MYSTERIOUS BLAST NEAR RAILWAY TRACK IN RAJASTHAN’S SRI GANGANAGAR RAISES SECURITY ALARM; POLICE,ATS, INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES JOIN PROBE
Anupgarh / Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan: A suspected explosion near the Anupgarh–Suratgarh railway line in Rajasthan’s border district of Sri Ganganagar has triggered a major security alert, prompting the deployment of police, intelligence agencies, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). The incident occurred late Tuesday night near 50 GB village, raising concerns over a possible attempt to damage railway infrastructure.
According to preliminary information, the explosion took place at approximately 9:45 PM, nearly 45 minutes after a passenger train travelling from Anupgarh towards Suratgarh had passed through the area. The blast was reportedly powerful enough to be heard by residents living in nearby settlements, with its sound reaching locations nearly 200 metres away from the suspected explosion site.
The impact of the explosion reportedly damaged two concrete railway support structures installed beneath the tracks. The concrete structures were severely damaged, exposing their internal reinforcement steel. A crater approximately two feet deep was also reported between the railway tracks, indicating the possibility of a significant explosive impact. However, the exact nature, intensity and cause of the incident are yet to be established through forensic examination.
Residents of nearby dhanis reportedly rushed towards the railway tracks after hearing the loud explosion. Following information from local residents, police personnel and other officials reached the location at approximately 11 PM. The incident was subsequently treated as a serious security matter, considering the strategic importance of railway connectivity in Rajasthan’s border region.
According to Ram Pratap, Circle Inspector of Ramsinghpur, a passenger train had departed from Anupgarh Junction towards Suratgarh at around 8:30 PM and passed near 50 GB village at approximately 9 PM. The suspected explosion occurred around 45 minutes later. The timing of the incident has become an important aspect of the investigation, particularly because a passenger train had already crossed the affected section before the explosion.
As the investigation progressed, intelligence and security agencies joined the operation. Teams from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and CID reportedly reached the location at around 2 AM. Additional Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar of the ATS also arrived at approximately 2:15 AM to assess the situation and coordinate the investigation.
Sri Ganganagar Superintendent of Police Harishankar confirmed that the police were examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. He stated that it would be premature to conclusively describe the occurrence as an explosion or establish its precise nature before the forensic team completed its examination. The FSL team is expected to collect samples and other material evidence from the location to determine what caused the damage.
The police are also investigating whether the railway infrastructure was deliberately targeted. Investigators are expected to examine the damaged concrete structures, the surrounding ground, possible explosive residue and other physical evidence to establish the sequence of events.
As a precautionary measure, railway traffic on the affected section was suspended until 9 AM Wednesday. Train operations were cancelled or temporarily disrupted to facilitate inspection of the track and ensure passenger safety. Security personnel remained deployed at the location while the investigation and technical assessment continued.
The incident has attracted additional attention because of a significant recovery made by security agencies in the border region during October. In the Rawla Mandi area of Sri Ganganagar district, approximately 7.75 kilograms of suspected RDX, two Turkish-made Zigana pistols, four magazines, around 867 cartridges, five batteries and two remote-control devices were reportedly recovered.
According to the information available, the consignment was suspected to have been dropped through a drone originating from across the Pakistan border. The recovery had raised concerns about the possible use of cross-border drone networks for the transportation of weapons and explosives into Indian territory.
However, Sri Ganganagar SP Harishankar has clarified that no connection between the earlier recovery of explosives and the latest railway incident has been established so far. Investigators are examining the two matters separately, and any suggestion of a direct link would require supporting evidence.
The latest incident also brings back memories of previous attempts to sabotage railway infrastructure in Rajasthan. On January 19, 2026, an alleged attempt was made to derail the luxury Maharaja Express near Jaipur by placing iron angles on the railway track. The alertness of the locomotive pilot reportedly prevented a major accident.
Earlier, on April 7, 2026, an attempt to derail a goods train was reported in Chittorgarh district. A railway track section measuring approximately 17 feet had allegedly been placed on a bridge over the Orai River. The locomotive struck the obstruction, but the metal section was thrown away, preventing a possible derailment.
Another incident was reported on August 23, 2024, when a concrete block was allegedly placed on the railway track in Rajasthan’s Pali district. The Ahmedabad–Jodhpur Vande Bharat Express reportedly collided with the obstruction while travelling at night. The incident raised concerns about deliberate interference with railway operations.
Against this background, the suspected blast near 50 GB village has renewed concerns over the vulnerability of railway infrastructure in strategically sensitive border districts. Railway lines in these regions are important not only for civilian transportation but also for logistical connectivity and movement across western Rajasthan.
For now, investigators are focusing on forensic evidence, the exact nature of the damage and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Whether the explosion was a deliberate attempt to sabotage railway infrastructure or resulted from another cause remains under investigation.
The coming forensic findings and police investigation will be crucial in establishing what happened near the Anupgarh–Suratgarh railway line and whether any deliberate conspiracy was involved.
