DSSC Wellington Charts the Future Battlefield: AI, Unmanned Systems & AtmaNirbharta Take Centre Stage

In a resounding display of vision and technological foresight, the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Wellington hosted a pathbreaking seminar on Emerging Technologies, underscoring how Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Advanced Technologies, and Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS) are revolutionising the battlefield of the future. The event brought together distinguished leaders from the defence, technology, and academic sectors to deliberate on how these disruptive technologies are reshaping military operations and why India must embrace self-reliance in defence innovation.

The seminar, part of DSSC’s ongoing efforts to prepare the next generation of military leadership, provided a comprehensive platform for officers and participants to understand the transformational impact of niche technologies on modern warfare. Experts from leading technology firms and the defence sector shared their insights on the opportunities and challenges posed by AI, autonomous systems, and other cutting-edge capabilities.

AI, Decision Support & Battlefield Augmented Reality

A key highlight of the seminar was the address by Mr. Mayur Datar, Vice President of Microsoft India, who eloquently detailed how AI and ML are no longer just futuristic concepts but immediate force multipliers for modern militaries. He explained how AI-powered decision support systems can empower battlefield commanders with real-time, data-driven insights, enabling faster and more effective operational decisions. Additionally, Mr. Datar showcased how Battlefield Augmented Reality (AR) can dramatically enhance situational awareness, providing troops with an unparalleled edge in dynamic combat environments.

India’s Bold Technological Future: From Service Provider to Technology Generator

In a thought-provoking session, Mr. Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho, presented his bold vision for India’s technological future. Titled “Empowering India’s Technological Future: Transition from Service Provider to Technology Generator”, his talk emphasised the critical need for India to move beyond being a global IT service hub to becoming a producer of core technologies. He urged the defence establishment to foster indigenous technological capabilities, asserting that tech sovereignty is essential for true strategic autonomy.

Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS): Opportunities and Challenges

Mr. Smit Shah, President of Drone Federation of India, delivered invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of UAS in military operations. Highlighting the diverse applications of drones, from reconnaissance and logistics to offensive operations, Mr. Shah stressed the importance of domestic innovation in drone technologies. He called for a robust counter-UAS strategy, essential to defending against the increasing threat posed by adversarial drone swarms and autonomous systems.

AtmaNirbharta & Military Preparedness

Throughout the seminar, speakers and participants echoed a common theme — the urgent need for AtmaNirbharta (self-reliance) in defence technologies. The rapid evolution of AI, UAS, and other advanced technologies leaves little room for dependence on foreign imports. India’s ability to indigenously develop, deploy, and counter such capabilities will determine its preparedness for future conflicts.

The event served as a dynamic convergence of technological leadership and military vision, reinforcing DSSC Wellington’s role as a crucible for developing future-ready leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of 21st-century warfare.

The seminar concluded with renewed emphasis on fostering homegrown innovation, building resilient tech ecosystems, and ensuring that India’s armed forces possess the self-reliant, tech-enabled warfighting capabilities required for the battles of tomorrow.

रक्षा सेवाओं का प्रमुख प्रशिक्षण संस्थान डिफेंस सर्विसेज स्टाफ कॉलेज (DSSC) वेलिंगटन आजकल केवल सैन्य रणनीति ही नहीं, बल्कि तकनीकी नवाचार का भी केंद्र बन चुका है। इसी क्रम में डीएसएससी में आयोजित एक अहम सेमिनार ने यह स्पष्ट कर दिया कि कैसे कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता (AI), मशीन लर्निंग (ML), उन्नत तकनीकें और मानव रहित स्वायत्त प्रणाली (UAS) भविष्य के युद्धक्षेत्र को पूरी तरह बदलने जा रही हैं।

