At the Retiring Officers Seminar 2025 held in the national capital, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi presented the ‘Veteran Achievers Award’ to three extraordinary veterans for their remarkable post-retirement contributions to society.
The ceremony was attended by senior Army officials, veterans, defence families, and serving officers, all of whom witnessed an emotional yet inspiring tribute to the spirit of soldiering beyond duty. “Every soldier carries within him the fire of service. Whether on the battlefield, in classrooms, or in communities, our veterans continue to shape a stronger and united India.”
His words echoed through the hall, drawing standing applause for the veterans whose lives remain shining examples of selfless devotion to the nation.
Lieutenant Colonel Chandra Shekar P S (Retd): Mentoring the Next Generation of Warriors
Among the awardees, Lt Col Chandra Shekar P S (Retd) from Bengaluru has become a symbol of transformation — from a soldier defending the nation to a mentor shaping its defenders. Post-retirement, he has dedicated himself to personality development, soft skills training, and SSB (Service Selection Board) coaching, mentoring over 60 aspirants who have successfully joined the Indian Armed Forces.
A man of discipline and deep patriotism, Lt Col Chandra Shekar’s mentorship extends beyond the SSB syllabus. He instils in his students the values of integrity, resilience, and service before self — the same virtues that define every Indian soldier. His sessions, described as a blend of military precision and emotional intelligence, prepare aspirants not just for the interview but for life itself.
Beyond mentoring, Lt Col Chandra Shekar is also an accomplished poet and musician. He has composed 62 military-themed songs and written over 200 poems celebrating the bravery, sacrifice, and camaraderie of soldiers. His creative work has become an emotional tribute to the Indian Army, bridging the gap between uniformed life and civilian appreciation.
Through his art, he continues to keep the spirit of soldiering alive — proving that patriotism flows not only through action, but also through words and melody.
Subedar Major Tarendra Nath Basumatary (Retd): From the Battlefield to the Silver Screen
Another inspiring story honoured at the ceremony was that of Subedar Major Tarendra Nath Basumatary (Retd), a name now celebrated across Assam and the Bodo heartland. After a distinguished military career, he transitioned into the world of cinema and culture — becoming a renowned actor, director, and writer with over 70 films to his credit.
Basumatary’s journey reflects how the leadership and discipline of a soldier can transcend into creativity and community upliftment. His films often explore social issues, identity, and the values of unity and courage — deeply rooted in his military experience.
But his story doesn’t stop at cinema. The former Subedar Major also runs a multi-sector farming enterprise in Kokrajhar, employing numerous local families and empowering rural communities through sustainable livelihood opportunities. His enterprise stands as a living example of veterans contributing to Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting self-reliance at the grassroots level.
In addition, he uses his YouTube channel to motivate youth across Assam and Northeast India, encouraging them to serve the nation, stay disciplined, and pursue creative ambitions responsibly. His dual role — as an artist and a social entrepreneur — embodies the Indian Army’s philosophy that service is not a chapter, but a lifelong story.
Sapper Balwinder Singh (Retd): The Torchbearer of Rural Empowerment
The third awardee, Sapper Balwinder Singh (Retd) from Fazilka, Punjab, exemplifies grassroots transformation through his selfless dedication to mentoring rural youth. Since his retirement, he has been training and preparing boys and girls — free of cost — for recruitment into the Indian Armed Forces.
Over the years, his tireless efforts have helped more than 2,000 young aspirants achieve their dream of wearing the uniform. His initiative, started from a small open ground, has now evolved into a movement of hope and inspiration across the border districts of Punjab.
Recognising his contribution to youth empowerment and national service, the Chief Minister of Punjab honoured him for his relentless social work and mentorship.
Sapper Balwinder’s story is that of a soldier who continues to stand guard — not on the borders, but on the social frontier of youth empowerment. His mission is simple yet powerful: to ensure that every capable young man or woman from rural India gets an opportunity to serve the nation with pride.
Veterans as Pillars of Society: The Spirit of Service Beyond Duty
The Veteran Achievers Award 2025 ceremony was more than just a felicitation — it was a profound reminder of the Indian Army’s living values. It underscored that service, sacrifice, and patriotism do not fade with retirement; they evolve into mentorship, social reform, and cultural contribution.

