New Delhi : In response to a recent drone attack by militants in Manipur, the Central government has sanctioned the use of anti-drone guns by paramilitary forces stationed in the state. This decision comes on the heels of a September 1st attack where alleged Kuki militants utilized advanced drones to deploy RPGs.

Currently, the Border Security Force (BSF) employs these anti-drone guns along the western borders with Pakistan. A senior security official stated that Manipur will also receive multiple anti-drone guns due to the unprecedented and alarming shift in tactics by Kuki militants.

The forces have been granted permission to utilize these guns, and the state government has been instructed to procure additional units to counter this novel threat.

The September 1st attack in Koutruk, Imphal West, marked the first instance where alleged Kuki militants deployed high-tech drones to drop bombs on BSF and Manipur Police personnel.

To address this emerging challenge, the Assam Rifles has been directed to deploy their anti-drone gun, and the state government will procure more units. Initial deployment will be strategic, creating a web-like cover.

Experts highlight that while drone bombs are typically used in conventional warfare, their recent deployment to target security forces and civilians in Manipur poses a grave threat.

The Manipur Police, in a statement, emphasized that such attacks necessitate highly trained individuals with technical expertise and assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any contingencies.

This move signifies the Centre’s commitment to adapting security measures in response to evolving threats and ensuring the safety of both security personnel and civilians in the region.