इस संगोष्ठी में देश के तकनीकी और रक्षा क्षेत्रों की दिग्गज हस्तियों ने भाग लिया और उभरती प्रौद्योगिकियों के अवसरों एवं खतरों पर गहन चर्चा की। डीएसएससी की यह पहल देश की अगली पीढ़ी के सैन्य नेतृत्व को तकनीकी रूप से सशक्त और रणनीतिक रूप से तैयार बनाने की दिशा में एक बड़ा कदम मानी जा रही है।

कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता से बढ़ेगी युद्धक्षेत्र में स्थिति की स्पष्टता

मायूर डाटर, वाइस प्रेसिडेंट, माइक्रोसॉफ्ट इंडिया ने सेमिनार को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि एआई और एमएल अब भविष्य की अवधारणा नहीं, बल्कि वर्तमान का अहम हथियार बन चुकी हैं। उन्होंने बताया कि कैसे AI आधारित निर्णय समर्थन प्रणाली (Decision Support System) युद्धक्षेत्र में कमांडरों को रीयल-टाइम डेटा और विश्लेषण प्रदान कर सकती हैं, जिससे तेजी से सटीक फैसले लिए जा सकते हैं। साथ ही, बैटलफील्ड ऑगमेंटेड रियलिटी (AR) तकनीक सैनिकों की जागरूकता और सुरक्षा दोनों को नई ऊंचाई पर ले जा सकती है।

भारत को सेवा प्रदाता से प्रौद्योगिकी जनक बनना होगा

जोहो कंपनी के सीईओ श्रीधर वेम्बू ने अपने विचार साझा करते हुए कहा कि भारत को अब सिर्फ आईटी सेवा प्रदाता के रूप में सीमित नहीं रहना चाहिए, बल्कि उसे मूलभूत तकनीकों का निर्माता बनना होगा। उन्होंने जोर देकर कहा कि यदि भारत को वास्तविक रणनीतिक स्वतंत्रता हासिल करनी है तो उसे तकनीकी आत्मनिर्भरता (Tech Sovereignty) की दिशा में निर्णायक कदम उठाने होंगे।

ड्रोन और मानव रहित प्रणालियों में स्वदेशी नवाचार की जरूरत

ड्रोन फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडिया के अध्यक्ष स्मित शाह ने UAS (Unmanned Autonomous Systems) के सैन्य इस्तेमाल और भविष्य की चुनौतियों पर महत्वपूर्ण जानकारियां साझा कीं। उन्होंने बताया कि आधुनिक युद्ध में ड्रोन न केवल निगरानी, बल्कि रसद, हमले और बचाव अभियानों में भी निर्णायक भूमिका निभा रहे हैं। ऐसे में भारत को घरेलू स्तर पर ड्रोन निर्माण, उनकी तैनाती और काउंटर-UAS रणनीति विकसित करनी होगी, ताकि दुश्मन के ड्रोन हमलों से प्रभावी तरीके से निपटा जा सके।

आत्मनिर्भरता से मजबूत होगी सैन्य शक्ति

पूरा सेमिनार इस बात पर केंद्रित रहा कि भारत को रक्षा क्षेत्र में विदेशी निर्भरता छोड़कर आत्मनिर्भर बनना होगा। AI, ड्रोन, ऑगमेंटेड रियलिटी जैसी तकनीकों की तेज़ी से बढ़ती भूमिका में पीछे रहना भारत की रणनीतिक स्थिति को कमजोर कर सकता है। अतः समय की मांग है कि स्वदेशी नवाचार को बढ़ावा दिया जाए और भविष्य के युद्धों के लिए सेना को तकनीक-सक्षम बनाया जाए।

डीएसएससी वेलिंगटन का यह आयोजन भारत की सैन्य तैयारियों और तकनीकी विकास के बीच सामंजस्य स्थापित करने की दिशा में ऐतिहासिक कदम साबित हुआ। यह सेमिनार न केवल रक्षा बलों को तकनीक से सशक्त बनाने की सोच को मज़बूती देता है, बल्कि भारत के तकनीकी आत्मनिर्भरता के सपने को भी नई उड़ान देता है।
