In a powerful demonstration of India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and regional solidarity, the Indian Army’s elite 60 Parachute Field Hospital has been formally honoured by the Sri Lanka Army for its extraordinary lifesaving efforts during the aftermath of the devastating Ditwah Cyclone. The recognition ceremony held at Panagoda Army Cantonment stood as a tribute not just to military professionalism, but to compassion, courage, and the unwavering spirit of service that transcends national boundaries. The mission reaffirmed India’s role as a first responder in the Indian Ocean Region and a dependable partner in times of crisis.
Cyclone Ditwah’s Trail of Destruction and the Call for Immediate Action
Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka with ferocious intensity, leaving vast swathes of the island nation battered, isolated, and medically vulnerable. The eastern and central regions, particularly Mahiyanganaya in Uva Province, witnessed severe destruction of infrastructure, displacement of communities, outbreaks of injuries, and the looming threat of public health emergencies. With local healthcare systems stretched beyond capacity, the need for rapid international medical assistance became critical. Responding without delay, India activated its humanitarian response mechanisms, placing the Indian Army’s airborne medical assets on immediate standby.
Rapid Deployment of the 60 Parachute Field Hospital
Between December 2 and December 12, an 85-member medical contingent from the Indian Army Medical Services (IAMS), led by Lieutenant Colonel Jagneet Gill, deployed to the cyclone-affected zones under extremely challenging field conditions. The 60 Parachute Field Hospital, known for its capability to operate in austere and hostile environments, swiftly established fully functional medical facilities in disaster-hit areas. Despite damaged roads, disrupted supply lines, and limited infrastructure, the team demonstrated remarkable adaptability, speed, and operational efficiency.
Lifesaving Care for Over 7,000 Civilians Under Harsh Conditions
Over the course of ten intense days, the Indian Army medical team provided comprehensive medical, surgical, and dental care to more than 7,000 civilians. Their work encompassed emergency trauma management, treatment of cyclone-related injuries, maternal and child healthcare, infection control, dental procedures, and preventive medicine. Public health interventions were also undertaken to prevent outbreaks of waterborne and communicable diseases in overcrowded relief camps. The scale and effectiveness of care delivered under field conditions reflected the highest standards of military medical professionalism.

Beyond statistics, the mission was defined by human stories—children receiving urgent treatment, elderly patients regaining access to care, and families reassured by the presence of skilled professionals who had travelled across borders solely to help. Among the distinguished members of the contingent was Lieutenant Colonel Dwipannita Kalita, an officer whose presence carried profound symbolic significance. Hailing from Assam’s elite Parachute Medical Regiment, she had already made history in 2023 by becoming the first woman paratrooper from the state. Her role in the Sri Lanka mission further highlighted the Indian Army’s evolving ethos of inclusivity, operational excellence, and leadership by example. Her service during the cyclone relief operation stood as an inspiration to young officers and aspiring women leaders across the region.
Sri Lanka Army’s Formal Recognition and Gesture of Gratitude
In a solemn and dignified ceremony at Panagoda Army Cantonment, Major General D.K.S.K. Dolage USP nps psc, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, presented an official Letter of Appreciation issued by Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army. The letter lauded the Indian Army’s professionalism, speed of response, and humanitarian commitment. A token of appreciation was also handed over, symbolising the deep gratitude of the Sri Lankan people and armed forces for India’s timely assistance.
Reinforcing India–Sri Lanka Military Friendship and Trust
In a reciprocal gesture, the Indian Army contingent expressed heartfelt thanks to the Sri Lanka Army for its cooperation, logistical support, and camaraderie during the mission. The exchange underscored the enduring bonds of friendship between the two militaries, built on decades of trust, shared training, and mutual respect. The cyclone relief operation further strengthened defence diplomacy, showcasing how military-to-military cooperation can deliver tangible benefits to civilian populations during disasters.
A Shared Vision for Future Joint Disaster Response Operations
The ceremony also highlighted a shared commitment by India and Sri Lanka to deepen cooperation in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. As climate-induced disasters become more frequent and severe in the region, both armies reiterated the importance of joint preparedness, interoperability, and rapid response mechanisms. The success of the Ditwah Cyclone relief mission stands as a blueprint for future collaborative efforts aimed at saving lives and stabilising affected communities.

