Delhi : On the eve of the supreme court ruling in Jan 2021 that stated that homemaker work is at par with hubby’s in office, Vision Search conducted a webinar to take the discussion forward. Some eminent lawyers and activist discussed various aspects under the topic ‘Law for Home- Maker’s Remuneration’.
The eminent panel which was part of the discussion was Archana Mittal – Associate Partner Encito Advisors, Sumitra Choudhary- Advocate Supreme Court of India , Rajni Julka – Educationist, Pedagogist, Speaker , Adv Rakesh Singh – Air Veteran & practicing Advocate , Keerthi Bollineni- President- Vasavya Mahila Mandal, Chandana Bardoloi- legal consultant and Suthirtga Sahariah- Director NVH Global. The webinar was co-hosted by Vasudha Arora, an art therapist and a happiness life coach.
Mona Mehra, Founder of Vision Search stated the complete disregard and disrespect faced by homemakers. The misconception and conditioning people have in their minds about homemakers being a particular gender and the image perpetuated by media of a sad, slogging housewife. Home is the center of living for each one of us and we all make a home. It is each one of us who play a role in our home of a student, mother, father, brother, husband, wife etc. which makes a home and makes each one of us home-makers.
This topic has been a contentious topic as homemaker remuneration has been the most debated topic the world over. The discussion went around the fact that despite the ruling that ‘Homemaker work is at par with hubby’s in office’ there is no acceptance of the same. Many opinions were shared as to what might be the reason.
Justice A K Ganguly in 2010 had frowned upon the clubbing of ‘Housewives’ with prostitutes, beggars and prisoners under the economically non-productive’ category in the Census done by Government of India, saying this betrayed the “totally insensitive” and “callous” approach of statutory authorities. The same was amended and in the next census was put in the non-productive category with the students and elderly. The panel was completely in agreement as to the unjust treatment given to the homemakers and at the callous attitude of the statutory authorities. The panel felt that the homemakers should be given remuneration as well as respect as money gives power to do many things.
Another aspect highlighted was that since we accept only paid work as work, it is leading to rapid commercialization. Unpaid work is done in a home by ourselves and since it is free nobody accepts that as work. Due to this the society is facing so much problem and accepting unpaid work as work would solve this problem.
The inputs given by each panelist was enriching and enlightening and hope to see a change in the society by changing the perspective of people.
