Indian Army Leads Massive Flood Relief Operations Across Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Pathankot & Gurdaspur – Bailey Bridge Restores Critical Connectivity in Record Time
Jammu, August 30 – In the wake of torrential rains that triggered flash floods and caused widespread destruction across Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Pathankot and Gurdaspur, the Indian Army has once again proven its unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of citizens. Under the command of Maj Gen Mukesh Bhanwala, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Tiger Division, Rising Star Corps launched immediate large-scale rescue and relief operations, saving hundreds of lives while simultaneously restoring critical infrastructure.
Since 26 August, troops of Rising Star Corps have been relentlessly battling floodwaters and hostile weather conditions. Multiple Army rescue columns, supported by both Army and Indian Air Force helicopters, were deployed at short notice to ensure no civilian remained stranded in the affected regions. Braving strong currents and submerged areas, soldiers rescued nearly 1,000 people, including children, students, women, and paramilitary personnel who were trapped in inundated villages and towns.
The scale of operations went beyond mere evacuation. In parallel, Army teams extended medical support, distributed food packets, and provided relief materials to families left homeless or isolated by the deluge. Engineers and communication specialists swiftly acted to ensure that critical links were maintained – most importantly, alternative Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) lines were laid in record time to restore connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar, preventing a communication blackout in a strategically vital region.
One of the most significant challenges was the severe damage to the eastern portion of Tawi Bridge No. 4, a lifeline connecting Jammu with surrounding areas. With civil repair work expected to take considerable time, engineers of the Tiger Division stepped in. Demonstrating remarkable speed, skill, and grit, they constructed a 110-feet Bailey bridge under adverse conditions. Despite washed-out approaches and minimal workspace, the task was accomplished in under 12 hours, restoring vehicular movement on a critical artery.
Maj Gen Mukesh Bhanwalla highlighted the role of synergy between the armed forces and the administration, stating that the Indian Army’s response was conducted “in close coordination with civil administration and multiple agencies.” He further confirmed that additional Army resources remain on standby, prepared to face any new contingencies that may arise as rain-affected areas begin recovery.
The operation stands as a reminder of the Army’s humanitarian role in addition to its primary defence duties. From mountain warfare to flood relief, the Indian soldier remains the first responder in crisis, embodying the Army’s ethos of Seva Parmo Dharma (Service Before Self).

जम्मू, सांबा, कठुआ, पठानकोट और गुरदासपुर में बाढ़ राहत अभियान का नेतृत्व कर रही भारतीय सेना – टाइगर डिवीजन ने 12 घंटे में 110 फीट बेली ब्रिज बनाकर बहाल की जीवनरेखा
जम्मू, 30 अगस्त – हाल ही में हुई भारी बारिश और बाढ़ से जम्मू, सांबा, कठुआ, पठानकोट और गुरदासपुर में भारी तबाही मच गई। सड़कें, पुल और बुनियादी ढांचा बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ। ऐसे कठिन समय में भारतीय सेना ने एक बार फिर अपनी तत्परता और मानवीय जिम्मेदारी का परिचय दिया। मेजर जनरल मुकेश भानवाला, जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग (जीओसी) टाइगर डिवीजन के नेतृत्व में राइजिंग स्टार कॉर्प्स ने तुरंत बड़े स्तर पर बचाव और राहत कार्य शुरू कर दिए।
26 अगस्त से सेना के जवान लगातार बाढ़ग्रस्त इलाकों में डटे हुए हैं। तेज धारा और खराब मौसम का सामना करते हुए, राइजिंग स्टार कॉर्प्स की कई रेस्क्यू कॉलम्स और सेना-एयरफोर्स के हेलीकॉप्टर लोगों की जान बचाने में जुटे रहे। अब तक लगभग 1,000 लोगों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला गया, जिनमें बच्चे, विद्यार्थी, महिलाएं और अर्धसैनिक बलों के जवान भी शामिल हैं।
सेना ने सिर्फ लोगों को सुरक्षित स्थानों पर पहुंचाने तक ही सीमित नहीं रखा, बल्कि प्रभावित परिवारों को तत्काल चिकित्सा सहायता, भोजन व राहत सामग्री भी उपलब्ध कराई। सबसे अहम काम संचार बहाली का रहा, जिसमें सेना ने रिकॉर्ड समय में जम्मू-श्रीनगर के बीच वैकल्पिक फाइबर लाइन (OFC) बिछाकर संचार संपर्क बहाल किया और रणनीतिक रूप से अहम क्षेत्र में सूचना का प्रवाह बनाए रखा।
सबसे बड़ी चुनौती सामने आई जब तवी पुल नंबर-4 का पूर्वी हिस्सा बुरी तरह क्षतिग्रस्त हो गया। यह पुल जम्मू की जीवनरेखा है और इसके टूटने से वाहनों की आवाजाही पूरी तरह बाधित हो गई। ऐसे हालात में टाइगर डिवीजन के इंजीनियरों ने 110 फीट का बेली ब्रिज सिर्फ 12 घंटे के अंदर खड़ा कर दिया, जबकि रास्ते धुल चुके थे और कार्यस्थल बेहद सीमित था। इस पुल के बन जाने से वाहनों की आवाजाही तुरंत शुरू हो गई।
मेजर जनरल भानवाला ने कहा कि सेना का यह प्रयास नागरिक प्रशासन और सभी एजेंसियों के साथ मिलकर किया गया है। उन्होंने भरोसा दिलाया कि सेना के अतिरिक्त संसाधन अलर्ट पर हैं और किसी भी नई चुनौती का तुरंत सामना किया जाएगा।
यह ऑपरेशन एक बार फिर साबित करता है कि भारतीय सेना सिर्फ युद्धक्षेत्र तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि जब भी देशवासियों पर कोई आपदा आती है, वह सबसे पहले मदद के लिए सामने खड़ी रहती है। यह सेना की सेवा परमो धर्म की भावना का जीवंत उदाहरण है।