डिटवाह चक्रवात ने श्रीलंका के कई हिस्सों में भारी तबाही मचाई। विशेष रूप से उवा प्रांत के महियंगनाया क्षेत्र में जनजीवन पूरी तरह अस्त-व्यस्त हो गया। मकान ढह गए, सड़कें और संचार व्यवस्था ध्वस्त हो गई, और स्थानीय स्वास्थ्य ढांचा बुरी तरह चरमरा गया। घायल नागरिकों, बीमार बुजुर्गों, गर्भवती महिलाओं और बच्चों के लिए तत्काल चिकित्सा सहायता एक गंभीर चुनौती बन गई। ऐसे कठिन समय में भारत ने बिना किसी देरी के मानवीय सहायता के लिए अपने सैन्य संसाधन सक्रिय किए।
60 पैराशूट फील्ड हॉस्पिटल की त्वरित तैनाती
2 दिसंबर से 12 दिसंबर 2025 के बीच भारतीय सेना चिकित्सा सेवा (IAMS) की 85 सदस्यीय टीम, लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल जगनीत गिल के नेतृत्व में श्रीलंका पहुंची। यह टीम कठिन भौगोलिक परिस्थितियों, सीमित संसाधनों और आपदा-ग्रस्त वातावरण के बावजूद अत्याधुनिक फील्ड मेडिकल सुविधाएं स्थापित करने में सफल रही। 60 पैराशूट फील्ड हॉस्पिटल की यह तैनाती भारतीय सेना की त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया क्षमता और वैश्विक मानवीय दायित्वों के प्रति उसकी प्रतिबद्धता को दर्शाती है।
7,000 से अधिक नागरिकों को जीवनरक्षक चिकित्सा सहायता
इस राहत अभियान के दौरान भारतीय सेना की मेडिकल टीम ने 7,000 से अधिक नागरिकों को व्यापक चिकित्सा, शल्य चिकित्सा और दंत चिकित्सा सेवाएं प्रदान कीं। इसमें गंभीर चोटों का इलाज, संक्रमण नियंत्रण, मातृ एवं शिशु स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं, दवाओं का वितरण और सार्वजनिक स्वास्थ्य उपाय शामिल थे। जलजनित और संक्रामक रोगों के संभावित प्रकोप को रोकने के लिए विशेष सतर्कता बरती गई। यह सब ऐसे हालात में किया गया, जहां बिजली, सड़क और संचार सुविधाएं बेहद सीमित थीं।
कठिन परिस्थितियों में भी पेशेवर दक्षता और मानवीय संवेदना
भारतीय सेना के डॉक्टरों, नर्सों और पैरामेडिक्स ने दिन-रात काम करते हुए यह साबित किया कि सैन्य वर्दी केवल युद्ध के लिए नहीं, बल्कि मानवता की रक्षा के लिए भी होती है। अस्थायी शिविरों और सीमित संसाधनों के बावजूद, टीम ने अनुशासन, करुणा और समर्पण का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण प्रस्तुत किया। स्थानीय नागरिकों के लिए भारतीय सैनिक केवल डॉक्टर नहीं, बल्कि संकट के समय भरोसे की सबसे बड़ी उम्मीद बनकर सामने आए।

इस मिशन का एक विशेष और ऐतिहासिक पहलू लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल द्विपन्निता कलिता की उपस्थिति रही। असम की पैराशूट मेडिकल रेजिमेंट से जुड़ी लेफ्टिनेंट कर्नल कलिता ने 2023 में असम की पहली महिला पैराट्रूपर बनकर इतिहास रचा था। श्रीलंका में राहत अभियान के दौरान उनकी भूमिका ने भारतीय सेना में महिलाओं की बढ़ती नेतृत्व क्षमता और साहस को सशक्त रूप से उजागर किया। उनका योगदान न केवल सैन्य क्षेत्र में, बल्कि सामाजिक स्तर पर भी प्रेरणास्रोत बना।
श्रीलंका सेना द्वारा औपचारिक सम्मान और आभार
पनागोडा आर्मी कैंटोनमेंट में आयोजित एक गरिमामय समारोह में मेजर जनरल डी.के.एस.के. डोलाजे USP nps psc, चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ, श्रीलंका आर्मी ने भारतीय दल को सम्मानित किया। उन्होंने लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल लसांथा रोड्रिगो RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, श्रीलंका सेना प्रमुख की ओर से प्रशंसा पत्र और स्मृति चिन्ह प्रदान किया। इस पत्र में भारतीय सेना की पेशेवर दक्षता, त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया और मानवीय योगदान की विशेष सराहना की गई।
भारत–श्रीलंका सैन्य मित्रता का सशक्त प्रतीक
