INS Sahyadri’s Strategic Port Call in Malaysia: Strengthening India’s Maritime Footprint in the Indo-Pacific
Kemaman, Malaysia – The Indian Navy’s indigenously designed and constructed stealth frigate, INS Sahyadri, made a significant port call at Kemaman, Malaysia, as part of her ongoing Eastern Fleet Operational Deployment to the South China Sea and the broader Indo-Pacific region. The visit, which commenced on 02 October 2025, marked yet another milestone in India’s growing maritime engagement with Southeast Asia and its reaffirmed commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and cooperative security across the Indo-Pacific theatre.
Upon arrival, the ship and its crew were accorded a ceremonial welcome by the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), symbolising the deep-rooted cultural affinity and mutual respect between the maritime forces of India and Malaysia. The visit, which spanned three days, blended operational objectives with diplomacy, cultural outreach, and people-to-people exchanges, truly embodying the spirit of “Sail for Friendship, Sail for Peace.”
A Symbol of Indigenous Maritime Strength – INS Sahyadri
INS Sahyadri (F49) is the third ship of the Shivalik-class Guided Missile Stealth Frigates, designed and built entirely in India by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, and commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2012. The ship stands as a shining example of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, representing a self-reliant defence ecosystem that has steadily matured to produce technologically advanced frontline warships.
Equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, Sahyadri is capable of undertaking multi-dimensional combat operations — from anti-air and anti-submarine warfare to surface dominance missions — across extended maritime frontiers. Over the years, she has participated in multiple bilateral and multilateral naval exercises, projecting India’s maritime power and contributing to international efforts for secure seas.
A Continuum of Naval Friendship – India and Malaysia at Sea
INS Sahyadri’s visit to Malaysia is not her first. The ship had earlier visited Port Klang on a goodwill mission in 2016, and later took part in Exercise Samudra Laksamana at Kota Kinabalu in 2019. These recurring engagements highlight the enduring and evolving naval cooperation between India and Malaysia, shaped by shared maritime values and mutual strategic interests.
This 2025 visit to Kemaman Port marks the third occasion of Sahyadri’s presence in Malaysian waters, reaffirming India’s intent to sustain operational visibility and constructive engagement in the ASEAN maritime sphere.
Strengthening Maritime Interoperability and Strategic Partnership
During the port call, the Commanding Officer of INS Sahyadri paid courtesy visits to senior RMN officials, including a formal call on First Admiral Abd Halim bin Kamarudin, Deputy Commander of Naval Region, Malaysia. The discussions covered a wide spectrum of cooperation areas such as information sharing, coordinated patrols, training exchanges, and joint maritime domain awareness initiatives.
The visit featured a series of professional interactions, including cross-deck visits, joint training sessions, technical briefings, and sporting events between the personnel of both navies. These engagements serve as an essential bridge for operational understanding and tactical interoperability, ensuring that both sides can operate seamlessly in any future collaborative mission scenario.
Beyond military synergy, the visit also had a humanitarian and cultural dimension. The crew of INS Sahyadri conducted a Yoga session and a charity outreach program, reflecting the Indian Navy’s ethos of compassion, discipline, and diplomacy. These events were received warmly by the local community, symbolising the soft power that underpins India’s maritime outreach.
The Indo-Pacific Connection – A Region of Shared Prosperity
The South China Sea and Indo-Pacific region are not just strategic spaces for India—they represent the confluence of global trade, energy routes, and maritime partnerships. India’s sustained naval presence in the region underlines its role as a responsible maritime stakeholder and preferred security partner committed to a rules-based maritime order.
The ongoing operational deployment of INS Sahyadri, under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command (Visakhapatnam), reaffirms India’s resolve to work closely with regional partners like Malaysia in addressing common security challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and disaster relief.
The deployment also aligns with India’s broader regional vision under the “Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)” and the MAHASAGAR initiative, both of which promote peace, prosperity, and shared growth across the Indo-Pacific maritime community.
On the Malaysian side, the nation’s adherence to the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP) resonates with India’s policy framework, creating a synergy that emphasizes inclusivity, transparency, and freedom of navigation in international waters.
