Rising Through the Mountains: Project Arunank Marks 18 Glorious Years Strengthening India’s Himalayan Frontiers

In the spectacular yet unforgiving mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, where cliffs scrape the clouds and the terrain challenges every wheel that dares to roll across it, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has carved pathways of national security, connectivity, and hope. Project Arunank, one of BRO’s most strategically significant infrastructure missions in the Northeast, completed its 18th Raising Day today, celebrating 17 transformative years of relentless engineering triumphs along India’s frontier with China.
Project Arunank was launched in 2008 with a mission both simple and monumental: to integrate the state’s remote high-altitude districts with mainstream India, while ensuring rapid, all-season military mobility across the northern borders. Few development stories in independent India mirror the audacity and purpose that Arunank has brought to these peaks.
A Monumental Legacy in the Making
Over nearly two decades, engineers and jawans of the BRO have constructed and maintained over 696 kilometers of roads and 1.18 kilometers of major bridges in the region, overcoming extreme geographical, climatic, and administrative hurdles. Earthquakes, landslides, monsoon fury, snowbound heights—none have stopped the construction brigades, who often trek where machines cannot reach.
One of Arunank’s crowning achievements is the 278-kilometer Hapoli-Sarli-Huri road, a lifeline for the rugged Kurung Kumey district. For the first time since independence, tar roads reached villages long isolated by geography. The transformation is not merely logistical; it is deeply emotional, redefining access to healthcare, education, and livelihoods for communities that had waited generations for a road.
This landmark artery was further enhanced to National Highway double-lane standards in 2020, accelerating mobility and opening avenues for commercial and tourism development.
Roads Strengthening National Security
For the Indian Armed Forces, these roads represent strategic speed. Arunachal Pradesh shares a nearly 1,129-kilometer Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Every meter of improved infrastructure reinforces India’s preparedness.
Recent years have witnessed a rapid push:
• Kimin-Potin road, double-laned in 2021, has significantly improved connectivity toward Assam.
• Road to Maza, one of the final settlements before the LAC, was completed on December 28, 2022, fortifying India’s operational posture in the sensitive Upper Subansiri region.
• The TCC-Taksing road, vital for border deployment, was finalized early this year. Its extension, the TCC-Maza road, is gearing up for a historic inauguration in November 2025.
• Huri-Tapa and Taksing Ghora Camp–Lung OP roads are racing toward completion under mission-mode planning before the end of the year.
These connectivity breakthroughs reduce troop mobilization time drastically in high-threat zones and act as force multipliers during operational contingencies.
Engineering Innovation: Solutions Born from the Himalayas
The Himalayan terrain demands technologies ahead of the curve. Project Arunank has become a testing ground for sustainable and resilient construction practices, including:
• Steel slag reinforcement to increase durability
• Cut-and-cover tunnels in landslide-prone zones
• Geocells and geotextiles for slope strengthening
• Plastic sheet layering supporting longevity and waterproofing
• GGBFS concrete reducing carbon footprint
• Gabion walls offering environment-friendly stability
These technologies provide stronger, low-maintenance roads while minimizing ecological harm.
The Green Guardians of the Northeast
BRO has ensured that progress does not come at the cost of Arunachal’s lush landscape. Under the nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, Project Arunank has planted 23,850 trees across vulnerable ecological pockets, reinforcing its dual mission of connectivity and conservation.
Celebrating the Workforce that Moves Mountains
