Airfield Environment Committee Meeting Held at Jodhpur Air Force Station: Focus on Bird Hazard Reduction and Safer Aviation

In a significant step toward ensuring aviation safety and environmental balance, the biannual Airfield Environment Management Committee (AEMC) meeting was held at the Air Force Station Jodhpur on September 9, 2025. The high-level meeting brought together civil and military authorities to deliberate upon pressing environmental challenges impacting aviation operations in one of the Indian Air Force’s key western sector bases.
The meeting was chaired by Divisional Commissioner of Jodhpur, Dr. (Mrs.) Pratibha Singh, and attended by a wide spectrum of senior officials including Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station Jodhpur, Air Commodore J. Sriram, VM, District Collector and Magistrate of Jodhpur, Police Commissioner of Jodhpur City, Commissioner, Jodhpur Development Authority, Chief Executive of Jodhpur Municipal Corporation, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Airport Director, and several representatives from local civic bodies and the Air Force Station Jodhpur.
Recognition of Efforts in Wildlife Hazard Reduction
The session commenced on a positive note with the Divisional Commissioner and senior officials appreciating the coordinated efforts of the State Administration, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), and the Indian Air Force authorities in successfully relocating nilgai (blue bulls) from the periphery of the airfield. The overpopulation of nilgai had posed a considerable threat to flight safety in recent years. The successful operation was hailed as a milestone in mitigating wildlife hazards that directly endangered both military and civilian aircraft operations.
Reviewing Environmental Challenges
The committee’s discussions then pivoted to a comprehensive review of environmental issues in and around Jodhpur’s airspace that contribute to aviation risks, particularly the menace of bird strikes. Experts highlighted that open drains, unauthorized human settlements, and poorly managed garbage disposal sites in proximity to the airfield are the primary attractants for birds, especially scavenging species such as kites and crows. These conditions have significantly increased the frequency of bird activity, creating a persistent threat to aircraft during take-offs and landings.
The dangers of bird hits have been recognized globally as one of the most common aviation hazards, capable of causing catastrophic engine failures. Given that Jodhpur air base hosts fighter operations, advanced trainer aircraft, and also supports civilian flights, the threat assumes both strategic military importance and public safety relevance.
Strengthening Coordination Between Civil and Military Authorities
The committee strongly emphasized the need for continuous monitoring, real-time reporting, and environmental management strategies to address bird hazards effectively. The Indian Air Force authorities reiterated their commitment to working in close synergy with district administration, municipal bodies, and forest officials to implement sustainable solutions.
Particular focus was laid on strengthening garbage management systems, ensuring closure of open drains, and preventing unauthorized encroachments near the airfield. The Divisional Commissioner urged civic authorities to take stricter enforcement measures against practices that attract birds to sensitive aviation zones.
Awareness and Public Participation
Another key highlight of the meeting was the emphasis on community awareness programs. Officials agreed that while administrative measures play a critical role, the cooperation of local residents is equally vital. The committee discussed plans to spread awareness among citizens regarding the dangers posed by improper waste disposal, open slaughterhouse activities, and unchecked urban encroachment.
The goal, as underlined by the Divisional Commissioner, is to create a safe and sustainable aviation environment through a coordinated and multi-stakeholder approach—balancing ecological conservation with the critical operational requirements of both military and civilian aviation.
A Base of Strategic Importance
Air Force Station Jodhpur is one of the most strategically important airbases in western India, housing advanced fighter aircraft and playing a frontline role in India’s defence preparedness against potential threats from across the western borders. It also doubles as a civil enclave, handling regular passenger traffic. Ensuring air safety around such a vital hub is not just a matter of local environmental concern but also a national security imperative.
The AEMC meeting reaffirmed the collective responsibility of civil and military stakeholders in protecting aviation assets and human lives. By addressing bird strike challenges, improving environmental management, and involving the local community, the committee’s efforts are expected to pave the way for a safer and more sustainable future for Jodhpur’s skies.

जोधपुर वायुसेना स्टेशन पर हवाई क्षेत्र पर्यावरण समिति की बैठक: पक्षी संकट कम करने और सुरक्षित उड़ान पर जोर