A Rich Maritime Legacy Reinforced by Modern Diplomacy
India and Malaysia’s maritime relationship dates back centuries, shaped by ancient trade routes, cultural exchanges, and shared traditions across the Bay of Bengal and the Strait of Malacca. The modern naval partnership is a natural extension of these historical linkages, now underpinned by strategic alignment and regional cooperation.
Over the years, both navies have enhanced their collaboration through LIMA (Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition), MALABAR, and MILAN exercises, and bilateral Field Training Exercises (FTX). The successful conclusion of the third edition of FTX Samudra Laksamana in 2024 was a key milestone, underscoring both nations’ dedication to bolstering regional maritime security and operational cooperation.
INS Sahyadri – A Floating Ambassador of Peace and Power
Beyond her operational excellence, INS Sahyadri has emerged as a floating ambassador of Indian diplomacy, combining hard power with human outreach. Each deployment is a reflection of India’s maritime philosophy — “Samudra Setu”, or “bridge through the seas.”
The ship’s presence in the Indo-Pacific underscores India’s proactive approach to fostering maritime partnerships that are not limited to defence cooperation, but also encompass cultural dialogue, capacity-building, and humanitarian collaboration.

INS Sahyadri’s port call at Kemaman is not just a naval exercise; it’s a reaffirmation of India’s strategic commitment to the Indo-Pacific’s peace and stability. मलेशिया के केमामन बंदरगाह पर भारतीय नौसेना का युद्धपोत आईएनएस सह्याद्री पहुंचा – हिन्द-प्रशांत में भारत की समुद्री शक्ति और कूटनीति का प्रदर्शन
केमामन, मलेशिया – भारतीय नौसेना का स्वदेशी रूप से निर्मित अत्याधुनिक स्टील्थ फ्रिगेट आईएनएस सह्याद्री (INS Sahyadri) मलेशिया के केमामन बंदरगाह पर अपने पूर्वी बेड़े की दक्षिण चीन सागर और हिन्द-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में तैनाती (Operational Deployment) के तहत पहुंचा। यह दौरा भारत और मलेशिया के बीच बढ़ते समुद्री सहयोग और हिन्द-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में शांति, स्थिरता और साझी सुरक्षा के प्रति भारत की प्रतिबद्धता को और सुदृढ़ करता है।
जहाज़ के पहुंचने पर रॉयल मलेशियन नेवी (Royal Malaysian Navy) द्वारा शानदार औपचारिक स्वागत किया गया। यह स्वागत न केवल दोनों देशों के बीच गहरी सांस्कृतिक विरासत और नौसैनिक परंपराओं का प्रतीक था, बल्कि यह उस बढ़ते सामरिक विश्वास का भी परिचायक है जो दोनों नौसेनाओं के बीच वर्षों से विकसित हुआ है।
यह तीन दिवसीय यात्रा सैन्य सहयोग, सांस्कृतिक आदान-प्रदान, और जन-से-जन कनेक्ट का सुंदर संगम रही — जो वास्तव में भारतीय नौसेना के मूल सिद्धांत “मैत्री के लिए नौकायन, शांति के लिए नौकायन” को चरितार्थ करती है।
स्वदेशी शक्ति का प्रतीक – आईएनएस सह्याद्री
आईएनएस सह्याद्री (F49) भारत में निर्मित शिवालिक क्लास गाइडेड मिसाइल स्टील्थ फ्रिगेट्स का तीसरा युद्धपोत है। इसे मुंबई स्थित मझगांव डॉक शिपबिल्डर्स लिमिटेड (MDL) द्वारा डिजाइन और निर्मित किया गया था तथा इसे साल 2012 में भारतीय नौसेना में कमीशन किया गया।