The Raising Day celebration featured a vibrant motorable expedition through the Naharlagun–Joram Top–Sangram–Ziro circuit. It showcased not just motor power, but pride in how far these roads have brought the region.
BRO leadership also announced a new suite of welfare measures for temporary labor forces, who remain the invisible backbone of Himalayan infrastructure building. These include:
• Safer and improved accommodation
• Warm thermal clothing for freezing heights
• Regular on-site medical and health camps

भारत की पूर्वोत्तर पर्वतीय सीमाओं पर, जहां आसमान को छूती खड़ी चट्टानें और उफनती नदियाँ हर कदम को चुनौती देती हैं, बॉर्डर रोड्स ऑर्गनाइजेशन (BRO) ने राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा, विकास और उम्मीद की सड़कें उकेर दी हैं। अरुणाचल प्रदेश में सामरिक और सामाजिक दृष्टि से अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण प्रोजेक्ट अरुणांक ने आज अपना 18वां स्थापना दिवस मनाया। इस अवसर पर BRO के इंजीनियरों और जवानों के 17 वर्षों की अदम्य दृढ़ता, कठिनतम पहाड़ी कार्य और सीमांत सुरक्षा के प्रति संकल्प को सलाम किया गया।
दूरदराज़ सीमांत तक पहुंची विकसित सड़कें
वर्ष 2008 में शुरू हुआ प्रोजेक्ट अरुणांक, अरुणाचल के दुर्गम पर्वतीय जिलों को भारत की मुख्यधारा से जोड़ने और सीमा क्षेत्रों में तैनात सशस्त्र बलों को सभी मौसमों में तेज़ सैन्य आवाजाही सुनिश्चित कराने के उद्देश्य से आरंभ हुआ था।
आज, यह परियोजना लगभग 696 किलोमीटर सड़कों और 1.18 किलोमीटर प्रमुख पुलों के निर्माण और रख-रखाव के साथ एक ऐतिहासिक विकास यात्रा को दर्शाती है।
भूकंप, भूस्खलन, ऊंचे दर्रे, बर्फबारी और तेज़ बरसात जैसी प्राकृतिक बाधाओं ने BRO की गति तो धीमी की, पर रोका कभी नहीं। कई बार मशीनों के समर्पण पर भी इंसानी साहस भारी पड़ा, जहां BRO के जवान पैदल चढ़कर रास्ता बनाते रहे।
बदलाव की मिसाल: हापोली-सरली-हुरी सड़क
अरुणांक की उपलब्धियों में सबसे उल्लेखनीय है 278 किलोमीटर लंबी हापोली-सरली-हुरी सड़क, जिसने कुरुंग कुमेय जिले के सबसे कठिन इलाकों तक स्वतंत्रता के बाद पहली बार टार सड़क पहुंचाई।
यह न केवल भौगोलिक परिवर्तन है बल्कि सामाजिक क्रांति है।
अब ग्रामीणों को इलाज, शिक्षा, रोजगार और आपातकालीन सेवाओं के लिए घंटों नहीं, कुछ ही समय में वाहनों की सुविधा मिल रही है।
वर्ष 2020 में इस मार्ग को राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग मानकों के अनुरूप डबल लेन में अपग्रेड किया गया, जिससे स्थानीय व्यापार और पर्यटन में नई ऊर्जा का संचार हुआ।
राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा को मज़बूती
चीन से लगी 1,129 किलोमीटर LAC की रक्षा में सड़कें सामरिक शक्ति बढ़ाती हैं। हाल के वर्षों में महत्वपूर्ण प्रगति दर्ज की गई:
• किमिन-पोटिन सड़क को 2021 में डबल लेन किया गया
• माज़ा तक सड़क निर्माण 28 दिसंबर 2022 को पूरा हुआ
• TCC-टाकसिंग मार्ग इस वर्ष प्रारंभ में पूरा हुआ
• TCC-माज़ा रोड नवंबर 2025 में उद्घाटन हेतु तैयार
• हुरी-टापा और टाकसिंग घोड़ा कैंप–लुंग OP रोड 2025 के अंत तक मिशन मोड में पूर्ण होने की तैयारी में
इन सड़कों ने सैनिकों की तैनाती और लॉजिस्टिक क्षमता को कई गुना तेज़ कर दिया है। संकट की घड़ी में हर मिनट की कीमत होती है और प्रोजेक्ट अरुणांक उन मिनटों को बचा रहा है।
नवाचार: हिमालय से सीखे नए इंजीनियरिंग पाठ
BRO ने पर्यावरण के अनुकूल और मजबूत तकनीकों का इस्तेमाल किया:
• स्टील स्लैग से सड़क की मजबूती बढ़ी
• कट-एंड-कवर टनल, भूस्खलन वाले इलाकों में सुरक्षा देती हैं
• जियोसेल और जियोटेक्सटाइल ढलान स्थिर करते हैं
• प्लास्टिक शीट लेयर सड़क को वॉटरप्रूफ बनाती है
• GGBFS कंक्रीट कार्बन फुटप्रिंट कम करता है
• गैबियन दीवारें पर्यावरण के लिए बेहतर और मजबूत विकल्प
हरियाली भी, विकास भी
“एक पेड़ मां के नाम” अभियान के तहत अरुणांक ने अब तक 23,850 पौधे लगाए हैं। BRO का यह संदेश स्पष्ट है —
सीमांत विकास हो, पर प्रकृति उसकी कीमत न चुकाए।
मजदूरों के सम्मान में नई पहल
स्थापना दिवस पर नाहरलगुन-झोरम टॉप-संग्राम-जीरो मोटरेबल अभियान आयोजित किया गया, जिससे सड़क सुरक्षा के प्रति जागरूकता फैलाई गई।
BRO ने मजदूरों के लिए महत्वपूर्ण कल्याण योजनाओं की घोषणा की:
• बेहतर आवास
• अत्यधिक ठंड वाले क्षेत्रों हेतु गर्म कपड़े
• नियमित स्वास्थ्य जांच और कैंप
वे मजदूर असली नायक हैं जो चट्टानों को रास्ता बनाते हैं और पहाड़ों से टक्कर लेकर भारत को जोड़ते हैं।
भविष्य: और ऊंचे, और मज़बूत रास्ते
आगामी योजनाओं में शामिल हैं:
• रणनीतिक सड़कों का चौड़ीकरण
• आधुनिक पुलों और टनलों का निर्माण
• हाईटेक डिजिटल मॉनिटरिंग सिस्टम
• सुरक्षित ढलान और पर्यावरण-अनुकूल इंजीनियरिंग
• लंबी उम्र वाली हाई-टेंसाइल सड़क सामग्री का प्रयोग
BRO का उद्देश्य है कि भारत की सीमा सड़कें वैश्विक पर्वतीय मानकों से आगे पहुंचें।
