ICGS Adamya Commissioned at Paradip: A Major Boost to India’s Indigenous Shipbuilding and Coastal Security

The eastern seaboard of India gained a formidable addition to its maritime security architecture today as the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Adamya, the first of the eight Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), was formally commissioned at Paradip Port, Odisha. The commissioning marks not only a milestone for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) but also a resounding endorsement of India’s vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Commissioned by Shri Satyajit Mohanty, Joint Secretary (AF & Policy), Ministry of Defence, in the august presence of Inspector General Yoginder Dhaka, Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Seaboard, along with senior dignitaries from the central and state governments, the event highlighted the synergy between indigenous industrial capability and India’s maritime security requirements.
A Symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat
Designed and built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), ICGS Adamya is a 51-metre-long, 320-ton displacement Fast Patrol Vessel equipped with cutting-edge features and more than 60% indigenous content. Its commissioning reflects the Indian government’s policy thrust to build modern, capable warships domestically while reducing reliance on imports.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Shri Mohanty noted, “ICGS Adamya is not merely a vessel, but a manifestation of India’s determination to secure its maritime frontiers through indigenous innovation and engineering. It stands as a tribute to the capabilities of our shipbuilding industry, and as a commitment to the men and women who safeguard our seas.”
Name and Motto: Indomitable Spirit
The name Adamya, meaning “indomitable”, has been chosen to signify the unwavering spirit and determination of the Indian Coast Guard in ensuring safe, secure, and clean seas. The ship will operate under the administrative and operational control of Commander, ICG Region (North East) through Commander, ICG District Headquarters No. 7 (Odisha). Based at Paradip, Adamya will play a vital role in surveillance, interdiction, and rescue operations across India’s Eastern seaboard.
Manned by five officers and 34 personnel, the vessel is tasked with fulfilling a wide spectrum of missions as outlined in the ICG charter. These include surveillance of India’s vast maritime zones, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations, environmental protection duties, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), as well as responding to search and rescue (SAR) missions in the Bay of Bengal.
Technical Specifications and Capabilities
ICGS Adamya is propelled by two powerful 3000 KW diesel engines, allowing the ship to attain a maximum speed of 28 knots. With an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles at economical speed, the vessel can remain on extended patrols, strengthening India’s ability to maintain constant vigil in sensitive maritime zones.
The ship is the first Coast Guard vessel to be equipped with indigenously developed Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs) and gearboxes, designed to deliver superior manoeuvrability, enhanced performance, and greater operational flexibility at sea. This breakthrough is expected to serve as a benchmark for future indigenous ship designs.
The vessel’s state-of-the-art weaponry includes:
- A 30 mm CRN 91 gun as the main armament,
- Two 12.7 mm stabilized remote-controlled machine guns, and
- Advanced fire control systems to ensure precision in combat operations.
To augment operational efficiency, the ship is also fitted with an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and Automated Power Management System (APMS). Together, these systems enhance automation, reduce crew workload, and increase mission effectiveness.
Role in Safeguarding the Eastern Seaboard
Paradip Port, situated along the Bay of Bengal, is one of India’s busiest maritime hubs, handling critical energy, trade, and cargo traffic. With the induction of ICGS Adamya, the Indian Coast Guard strengthens its ability to monitor and secure these waters against potential threats ranging from maritime terrorism and smuggling to illegal fishing and environmental hazards.
Inspector General Yoginder Dhaka, speaking on the occasion, emphasized, “ICGS Adamya is not just a ship, but a sentinel of the seas. It symbolizes the Coast Guard’s preparedness to respond to every challenge, whether in the form of security threats, humanitarian crises, or environmental concerns. Its induction will greatly strengthen our operational readiness in the eastern maritime theatre.”
Goa Shipyard’s Role and Indigenous Innovation
The Adamya-class FPVs represent a new chapter in India’s indigenous shipbuilding story. Goa Shipyard Limited, with decades of expertise in naval and coast guard vessel construction, has once again demonstrated its ability to deliver modern platforms designed to meet operational demands.
The Adamya-class ships integrate indigenous subsystems ranging from propulsion units and gearboxes to fire-control systems and communications equipment, reflecting India’s growing industrial base. Over 60% indigenous content ensures not only reduced costs but also greater self-sufficiency in maintenance and lifecycle support.
Strategic Importance
India’s coastline stretches more than 7,500 kilometres, with an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of over 2.3 million square kilometres. The Bay of Bengal, in particular, has emerged as a critical maritime arena due to the increasing presence of extra-regional powers, piracy concerns, illegal trawling, and environmental vulnerabilities such as cyclones.
In this backdrop, the induction of Adamya significantly boosts India’s capability to enforce maritime law and protect national interests. The vessel’s rapid-response ability ensures that India can react to emergencies swiftly, enhancing both deterrence and security preparedness.
