1965 युद्ध की हीरक जयंती: रक्षामंत्री राजनाथ सिंह ने शहीदों और वीर सैनिकों को दी श्रद्धांजलि, कहा – “भारत अपनी तक़दीर खुद लिखता है”

नई दिल्ली के साउथ ब्लॉक में शुक्रवार को एक ऐतिहासिक और भावुक समारोह का आयोजन हुआ, जब भारत सरकार और भारतीय सेना ने 1965 भारत-पाक युद्ध की विजय की 60वीं वर्षगांठ मनाई। इस अवसर पर युद्ध के दिग्गजों, वीरता पुरस्कार प्राप्तकर्ताओं और शहीदों के परिजनों ने एकत्र होकर उन बलिदानों और वीरता को याद किया, जिसने भारत की अस्मिता और गौरव को नई ऊँचाइयाँ दीं।
कार्यक्रम में मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में पहुंचे रक्षामंत्री श्री राजनाथ सिंह ने अपने संबोधन में शहीदों को नमन किया और उन वीर जवानों की स्मृतियों को जीवित किया, जिनके साहस और बलिदान ने भारत की विजय का मार्ग प्रशस्त किया।
1965 की अमर गाथा
रक्षामंत्री ने कहा, “1965 का युद्ध केवल एक सैन्य अभियान नहीं था, यह एक ऐसा क्षण था जब भारत ने पूरी दुनिया को बता दिया कि उसकी संप्रभुता और अखंडता किसी भी कीमत पर डिग नहीं सकती।”
उन्होंने पाकिस्तान की साजिश ‘ऑपरेशन जिब्राल्टर’ का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा कि दुश्मन ने भारत की ताक़त को कम आँका था। “पाकिस्तान ने सोचा था कि घुसपैठ और गुरिल्ला हमलों से भारत को डराया जा सकता है, पर वह यह नहीं जानता था कि हर भारतीय सैनिक यह संकल्प लेकर लड़ता है कि भारत की संप्रभुता और अखंडता पर आँच नहीं आने देंगे,” उन्होंने कहा।
राजनाथ सिंह ने असाल उत्तर, चविंडा, फिल्लौरा, अखनूर और खेमें करण जैसी निर्णायक लड़ाइयों में भारतीय सैनिकों की वीरता को याद किया। उन्होंने विशेष रूप से परमवीर चक्र विजेता कंपनी क्वार्टर मास्टर हवलदार अब्दुल हमीद का उल्लेख किया, जिन्होंने असाल उत्तर की लड़ाई में दुश्मन के कई टैंकों को ध्वस्त कर वीरगति पाई। “हमारे वीर अब्दुल हमीद ने सिखाया कि बहादुरी हथियार के आकार से नहीं, दिल के आकार से तय होती है। उनका साहस हमें दिखाता है कि कठिन से कठिन परिस्थिति में भी साहस, संयम और देशभक्ति से असंभव को संभव किया जा सकता है।”
लाल बहादुर शास्त्री का नेतृत्व और राष्ट्रीय एकता
रक्षामंत्री ने कहा कि 1965 की विजय केवल सैनिकों की ताक़त का परिणाम नहीं थी, बल्कि यह पूरे देश की सामूहिक इच्छाशक्ति का प्रतीक थी। उन्होंने उस दौर में प्रधानमंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री के नेतृत्व को भी याद किया। “शास्त्री जी ने न केवल निर्णायक नेतृत्व दिया, बल्कि पूरे देश का मनोबल ऊँचा किया। प्रतिकूल परिस्थितियों में भी उन्होंने एकता दिखाई और युद्ध जीता। उनका दिया नारा ‘जय जवान, जय किसान’ आज भी हमारे संकल्प का प्रेरणा स्रोत है।”
अतीत से वर्तमान तक: ऑपरेशन सिंदूर
राजनाथ सिंह ने अपने संबोधन में हाल ही के ऑपरेशन सिंदूर का भी ज़िक्र किया, जिसे पहलगाम आतंकी हमले के बाद चलाया गया था। “वह कायराना हमला हमें दुखी कर गया, लेकिन हमारी हिम्मत नहीं तोड़ पाया। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी जी ने आतंकियों को सबक सिखाने का संकल्प लिया। ऑपरेशन सिंदूर ने दिखा दिया कि अब भारत के लिए जीत अपवाद नहीं, बल्कि आदत बन चुकी है। हमें इस आदत को बनाए रखना होगा,” उन्होंने कहा।
सैनिक कल्याण और आधुनिकीकरण
रक्षामंत्री ने सैनिकों, पूर्व सैनिकों और शहीद परिवारों के कल्याण को सरकार की सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता बताया। “रक्षा आधुनिकीकरण, सैनिकों का बेहतर प्रशिक्षण और आधुनिक उपकरण उपलब्ध कराना हमारी प्रतिबद्धता है, ताकि हमारी सेनाओं को कभी संसाधनों की कमी का सामना न करना पड़े।”
कार्यक्रम का मानवीय पहलू
