‘Squid Games’ on City’s Footpaths: Journalists Use Satire to Highlight Bengaluru’s Crumbling Walkways
A creative protest gone viral: Badal Nanjundaswamy and journalists stage ‘Squid Games’-inspired skit to shame civic apathy
Bengaluru — In a city once hailed for its cosmopolitan charm and innovation, a group of journalists and an artist have turned to satire to draw attention to a pressing civic issue — the poor state of footpaths. On Thursday, an unconventional yet powerful protest took place near St John’s Medical College Hospital, Koramangala, where four journalists participated in a live skit inspired by the globally acclaimed Korean survival drama ‘Squid Games’.
Spearheaded by acclaimed visual artist Badal Nanjundaswamy — widely known for his unique street art that speaks to civic woes — the skit mocked the perils faced by pedestrians daily while walking on Bengaluru’s broken, encroached, and hazardous footpaths.
The entire performance was filmed and quickly garnered virality across social media platforms. The skit’s real-life undertone hit home when photojournalist Anantha Subramanyam K, in the middle of the act, tripped and fell while navigating a stretch of uneven pavement filled with silt and broken concrete. His fall, though unintentional, became a symbol of everyday struggle, sparking concern and outrage from netizens.
“Price of democracy,” say social media users
Many viewers called the performance both hilarious and haunting. “Funny to watch, but embarrassing overall, considering the helplessness of the common man. No accountability, no shame, no action — only slogans,” one user wrote.
Nanjundaswamy has previously made headlines for comparing Bengaluru roads to the lunar surface in a 2019 video, but this time, he partnered with journalists — Anusha Sood, Anantha Subramanyam K, and two others — to stage the social commentary live.
The artist’s call to conscience
In conversation with Metrolife, Anantha Subramanyam pointed to the very location where the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) had cleared a drain but left the removed silt dumped on the footpath, making it impassable. “This section has remained open for a month. It’s extremely risky for pedestrians, especially during peak hours,” he said.
Anusha Sood added that while the skit was well received, it was unfortunate that such gimmicks were necessary to attract government attention. “We’re always happy to assist authorities in finding solutions, but we shouldn’t have to perform skits to get them to do their job,” she said. She further appealed to two-wheeler riders to refrain from using footpaths.
BBMP responds, but trust deficit remains
Reacting to the incident, BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao claimed that the civic body was actively working to improve pedestrian safety. “We’ve tackled many encroachment issues and repaired broken footpaths with minimal cost. All zonal commissioners have been instructed to improve walkability in their areas. We’re also developing 150 km of footpaths in high-footfall zones,” he said.
Despite the BBMP’s assurances, the public remains skeptical. Social media continues to be flooded with images and testimonies of unsafe walkways, missing slabs, and encroached paths. The success of the video has opened the door for a deeper civic conversation, but whether it leads to lasting change is yet to be seen.

बेंगलुरु — देश की टेक्नोलॉजी राजधानी कहे जाने वाले बेंगलुरु में जहां एक ओर स्मार्ट सिटी के नाम पर करोड़ों खर्च हो रहे हैं, वहीं फुटपाथों की हालत ऐसी है कि आम नागरिकों की जान खतरे में है। इसी मुद्दे पर ध्यान आकर्षित करने के लिए एक कलाकार और चार पत्रकारों की टीम ने एक अलग ही तरीका अपनाया — ‘स्क्विड गेम्स’ थीम पर आधारित सड़क नाटक।
सेंट जॉन्स मेडिकल कॉलेज हॉस्पिटल, कोरमंगला के पास गुरुवार को आयोजित यह नुक्कड़ नाटक नागरिक मुद्दों को उजागर करने के लिए जाने जाने वाले कलाकार बादल नंजुंडास्वामी के नेतृत्व में हुआ। इस व्यंग्यात्मक प्रस्तुति में शहर के चार पत्रकारों ने हिस्सा लिया और टूटे फुटपाथों पर चलने की जोखिम को हास्य-व्यंग्य के माध्यम से दिखाया।
इस पूरे नाटक को रिकॉर्ड किया गया और अब यह वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर तेजी से वायरल हो रहा है। वीडियो में एक भावुक क्षण तब आया जब फोटो-जर्नलिस्ट अनंता सुब्रमण्यम के. चलते चलते अचानक असंतुलित होकर गिर पड़े। यह गिरना भले ही अनजाने में हुआ हो, लेकिन इसने फुटपाथ की खतरनाक स्थिति को सच्चाई से दिखा दिया।
“मजेदार मगर शर्मनाक” — सोशल मीडिया की तीखी प्रतिक्रिया
लोगों ने इस वीडियो को देखकर एक तरफ हंसी जताई, वहीं दूसरी तरफ गुस्सा भी प्रकट किया। एक यूजर ने लिखा, “देखने में तो मजेदार है, लेकिन हकीकत में बेहद शर्मनाक है। लोकतंत्र की कीमत चुकानी पड़ती है आम जनता को — ना कोई जवाबदेही, ना कोई शर्म, ना ही कोई कार्रवाई।”
बादल नंजुंडास्वामी पहले भी 2019 में बेंगलुरु की सड़कों को चंद्रमा की सतह जैसा दिखाते हुए एक वीडियो बना चुके हैं, जो काफी वायरल हुआ था। लेकिन इस बार उन्होंने पत्रकारों के साथ मिलकर ज़मीनी स्तर पर प्रत्यक्ष प्रस्तुति दी।
“हम अधिकारी की मदद को तैयार हैं, पर नाटक से ध्यान क्यों खींचना पड़े?”
अनंता सुब्रमण्यम ने Metrolife से बातचीत में बताया कि उस जगह पर बीबीएमपी द्वारा नाली से कीचड़ तो निकाला गया लेकिन उसे वहीं फुटपाथ पर छोड़ दिया गया, जिससे वहां चलना मुश्किल हो गया।
पत्रकार अनुषा सूद ने कहा, “हम हमेशा समाधान खोजने में प्रशासन की मदद को तैयार रहते हैं, लेकिन ये दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि अधिकारियों का ध्यान खींचने के लिए हमें ऐसे स्टंट करने पड़ते हैं।” उन्होंने दोपहिया चालकों से अपील की कि वे फुटपाथों का उपयोग न करें।
BBMP की प्रतिक्रिया — दावा और यथार्थ में दूरी
घटना पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए बीबीएमपी के मुख्य आयुक्त एम. महेश्वर राव ने कहा कि “हमने अतिक्रमण हटाया है और टूटे फुटपाथों की मरम्मत न्यूनतम लागत में की है। सभी ज़ोनल कमिश्नरों को उनके क्षेत्र में वॉकबिलिटी सुधारने के निर्देश दिए गए हैं। 150 किमी नए फुटपाथ बनाए जा रहे हैं।”
हालांकि बीबीएमपी के इन दावों पर जनता को भरोसा नहीं है। सोशल मीडिया पर लगातार शहर के खराब फुटपाथों की तस्वीरें और वीडियो पोस्ट किए जा रहे हैं। यह वीडियो इस बहस को और तेज कर गया है कि बेंगलुरु को वाकई एक ‘वॉक करने लायक शहर’ बनाना है या नहीं।