Looking Ahead
ICGS Adamya is the first in a series of eight Adamya-class FPVs, with subsequent ships expected to join the fleet in the coming years. Collectively, the class will form the backbone of India’s next-generation patrol capability, extending the Coast Guard’s operational footprint across critical maritime zones.
For the officers and crew of Adamya, the commissioning marks not just the start of a new operational chapter, but also a responsibility to live up to the spirit embodied by the vessel’s name – indomitable.
As the tricolour was hoisted and the ship formally inducted into service, the ceremony at Paradip Port symbolized more than just the addition of another warship. It was a moment that celebrated India’s march toward self-reliance, the unbreakable resolve of its maritime sentinels, and the promise of a secure and prosperous future along its seas.
पारादीप पोर्ट पर आईसीजीएस अद्म्य का कमीशन: आत्मनिर्भर भारत की उपलब्धि और तटीय सुरक्षा में बड़ा कदम

भारत के पूर्वी समुद्री तट को आज एक नई और सशक्त सुरक्षा क्षमता प्राप्त हुई, जब भारतीय तटरक्षक बल (ICG) का जहाज़ आईसीजीएस अद्म्य औपचारिक रूप से पारादीप पोर्ट, ओडिशा में कमीशन किया गया। आठ जहाज़ों की श्रृंखला में यह पहला अद्म्य-वर्ग का फास्ट पैट्रोल वेसल (FPV) है, जो भारतीय तटरक्षक की सामरिक शक्ति और भारत की आत्मनिर्भर रक्षा निर्माण क्षमता दोनों को नया आयाम देता है।
यह जहाज़ रक्षा मंत्रालय के संयुक्त सचिव (एएफ एंड पॉलिसी) श्री सत्यजीत मोहंती द्वारा कमीशन किया गया। इस अवसर पर पूर्वी समुद्री क्षेत्र मुख्यालय के चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ, इंस्पेक्टर जनरल योगेन्द्र ढाका तथा केंद्र और राज्य सरकार के कई वरिष्ठ अधिकारी मौजूद रहे। समारोह ने इस तथ्य को रेखांकित किया कि भारतीय औद्योगिक क्षमता और समुद्री सुरक्षा की जरूरतें अब आत्मनिर्भरता की राह पर मजबूती से जुड़ चुकी हैं।
आत्मनिर्भर भारत का प्रतीक
गोवा शिपयार्ड लिमिटेड (GSL) द्वारा स्वदेशी तकनीक से डिजाइन और निर्मित 51 मीटर लंबा यह फास्ट पैट्रोल वेसल लगभग 320 टन विस्थापन वाला है और इसमें 60% से अधिक स्वदेशी सामग्री का उपयोग किया गया है। यह जहाज़ प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के आत्मनिर्भर भारत दृष्टिकोण का वास्तविक प्रतीक है।
श्री मोहंती ने अपने संबोधन में कहा – “आईसीजीएस अद्म्य केवल एक जहाज़ नहीं है, बल्कि यह भारत की इस दृढ़ इच्छा का प्रतीक है कि वह अपनी समुद्री सीमाओं की रक्षा स्वदेशी नवाचार और तकनीक से करेगा। यह जहाज़ हमारे शिपबिल्डिंग उद्योग की क्षमता और हमारे समुद्री प्रहरी जवानों के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता का प्रतीक है।”
अद्म्य: अटूट जज़्बे का नाम
‘अद्म्य’ का अर्थ है ‘अजेय’ या ‘अटूट’, और यह नाम भारतीय तटरक्षक बल की उस अडिग भावना को दर्शाता है जिसके तहत वह सुरक्षित, स्वच्छ और संरक्षित समुद्र सुनिश्चित करने के लिए कार्यरत है। यह जहाज़ कमांडर, आईसीजी रीजन (नॉर्थ ईस्ट) के प्रशासनिक और परिचालन नियंत्रण में रहेगा तथा आईसीजी जिला मुख्यालय संख्या 7 (ओडिशा) के अधीन कार्य करेगा।
पारादीप में आधारित अद्म्य का दायित्व भारत के समुद्री क्षेत्रों की निगरानी, तस्करी और अवैध मछली पकड़ने की रोकथाम, समुद्री पर्यावरण की सुरक्षा, आपदा राहत और खोज एवं बचाव अभियानों (SAR) जैसी बहुआयामी जिम्मेदारियाँ निभाना होगा। इस जहाज़ पर 5 अधिकारी और 34 जवानों का दल तैनात रहेगा।