कार्यक्रम में थलसेना प्रमुख जनरल उपेन्द्र द्विवेदी, पश्चिमी कमान के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल मनोज कुमार कटियार और दिल्ली एरिया के जीओसी लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल भवनीश कुमार समेत वरिष्ठ अधिकारी, युद्ध के दिग्गज, शहीदों के परिजन और वीरता पुरस्कार प्राप्तकर्ता मौजूद रहे।
अपने स्वागत भाषण में लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल कटियार ने 1965 युद्ध में पश्चिमी कमान की भूमिका का ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य प्रस्तुत किया। इस दौरान एक विशेष डॉक्यूमेंट्री भी प्रदर्शित की गई, जिसमें असाल उत्तर, अखनूर और खेमें करण की निर्णायक लड़ाइयों का स्मरण कराया गया।
वयोवृद्ध सैनिकों ने भी अपने अनुभव साझा किए। लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सतीश के. नाम्बियार (सेवानिवृत्त) ने युद्ध से जुड़ी रणनीतिक सीखों पर प्रकाश डाला, वहीं वीर चक्र विजेता मेजर आर.एस. बेदी (सेवानिवृत्त) ने अपने रोचक युद्ध संस्मरण सुनाए, जिनमें गोलाबारी और सैनिक भाईचारे के जज़्बे की झलक थी।
प्रेरणा का संदेश
समारोह के अंत में जब पूरा हॉल मौन श्रद्धांजलि में खड़ा हुआ, तो यह आयोजन केवल स्मरण नहीं, बल्कि भावी पीढ़ियों के लिए प्रेरणा बन गया।
1965 की विजय की हीरक जयंती ने यह दोहराया कि भारत की शक्ति केवल उसकी सैन्य क्षमता में नहीं, बल्कि उस सामूहिक संकल्प में निहित है जो साहस, बलिदान और सेवा-भाव से परिपूर्ण है।

Diamond Jubilee of the 1965 War: Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Pays Glowing Tributes to Veterans, Families of Fallen Heroes and Reiterates India’s Resolve of Strength and Self-Reliance

The sandstone walls of South Block, New Delhi, witnessed a solemn yet proud commemoration on Friday as the Government of India and the Indian Army came together to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the 1965 India-Pakistan war, sixty years after India’s resolute victory. The event brought together war veterans, gallantry awardees, and families of fallen heroes to honour the legacy of sacrifice, courage, and national unity that defined one of the most decisive moments in India’s military history.
At the centre of the commemorative ceremony was Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, who addressed the gathering with reverence and conviction, paying glowing tributes to the soldiers whose bravery shaped the nation’s destiny in 1965 and whose stories continue to inspire generations.
Remembering the Spirit of 1965
“The 1965 war was not merely a military campaign; it was a defining moment when India proved to the world that its sovereignty and integrity would never be compromised, no matter the odds,” the Defence Minister declared, his words echoing across the hallowed halls where veterans sat with pride and families of martyrs held back tears of remembrance.
Recalling Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, aimed at infiltrating guerrilla fighters into Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Rajnath Singh underscored that the enemy underestimated India’s resolve. “Pakistan thought it could frighten us through infiltration, guerrilla tactics and surprise attacks, but little did it know that every Indian soldier serves the motherland with the conviction that the sovereignty and integrity of the nation will never be compromised at any cost,” he said.