पश्चिमी क्षेत्र के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण वायुसेना ठिकानों में से एक, वायुसेना स्टेशन जोधपुर में 9 सितम्बर 2025 को द्विवार्षिक हवाई क्षेत्र पर्यावरण प्रबंधन समिति (AEMC) की बैठक आयोजित हुई। इस बैठक का उद्देश्य सैन्य और नागरिक विमानन दोनों के लिए सुरक्षित माहौल सुनिश्चित करना और पर्यावरणीय चुनौतियों का समाधान खोजना था, जो हवाई सुरक्षा को प्रभावित करती हैं।
बैठक की अध्यक्षता जोधपुर संभागीय आयुक्त डॉ. (श्रीमती) प्रतिभा सिंह ने की। इस अवसर पर वायुसेना स्टेशन जोधपुर के वायु अफसर कमांडिंग एयर कमोडोर जे. श्रीराम, वीएम, जोधपुर जिला कलेक्टर एवं जिला मजिस्ट्रेट, जोधपुर शहर पुलिस आयुक्त, जोधपुर विकास प्राधिकरण आयुक्त, जोधपुर नगर निगम के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी, डीएफओ, हवाई अड्डा प्रबंधक और नगर प्रशासन एवं वायुसेना स्टेशन जोधपुर के अन्य वरिष्ठ अधिकारी उपस्थित थे।
नीलगाय स्थानांतरण अभियान की सराहना
बैठक की शुरुआत सकारात्मक नोट पर हुई, जहां संभागीय आयुक्त और वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों ने राज्य प्रशासन, मुख्य वन संरक्षक (सीसीएफ) और वायुसेना अधिकारियों के समन्वित प्रयासों की सराहना की। इन प्रयासों से वायुसेना स्टेशन के आसपास नीलगायों को सफलतापूर्वक स्थानांतरित किया गया, जिससे उड़ानों को होने वाले खतरे में कमी आई। हाल के वर्षों में नीलगायों की संख्या अधिक होने से रनवे और उसके आसपास गंभीर सुरक्षा संकट उत्पन्न हो रहा था।
पर्यावरणीय चुनौतियों की समीक्षा
इसके बाद बैठक में उन प्रमुख कारणों पर चर्चा हुई, जिनसे पक्षियों के टकराव (Bird Strikes) का खतरा बढ़ रहा है। इसमें विशेष रूप से खुले नाले, अनधिकृत बस्तियां और कचरे के ढेर शामिल हैं, जो गिद्ध, कौवों और चीलों जैसे scavenger पक्षियों को आकर्षित करते हैं। यह समस्या विशेष रूप से टेकऑफ और लैंडिंग के समय विमानों के लिए बड़ा खतरा पैदा करती है।
पक्षियों की वजह से होने वाली दुर्घटनाएं विश्वभर में विमानन सुरक्षा की सबसे गंभीर चुनौतियों में गिनी जाती हैं। जोधपुर वायुसेना अड्डा जहां लड़ाकू विमान, उन्नत प्रशिक्षण विमान और नागरिक विमान संचालित होते हैं, वहां यह समस्या सिर्फ स्थानीय नहीं बल्कि रणनीतिक दृष्टि से राष्ट्रीय महत्व की है।
नागरिक-सैन्य समन्वय पर बल
समिति ने इस खतरे से निपटने के लिए लगातार निगरानी, समयबद्ध रिपोर्टिंग और पर्यावरणीय प्रबंधन रणनीतियों की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया। वायुसेना अधिकारियों ने आश्वासन दिया कि वे जिला प्रशासन, नगर निगम और वन विभाग के साथ मिलकर ठोस कदम उठाएंगे।
बैठक में विशेष रूप से कचरा प्रबंधन प्रणाली को मजबूत करने, खुले नालों को बंद करने और हवाई अड्डे के आसपास अवैध निर्माण रोकने पर जोर दिया गया। संभागीय आयुक्त ने साफ कहा कि स्थानीय प्रशासन को इस दिशा में सख्ती दिखानी होगी।
जागरूकता और नागरिक भागीदारी
बैठक का एक अहम बिंदु था स्थानीय नागरिकों में जागरूकता बढ़ाना। समिति ने इस बात पर सहमति जताई कि प्रशासनिक प्रयास तभी सफल होंगे जब आम जनता भी सहयोग करेगी। इसके लिए जल्द ही जागरूकता अभियान चलाने पर विचार किया गया, ताकि लोग कचरा फेंकने, अवैध बूचड़खानों और अतिक्रमण जैसी गतिविधियों से परहेज करें।
राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा से जुड़ा विषय
जोधपुर वायुसेना स्टेशन पश्चिमी भारत का एक प्रमुख सामरिक अड्डा है, जहां से लड़ाकू अभियानों और प्रशिक्षण मिशनों के साथ-साथ नागरिक यात्री उड़ानें भी संचालित होती हैं। ऐसे अड्डे के आसपास सुरक्षित वायु क्षेत्र सुनिश्चित करना न केवल स्थानीय आवश्यकता है बल्कि यह राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा से जुड़ा हुआ विषय है।
इस बैठक ने एक बार फिर यह स्पष्ट कर दिया कि वायुसेना, राज्य प्रशासन और नागरिक संस्थाओं की संयुक्त जिम्मेदारी है कि वे मिलकर हवाई सुरक्षा को मजबूत करें। पक्षियों से होने वाले खतरे को कम करने, पर्यावरणीय हालात सुधारने और नागरिक भागीदारी बढ़ाने से जोधपुर के आसमान को और सुरक्षित और टिकाऊ बनाया जा सकेगा।