तकनीकी खूबियाँ और क्षमता
आईसीजीएस अद्म्य में दो 3000 किलोवाट डीज़ल इंजन लगे हैं, जो इसे 28 नॉट्स की अधिकतम गति प्रदान करते हैं। यह जहाज़ 1500 नॉटिकल मील की रेंज रखता है, जिससे यह लंबे समय तक समुद्र में गश्त कर सकता है।
यह जहाज़ भारतीय तटरक्षक का पहला ऐसा पोत है जिसमें स्वदेशी विकसित कंट्रोलबल पिच प्रोपेलर (CPP) और गियरबॉक्स लगाए गए हैं। इससे समुद्र में जहाज़ की मैन्युवरिंग क्षमता, प्रदर्शन और परिचालन लचीलापन काफी बढ़ जाता है।
इसके हथियारों में शामिल हैं:
- एक 30 मिमी सीआरएन-91 गन,
- दो 12.7 मिमी स्थिरीकृत रिमोट-कंट्रोल मशीन गन,
- उन्नत फायर कंट्रोल सिस्टम।
इसके अतिरिक्त जहाज़ में इंटीग्रेटेड ब्रिज सिस्टम (IBS), इंटीग्रेटेड प्लेटफॉर्म मैनेजमेंट सिस्टम (IPMS) और ऑटोमेटेड पावर मैनेजमेंट सिस्टम (APMS) लगाए गए हैं, जो संचालन क्षमता और स्वचालन को और अधिक मज़बूत बनाते हैं।
पूर्वी तट की सुरक्षा में अहम भूमिका
पारादीप पोर्ट, जो भारत के सबसे व्यस्त बंदरगाहों में से एक है, ऊर्जा, व्यापार और माल ढुलाई का एक प्रमुख केंद्र है। अद्म्य की तैनाती से भारतीय तटरक्षक बल को इस क्षेत्र की निगरानी और सुरक्षा में नई शक्ति मिलेगी। यह जहाज़ समुद्री आतंकवाद, तस्करी, अवैध मछली पकड़ने और पर्यावरणीय खतरों से निपटने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाएगा।
इंस्पेक्टर जनरल योगेन्द्र ढाका ने कहा – “आईसीजीएस अद्म्य केवल एक जहाज़ नहीं है, बल्कि समुद्र का प्रहरी है। यह तटरक्षक की तैयारी और दृढ़ता का प्रतीक है। इससे हमारी पूर्वी समुद्री क्षेत्र में परिचालन क्षमता कई गुना बढ़ जाएगी।”
गोवा शिपयार्ड की उपलब्धि
अद्म्य-वर्ग के जहाज़ भारत के स्वदेशी जहाज़ निर्माण इतिहास का नया अध्याय हैं। गोवा शिपयार्ड लिमिटेड ने अपने दशकों के अनुभव के साथ एक आधुनिक पोत प्रदान किया है जो सभी परिचालन आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करता है।
इन जहाज़ों में प्रणोदन इकाई, गियरबॉक्स, फायर कंट्रोल सिस्टम और संचार उपकरण जैसे कई उप-प्रणालियाँ स्वदेशी रूप से विकसित की गई हैं। 60% से अधिक स्वदेशी सामग्री का उपयोग इस परियोजना को किफायती और आत्मनिर्भर दोनों बनाता है।
सामरिक महत्व
भारत का तटीय क्षेत्र 7500 किलोमीटर से अधिक लंबा है और इसका विशेष आर्थिक क्षेत्र (EEZ) 23 लाख वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैला हुआ है। खासकर बंगाल की खाड़ी का सामरिक महत्व लगातार बढ़ रहा है। यहाँ पर न केवल बाहरी शक्तियों की मौजूदगी बढ़ी है बल्कि अवैध मछली पकड़ने, समुद्री अपराध और चक्रवात जैसे प्राकृतिक खतरों की चुनौती भी मौजूद है।
ऐसे समय में अद्म्य जैसे तेज़ गश्ती पोत भारत की समुद्री सुरक्षा को और मज़बूत बनाते हैं और आपात स्थितियों में तुरंत प्रतिक्रिया देने की क्षमता को सुनिश्चित करते हैं।
आगे की राह
अद्म्य आठ पोतों की श्रृंखला का पहला जहाज़ है। आने वाले वर्षों में बाकी पोत भी तटरक्षक बल में शामिल होंगे और सामूहिक रूप से भारत की गश्ती क्षमता की रीढ़ बनेंगे।
जैसे ही पारादीप पोर्ट पर तिरंगा लहराया गया और अद्म्य को आधिकारिक रूप से सेवा में शामिल किया गया, यह केवल एक नए जहाज़ का कमीशन नहीं था, बल्कि भारत की आत्मनिर्भरता की दिशा में प्रगति, समुद्री प्रहरियों की अटूट भावना और सुरक्षित समुद्री भविष्य का संकल्प था।