The Raksha Mantri highlighted the ferocious battles of Asal Uttar, Chawinda, Phillora, Khem Karan and Akhnoor, each of which tested the resilience of Indian forces. He spoke movingly of Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid, the Param Vir Chakra awardee who destroyed multiple Patton tanks of the Pakistani Army at Asal Uttar before making the supreme sacrifice. “Abdul Hamid taught us that bravery is not about the size of the weapon, but the size of the heart. His courage stands eternal as a lesson in how faith and sacrifice can turn the tide of battle,” he observed.
Leadership and National Resolve
Beyond the battlefield, Shri Rajnath Singh reminded the audience of the political courage displayed during the conflict. “No war is fought only on the battlefield; victory in war is the result of the collective resolve of the nation,” he said, paying tribute to then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. “Shastri ji’s leadership did not just command the forces, it lifted the morale of an entire nation. Under his stewardship, India found unity in adversity and courage in uncertainty.”
The Defence Minister reminded the audience that the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” coined during that era continues to inspire India’s resolve and determination even six decades later.
Linking the Past with the Present: Operation Sindoor
Drawing parallels between the sacrifices of 1965 and the modern challenges faced by the nation, Shri Rajnath Singh invoked the recent Operation Sindoor, India’s decisive counter-terrorism campaign launched after the Pahalgam terror attack. “The cowardly attack in Pahalgam filled us with grief, but it did not weaken us. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi resolved to teach the terrorists a lesson they would never forget. Operation Sindoor showed our enemies that victory is no longer an exception for India – it has become our habit,” he remarked, underlining how history continues to shape India’s defence posture.
The Defence Minister’s remarks reinforced a central message: India does not wait for destiny to unfold; it creates its own destiny.
Commitment to Welfare and Modernisation
Reiterating the government’s “top priority” towards soldiers, veterans, and their families, Shri Rajnath Singh said: “Our resolve of defence modernisation, better training of soldiers and equipment upgrades are aimed to ensure that the forces never face a lack of resources. The welfare of serving soldiers, veterans, their dependents and the families of fallen heroes remains our most sacred duty.”
He stressed that India’s ongoing defence reforms, procurement of cutting-edge technologies, and emphasis on indigenous production under Atmanirbhar Bharat were direct reflections of the government’s resolve to secure the nation’s future.
A Gathering of Heroes
The ceremony, hosted by the Indian Army, was attended by an esteemed gathering that included Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Western Army Commander Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, and Delhi Area Commander Lt Gen Bhavnish Kumar, alongside decorated veterans, families of fallen soldiers, and serving officers.
Lt Gen Katiyar, in his welcome address, provided a historical perspective on the role of Western Command during the 1965 war, recalling operational challenges, tactical manoeuvres, and battlefield victories. A specially curated documentary screened during the event revisited the battles of Asal Uttar, Akhnoor, and Khem Karan, immersing the audience in the heroism of that era.
The ceremony grew deeply personal when veterans took to the stage. Lt Gen Satish K Nambiar (Retd) offered a strategic reflection on the war’s lessons for modern India, while Vir Chakra awardee Maj RS Bedi (Retd) recounted his battlefield experiences, describing the relentless sound of artillery fire and the unshakable camaraderie of soldiers under fire. Their testimonies stood as living reminders of the resilience and sacrifice that defined 1965.
A Legacy for Future Generations
As the event drew to a close, the hall stood united in silent homage, recalling the thousands who had laid down their lives for the tricolour. The gathering was more than a commemoration; it was a bridge between generations, an inspiration for today’s soldiers and a lesson in unity for tomorrow’s citizens.
The Diamond Jubilee of the 1965 war reaffirmed that India’s strength lies not just in its military might but in its collective spirit – a blend of courage, sacrifice, and the resolve to remain unyielding in the face of aggression.
Sixty years on, the message remained unchanged: India’s soldiers fight not for territory or triumph, but for the inviolable dignity of the nation.