यह युद्धपोत भारत की ‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) पहल का जीवंत उदाहरण है और देश की बढ़ती नौसैनिक तकनीकी क्षमता का प्रमाण है।
यह अत्याधुनिक सेंसर, हथियार प्रणालियों और स्टील्थ तकनीक से सुसज्जित है, जो इसे हवा, सतह और पानी के भीतर सभी तरह के युद्ध अभियानों में सक्षम बनाती है। वर्षों से यह जहाज कई द्विपक्षीय और बहुपक्षीय अभ्यासों तथा अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुद्री अभियानों में हिस्सा लेकर भारत की समुद्री शक्ति का प्रतिनिधित्व कर चुका है।
भारत-मलेशिया की नौसैनिक मैत्री का सशक्त इतिहास
यह मलेशिया में आईएनएस सह्याद्री की तीसरी यात्रा है। इससे पहले यह जहाज़ 2016 में पोर्ट क्लांग पहुंचा था, जबकि 2019 में कोटा किनाबालू में आयोजित अभ्यास “समुद्र लक्ष्मणा (Samudra Laksamana)” में भाग लिया था।
इन यात्राओं ने भारत और मलेशिया के बीच विकसित हो रहे नौसैनिक संबंधों को नई दिशा दी है। केमामन की यह यात्रा भारत की आसियान (ASEAN) क्षेत्र में सक्रिय समुद्री उपस्थिति को और मजबूत करती है।
समुद्री सहयोग और रणनीतिक साझेदारी को नई दिशा
आईएनएस सह्याद्री के कमांडिंग ऑफिसर ने इस यात्रा के दौरान रॉयल मलेशियन नेवी के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों से शिष्टाचार भेंट की, जिनमें फर्स्ट एडमिरल अब्द हलीम बिन कमारुद्दीन, डिप्टी कमांडर नेवल रीजन, प्रमुख रहे।
इन बैठकों में सूचना आदान-प्रदान, प्रशिक्षण सहयोग, संयुक्त गश्त, और समुद्री सुरक्षा डोमेन अवेयरनेस जैसे विषयों पर चर्चा हुई।
यात्रा के दौरान दोनों नौसेनाओं के बीच क्रॉस डेक विज़िट्स, तकनीकी कार्यशालाएं, खेल प्रतियोगिताएं, प्रशिक्षण सत्र और सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए गए। ये सभी पहल नौसैनिक आपसी तालमेल और संचालनात्मक इंटरऑपरेबिलिटी को सुदृढ़ करने की दिशा में अहम साबित हुईं।
इसके साथ ही, भारतीय नौसेना के जवानों ने योग सत्र और एक चैरिटी कार्यक्रम का भी आयोजन किया, जो भारतीय नौसेना की “सेवा, सहानुभूति और सद्भाव” की भावना को प्रतिबिंबित करता है।
हिन्द-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में भारत की रणनीतिक भूमिका
दक्षिण चीन सागर और हिन्द-प्रशांत केवल रणनीतिक दृष्टि से ही नहीं, बल्कि आर्थिक और सांस्कृतिक दृष्टि से भी अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्र हैं। वैश्विक व्यापार और ऊर्जा मार्गों का केंद्र होने के कारण, यह क्षेत्र स्थिरता और स्वतंत्र नौवहन की आवश्यकता को दर्शाता है।
भारत का इस क्षेत्र में निरंतर नौसैनिक तैनाती कार्यक्रम उसके उत्तरदायी समुद्री साझेदार के रूप में भूमिका को रेखांकित करता है।
यह तैनाती भारत की “सागर” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) और “महासागर” (MAHASAGAR) नीति के अनुरूप है, जिनका उद्देश्य है – शांति, सुरक्षा और सामूहिक प्रगति।
वहीं, मलेशिया की नीति ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP) के अनुरूप है, जो भारत की दृष्टि से सामंजस्य रखती है। दोनों देशों का यह साझापन समुद्री क्षेत्र में पारदर्शिता, समावेशिता और समान अवसर को बढ़ावा देता है।

भारत और मलेशिया का समुद्री संबंध हजारों वर्षों पुराना है — जब व्यापारिक मार्गों और सांस्कृतिक आदान-प्रदान ने दोनों देशों को जोड़ रखा था। आधुनिक युग में यह रिश्ता रणनीतिक साझेदारी और सुरक्षा सहयोग में परिवर्तित हो चुका है।
