नहीं पता, लेकिन उसने अपना विश्वास मेरी कलाई पर बांधा है। यह मुझे किसी भी हथियार से ज्यादा ताकत देता है। उसे कहिए, उसका भाई सीमा पर खड़ा है।”
सिक्किम की अग्रिम चौकी से एक गोरखा जवान ने मुंबई की एक छात्रा को लिखा —
“हम ठंडी हवाओं और पतली हवा में लड़ते हैं, लेकिन यह राखी दिल को गरमाहट देती है। तुम दूर हो, पर हमें पास महसूस होती हो।”
ऑपरेशन सिंदूर और भावनात्मक भार
हाल ही में सम्पन्न ऑपरेशन सिंदूर भारतीय सेना के लिए एक कठोर परीक्षा थी — जिसमें जैसलमेर से कच्छ तक फैले मरुस्थलीय मोर्चों पर सटीक कार्रवाई और अनुशासन की आवश्यकता थी। इस अभियान में शामिल कई अधिकारियों और जवानों के लिए इस रक्षा बंधन की राखियां सिर्फ त्योहार की वस्तु नहीं, बल्कि अनकहा पदक थीं — जनता की ओर से एक मौन धन्यवाद।
सेना प्रमुख ने अपने संबोधन में कहा —
“हमारी कलाई पर बंधे धागे हमारे सीने के पदकों जितने ही महत्वपूर्ण हैं। ये हमें याद दिलाते हैं कि हम किसकी सेवा कर रहे हैं, क्यों सहते हैं, और क्या हमेशा बचाना है।”
राजधानी से अंतिम चौकी तक
समारोह खत्म होते ही सेना ने सुनिश्चित किया कि हर सक्रिय ड्यूटी पर तैनात सैनिक तक यह खुशी पहुँचे। सेना के काफिले, जो गोला-बारूद और राशन लेकर आगे बढ़ते हैं, इस बार राखियों के पैकेट भी साथ ले गए।
एलएसी के पास के बेस में, जहाँ सर्दी की तैयारी चल रही है, वहाँ राखियां ऊनी कपड़ों के साथ पहुँचीं। मरुस्थल के चौकियों में यह पानी के कनस्तरों के साथ पहुँची।
बाड़मेर के एक छोटे यूनिट कैंटीन में सैनिकों ने शाम की परेड से पहले राखियों को पंक्ति में सजाया। एक जवान ने मुस्कुराकर कहा —
“ये हमारे असली सजावट हैं। ये बताते हैं कि देश हमें भूला नहीं है।”
एक रिश्ता जो दूरी नहीं मानता
रक्षा बंधन का महत्व सेना में इसलिए गहरा है क्योंकि यह दूरी और सीमाओं से परे है। हर सैनिक किसी का भाई है, किसी का रक्षक है — चाहे खून का रिश्ता हो या नहीं। और देश की बहनें भी सिर्फ अपने परिवार तक सीमित नहीं, बल्कि राष्ट्र के हर रक्षक के साथ जुड़ी हैं।
अंतिम सलाम
समारोह के अंत में, सेना प्रमुख खड़े थे — उनकी कलाई रंग-बिरंगे धागों से ढकी हुई थी। ये छोटे हाथों से बांधे गए थे, लेकिन इन पर पूरे देश के विश्वास का भार था। उस क्षण में वर्दी सिर्फ अनुशासन और शक्ति का प्रतीक नहीं, बल्कि प्रेम और भाईचारे की निशानी बन गई।
