Launch of ‘Ajay’ Marks Historic Milestone in Indian Navy’s ASW Capabilities
Final Ship of ASW Shallow Water Craft (SWC) Project Touches Water, Strengthens Aatmanirbhar Push

In a significant stride towards strengthening India’s maritime capabilities and self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Indian Navy marked a landmark event with the launch of ‘Yard 3034 – Ajay’, the eighth and final ship in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) project being constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. The ceremonial launch took place on 21 July 2025 in the presence of Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, Chief of Materiel (COM), Indian Navy.
Upholding naval tradition, Mrs Priya Deshmukh performed the auspicious launching ceremony by initiating the ship’s descent into the waters, symbolizing the birth of a new sentinel of India’s seas. Senior dignitaries from the Indian Navy and GRSE, along with shipbuilders, engineers, and defence industry officials were present to witness this proud moment of national significance.
Final Ship of a Strategic Class: From ‘Arnala’ to ‘Ajay’
The ASW SWC project was envisaged to enhance India’s littoral warfare and shallow water anti-submarine operations. The first ship of the series, INS Arnala, was commissioned just a month earlier on 18 June 2025, marking the beginning of a new era in shallow water ASW operations. The delivery of the second vessel is planned in August 2025, continuing the Navy’s seamless induction of this new class.
Ajay, as the final ship of this class, carries forward the legacy with state-of-the-art capabilities tailored to detect and neutralize underwater threats near India’s coastlines. The vessel has been indigenously designed and built by GRSE, showcasing India’s evolved shipbuilding expertise under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
Armed to Defend: Powerful Sensors and Firepower
Ajay comes equipped with cutting-edge anti-submarine sensors, including:
- Hull Mounted Sonar
- Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar (LFVDS)
These sensors significantly boost the ship’s underwater domain awareness, enabling effective tracking and engagement of enemy submarines even in shallow and constrained environments.
In terms of weaponry, Ajay boasts a potent combination of:
- Torpedoes
- Anti-Submarine Rockets
- NSG-30 Naval Gun
- 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Controlled Gun (SRCG)
The platform is powered by diesel engines and propelled using waterjets, ensuring high maneuverability and agility in narrow and shallow littoral zones.
Strategic Significance and Self-Reliance
The launch of Ajay marks the culmination of a visionary defence program aimed at bolstering India’s preparedness against undersea threats. With over 80% indigenous content, the ship is a reflection of India’s self-reliance in defence technologies — encompassing ship design, combat systems, sensors, electronic warfare systems, and propulsion.
Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating:
“Ajay is not just a warship — it is a testament to India’s rising strength in naval self-sufficiency. GRSE and the Indian Navy have together shown the world what Atmanirbhar Bharat truly means in practice.”
Ajay: Guardian of the Indian Ocean Region
The vessel’s deployment will significantly augment the Indian Navy’s strategic footprint in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), helping to deter and counter undersea threats posed by hostile submarines and unmanned underwater vehicles. Ajay also provides India with greater flexibility in conducting mine laying operations, maritime surveillance, and coastal defence patrols.
As threats evolve in the IOR — especially from adversarial submarine activity — platforms like Ajay will be central to maintaining maritime dominance, particularly in shallow littoral zones where traditional ASW vessels may face limitations.
GRSE’s Growing Naval Legacy
GRSE has emerged as a key pillar of India’s naval shipbuilding ecosystem, delivering high-performance warships on schedule and with rising indigenous components. The successful completion of the ASW SWC series further cements GRSE’s reputation as one of India’s premier shipyards.
Speaking at the launch event, GRSE officials emphasized the long-term benefits of the program — not just in terms of capability, but also technology transfer, employment generation, and industrial development.

