IB Officer from Hyderabad Killed in Pahalgam Terror Attack; Shot in Front of Family While on Vacation

In a shocking and heart-wrenching incident, an officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) posted in Hyderabad was shot dead by terrorists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on Tuesday while vacationing with his family. The officer, identified as Manish Ranjan, hailed from Bihar and had been working in the ministerial section of the IB’s Hyderabad office for the past two years.
The attack occurred during a Leave Travel Concession (LTC) visit to the picturesque valley. According to initial inputs from IB sources, Ranjan was targeted and gunned down in full view of his wife and children, sending shockwaves through the intelligence and security community.
Eyewitnesses say the terrorists fired at close range before fleeing the spot. The incident took place near the Aru Valley road, a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam, Anantnag district.
Manish Ranjan, said to be in his early 40s, was not on official duty at the time of the attack and had taken approved leave to spend time with his family. Officials say he had no recent field postings or operational role in the valley, which makes the targeted nature of the killing even more alarming.
High-Level Security Response Initiated
The Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with Indian Army and CRPF units, swiftly launched a massive search operation to trace the terrorists responsible. Senior officials from the Intelligence Bureau and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) are also monitoring the situation closely.
“Initial leads suggest it was a targeted killing. We are verifying if there was a prior reconnaissance or if the terrorists acted on spontaneous intelligence,” said a senior officer on condition of anonymity.
Nationwide Condemnation and Mourning
The killing has sparked nationwide outrage, with tributes pouring in from various quarters. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and condemned the heinous act, assuring that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
“We stand with the family of our fallen officer. His sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Shah stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Manish Ranjan is survived by his wife and two children. His mortal remains are being airlifted to his native town in Bihar, where a full state honors funeral is expected.
Rising Security Concerns
This incident underscores the persisting threat posed by terrorism in Kashmir, particularly in areas frequented by civilians and tourists. While there has been a relative improvement in the security situation over recent years, targeted killings have remained a cause of concern.
Authorities are also probing whether there was any lapse in local intelligence or if Ranjan’s identity as an IB officer was known beforehand.
The intelligence fraternity is in mourning, with several of Ranjan’s colleagues describing him as a diligent and honest officer who kept a low profile.

जम्मू-कश्मीर के पहलगाम में मंगलवार को आतंकवादियों द्वारा किए गए हमले में खुफिया ब्यूरो (IB) के एक अधिकारी की निर्मम हत्या कर दी गई। यह हमला तब हुआ जब अधिकारी मनीष रंजन अपनी छुट्टियों के दौरान परिवार संग कश्मीर भ्रमण पर थे। घटना उस समय की है जब वह अपने परिवार के साथ एलटीसी (लीव ट्रेवल कंसेशन) यात्रा पर थे।
मनीष रंजन बिहार के निवासी थे और पिछले दो वर्षों से हैदराबाद स्थित आईबी कार्यालय के मिनिस्ट्रियल सेक्शन में कार्यरत थे। प्रारंभिक जानकारी के अनुसार, आतंकियों ने उन्हें उनके पत्नी और बच्चों के सामने गोली मारी, जिससे पूरे खुफिया और सुरक्षा तंत्र में शोक की लहर दौड़ गई है।
घटना अनंतनाग जिले के प्रसिद्ध पर्यटक स्थल अरु वैली रोड के पास हुई, जहाँ रंजन परिवार के साथ घूमने आए थे। प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के अनुसार, आतंकियों ने बेहद नजदीक से गोली चलाई और तुरंत मौके से फरार हो गए।
तत्काल सुरक्षा कार्रवाई शुरू
हमले के बाद जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस, भारतीय सेना और सीआरपीएफ ने संयुक्त रूप से बड़े स्तर पर सर्च ऑपरेशन शुरू किया है। खुफिया ब्यूरो और गृह मंत्रालय (MHA) के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी भी स्थिति पर नजर बनाए हुए हैं।
एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने नाम न जाहिर करने की शर्त पर कहा, “प्रारंभिक जांच में यह एक सुनियोजित हत्या प्रतीत होती है। हम जांच कर रहे हैं कि क्या यह पहले से की गई रेकी का नतीजा था या फिर मौके पर ही जानकारी मिलने के बाद हमला किया गया।”
राष्ट्रभर में आक्रोश और शोक
इस हमले के बाद देशभर में शोक और आक्रोश व्याप्त है। केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह ने इस अमानवीय घटना की निंदा करते हुए शोक संतप्त परिवार के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त की और अपराधियों को जल्द पकड़ने का आश्वासन दिया।
शाह ने एक्स (पूर्व में ट्विटर) पर कहा, “हम हमारे वीर अधिकारी के परिवार के साथ हैं। उनका बलिदान व्यर्थ नहीं जाएगा।”
मनीष रंजन अपने पीछे पत्नी और दो बच्चों को छोड़ गए हैं। उनका पार्थिव शरीर हवाई मार्ग से उनके पैतृक गांव बिहार भेजा जा रहा है, जहाँ पूरे राजकीय सम्मान के साथ अंतिम संस्कार किया जाएगा।
कश्मीर में फिर से उभरते खतरे
यह हमला दिखाता है कि घाटी में आम नागरिकों और पर्यटकों के बीच भी आतंकवाद का खतरा लगातार बना हुआ है। पिछले वर्षों में सुरक्षा स्थिति में सुधार हुआ है, लेकिन लक्षित हत्याएं अभी भी चिंता का विषय बनी हुई हैं।
जांच एजेंसियां यह भी पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रही हैं कि क्या अधिकारी की पहचान पहले से उजागर हो गई थी या कोई स्थानीय चूक हुई।
मनीष रंजन के सहकर्मियों ने उन्हें एक कर्तव्यनिष्ठ और शांत स्वभाव का अधिकारी बताया जो हमेशा सादगी से काम करते थे।