देशभक्ति, नेतृत्व और जीवनभर सेवा की भावना के उत्सव में भारतीय सेना ने एक बार फिर यह सिद्ध कर दिया कि वर्दी उतारने के बाद भी सेवा जारी रहती है। राष्ट्रीय राजधानी में आयोजित रिटायरिंग ऑफिसर्स सेमिनार 2025 के अवसर पर थल सेनाध्यक्ष जनरल उपेन्द्र द्विवेदी ने तीन असाधारण पूर्व सैनिकों को ‘वेटरन अचीवर्स अवॉर्ड’ से सम्मानित किया।
इस समारोह में सेना के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी, सेवा निवृत्त अधिकारी, सैनिक परिवार और वर्तमान अधिकारी उपस्थित थे। यह कार्यक्रम भावनात्मक और प्रेरक दोनों ही रूपों में एक संदेश देता है कि सेवानिवृत्ति वर्दी के अंत का संकेत नहीं, बल्कि नई जिम्मेदारियों, मार्गदर्शन और राष्ट्र निर्माण की दिशा में कदम रखने का संकेत है।

लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल चंद्र शेखर पी. एस. (से.नि.): अगले युद्धवीरों के मार्गदर्शक
सम्मानित वेटरन्स में से लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल चंद्र शेखर पी. एस. (से.नि.) बेंगलुरु से, एक प्रेरक उदाहरण बन चुके हैं। उन्होंने सेना से सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद व्यक्तित्व विकास, सॉफ्ट स्किल्स प्रशिक्षण और एसएसबी (Service Selection Board) कोचिंग के माध्यम से 60 से अधिक युवाओं को भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों में भर्ती होने में मदद की है।

दूसरे सम्मानित वेटरन सूबेदार मेजर तारेंद्र नाथ बसुमतारी (से.नि.) का नाम असम और बोडो क्षेत्र में अब प्रेरणा का प्रतीक बन चुका है। उन्होंने सेना में उल्लेखनीय सेवा के बाद सिनेमा और संस्कृति के क्षेत्र में प्रवेश किया, और अब एक प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता, निर्देशक और लेखक के रूप में जाने जाते हैं, जिनकी 70 से अधिक फिल्मों में भूमिका रही है।

तीसरे सम्मानित वेटरन सैपर बलविंदर सिंह (से.नि.) फाजिल्का, पंजाब से हैं। वे ग्रामीण युवाओं को निःशुल्क प्रशिक्षण और मार्गदर्शन प्रदान करने में अग्रणी हैं, ताकि वे भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों में भर्ती हो सकें।
अब तक उनके प्रयासों से 2,000 से अधिक युवा अपने सपनों को साकार कर चुके हैं। उनका यह पहल छोटे मैदान से शुरू होकर पंजाब के सीमांत जिलों में उम्मीद और प्रेरणा की लहर बन गई है।
उनके योगदान के लिए पंजाब के मुख्यमंत्री ने उन्हें सम्मानित किया। सैपर बलविंदर की कहानी यह दिखाती है कि सैनिक सीमाओं पर ही नहीं, बल्कि समाज के सबसे दूरस्थ कोनों में भी सुरक्षा और अवसर सुनिश्चित करते हैं। उनका मिशन सरल और शक्तिशाली है: हर ग्रामीण युवा को देश सेवा का अवसर प्रदान करना।

भारतीय सेना द्वारा वार्षिक रूप से आयोजित रिटायरिंग ऑफिसर्स सेमिनार सेवा निवृत्त अधिकारियों को मार्गदर्शन देने और संक्रमण की प्रक्रिया को सहज बनाने के उद्देश्य से आयोजित होता है।
इस वर्ष का विषय था — “सेवा जीवनभर की यात्रा; एक मजबूत और एकजुट भारत का निर्माण”। यह थीम उन अधिकारियों को प्रेरित करती है जो रिटायरमेंट के करीब हैं कि इसे केवल सेवा का अंत न समझें, बल्कि राष्ट्र के प्रति नई सेवा की शुरुआत मानें।
