ICE & STEEL CYCLING EXPEDITION SCALES WORLD’S
HIGHEST MOTORABLE PASS

Leh : 10 July 2024

The ‘ICE AND STEEL CYCLING EXPEDITION’ of the Indian Army which was flagged-off from the Daulat Beg Oldie on 01 July 2024, today conquered the Highest Motorable Pass in the World and is likely to set a new world record for scaling maximum number of motorable passes in a single stretch, covering so far approx 600 kms, over a period of ten days.

The expedition is being conducted as part of the celebrations of the Rajat Jayanti Mahotsav of the Kargil Vijay Diwas and aims to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Kargil War. The expedition also interacted with locals, tourists and school children enroute, to inspire them and spread the spirit of adventure. The expedition members laid wreath at Galwan and Rezang La War Memorials, as on ode to the martyrs who laid down their lives defending these sectors.

During its journey, the expedition will scale six passes above 15000ft including the World’s Highest Motorable Pass Umling La. The expedition has already pedalled through the toughest dirt tracts of Chushul plains & Indus River valley.

The sense of achievement could be seen in the eyes of the cyclists, who in the last few days have cycled through the most rugged terrain & inclement weather, battling the effects of high altitude and reduced oxygen in the atmosphere. The expedition will now undertake its final stretch of the journey, to the banks of the picturesque Tso Moriri Lake.