भारत की समुद्री सुरक्षा को मजबूती देने और स्वदेशी रक्षा निर्माण को बढ़ावा देने की दिशा में एक ऐतिहासिक कदम के तहत, भारतीय नौसेना ने एंटी-सबमरीन वारफेयर शैलो वाटर क्राफ्ट (ASW SWC) परियोजना के आठवें और अंतिम जहाज ‘यार्ड 3034 – अजय’ का आज सफल जलावतरण किया।
गार्डन रीच शिपबिल्डर्स एंड इंजीनियर्स (GRSE) द्वारा निर्मित इस जहाज का शुभारंभ चीफ ऑफ मैटेरियल (COM) वाइस एडमिरल किरण देशमुख की उपस्थिति में हुआ। नौसेना की परंपरा के अनुसार, श्रीमती प्रिया देशमुख ने जलावतरण की रस्म पूरी की। कार्यक्रम में भारतीय नौसेना और जीआरएसई के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी, अभियंता व रक्षा क्षेत्र के विशेषज्ञ उपस्थित रहे।
‘अर्नाला’ से ‘अजय’ तक: एक नई श्रृंखला की पूर्णता
ASW SWC परियोजना को विशेष रूप से भारत के तटीय क्षेत्रों में पनडुब्बी रोधी युद्ध क्षमताओं को बढ़ाने के लिए तैयार किया गया है। इस श्रृंखला का पहला जहाज INS अर्नाला को हाल ही में 18 जून 2025 को नौसेना में शामिल किया गया था। वहीं दूसरे जहाज की डिलीवरी अगस्त 2025 में प्रस्तावित है।
‘अजय’ न केवल इस श्रृंखला का अंतिम जहाज है, बल्कि यह एक अत्याधुनिक, पूरी तरह स्वदेशी तकनीकों से लैस सुरक्षा प्रहरी के रूप में सामने आया है। यह भारतीय समुद्री सीमाओं की निगरानी और पनडुब्बियों का पता लगाने के क्षेत्र में एक अहम भूमिका निभाएगा।
सजग सेंसर और सटीक हथियार प्रणाली
‘अजय’ को जो बनाता है खास, वो हैं इसके शक्तिशाली सेंसर और हथियार:
- हल माउंटेड सोनार
- लो फ्रीक्वेंसी वेरिएबल डेप्थ सोनार (LFVDS)
ये सिस्टम जहाज को सतही और उथले पानी में पनडुब्बियों का सटीक पता लगाने और नष्ट करने की क्षमता देते हैं।
हथियार प्रणाली में शामिल हैं:
- अत्याधुनिक टॉरपीडो
- पनडुब्बी रोधी रॉकेट
- NSG-30 गन
- 12.7 मिमी SRCG
जहाज को डीजल इंजनों से शक्ति प्राप्त होती है और वाटरजेट से संचालित किया जाता है, जिससे यह तेजी से दिशा बदलने और उथले इलाकों में प्रभावी संचालन करने में सक्षम है।
राष्ट्रीय समुद्री सुरक्षा में अहम भूमिका
‘अजय’ का लॉन्च न केवल तकनीकी उपलब्धि है, बल्कि यह भारत की समुद्री रणनीति में आत्मनिर्भरता की दिशा में मील का पत्थर है। यह जहाज 80% से अधिक स्वदेशी सामग्री से बना है, जिससे भारत सरकार की ‘मेक इन इंडिया’ और ‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ योजनाओं को ठोस बल मिलता है।
वाइस एडमिरल देशमुख ने कहा:
“‘अजय’ सिर्फ एक युद्धपोत नहीं, बल्कि भारत की नौसैनिक शक्ति का प्रतीक है जो अब पूरी तरह स्वदेशी बन चुकी है।”
हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र में भारत की पकड़ होगी और मजबूत
‘अजय’ की तैनाती भारतीय नौसेना को हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र (IOR) में गहराई से निगरानी रखने, पनडुब्बियों की गतिविधियों को पहचानने और खतरों का मुकाबला करने की क्षमता देगी। यह जहाज बारूदी सुरंग बिछाने, तटीय गश्त, और दुश्मन की पनडुब्बी गतिविधियों के जवाब में तत्काल कार्रवाई में भी महत्वपूर्ण होगा।
GRSE: भारत की आत्मनिर्भर नौसैनिक शक्ति का स्तंभ
GRSE की सफलता इस बात का प्रमाण है कि भारत अब विश्व स्तरीय युद्धपोत डिजाइन और निर्माण में पूरी तरह सक्षम है। ASW SWC परियोजना की पूर्णता GRSE की विश्वसनीयता और क्षमता का उदाहरण है।
इस ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि के साथ, ‘अजय’ अब भारतीय नौसेना की रक्षा पंक्ति में एक और मज़बूत स्तंभ बन चुका है — समर्पित, सशक्त और स्वदेशी।
