Strengthening Cyber Preparedness: Ernst & Young’s Krishna Sastry Delivers Key Lecture on Information Security at CDM, Secunderabad

In a world where digital warfare has become as significant as traditional combat, the College of Defence Management (CDM) under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) continues to play a pioneering role in arming Indian Armed Forces officers with advanced insights into emerging threats. One such initiative unfolded recently when Mr Krishna Sastry Pendyala, Partner, Cyber Security Consulting at Ernst & Young LLP, India, delivered a highly informative and dynamic session on Information Security and Cyber Threats to the participants of the 21st Higher Defence Management Course (HDMC-21) and their spouses.
Held at CDM’s state-of-the-art lecture facilities in Secunderabad, the session brought together over 100 participants comprising senior military officers, their families, and members of the academic and cyber defence fraternity. Mr Pendyala, a widely respected expert in the domain of cyber security with decades of consulting experience, walked the audience through real-world case studies that have left lasting impacts on global cyber infrastructure.
Case Studies that Shocked the World
Mr Pendyala’s lecture opened with a gripping analysis of the Cosmos Bank cyber heist, an incident in which hackers siphoned off nearly ₹94 crore from ATMs across multiple countries by breaching the bank’s internal systems. He detailed how malware infiltration, poor segmentation of networks, and delayed response windows created an ideal opportunity for the attack.
He also deconstructed the SolarWinds cyber espionage campaign, which targeted U.S. federal agencies and global corporations by injecting malicious code into a trusted software update—a chilling example of how even supply chains can be weaponised.
Another key segment was dedicated to the Microsoft-CrowdStrike incident, in which vulnerabilities in identity and access protocols led to mass-scale breaches, reminding security professionals of the ever-evolving nature of cyber threats.
Theoretical Depth Meets Practical Learning
Mr Pendyala blended theoretical frameworks like the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) and risk assessment models with practical recommendations. He emphasized the importance of cyber hygiene, penetration testing, employee awareness programs, and zero trust architecture as critical elements in defending against both state-sponsored and independent threat actors.
He urged Indian defence institutions and national security apparatus to adopt adaptive cyber frameworks, invest in AI-driven threat intelligence platforms, and most crucially, build a culture of cyber awareness at every level of the organisation.
Family Inclusion: A Unique Approach to Defence Education
One of the distinguishing features of the session was the inclusion of spouses of the HDMC participants. “Cyber threats aren’t confined to just uniformed personnel. Today, entire families are exposed through digital banking, social media, and interconnected smart devices,” Mr Pendyala remarked. This holistic outreach is a testament to CDM’s inclusive approach in capacity building.
CDM’s Vision for Future Cyber Leadership
CDM, under IDS, has been focusing extensively on developing cyber defence modules within its leadership curriculum. With the changing nature of warfare, information dominance and digital resilience are becoming central tenets of national defence planning. Events like this lecture are part of CDM’s broader strategy to equip military leaders with digital acumen, ensuring India’s preparedness in the fifth domain of warfare — cyberspace.
In the concluding remarks, the commandant of CDM appreciated Mr Pendyala’s timely insights and reiterated the need for strategic partnerships with domain leaders like Ernst & Young. The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, followed by a vote of thanks and a felicitation ceremony.

जब युद्ध का मैदान अब केवल सीमा तक सीमित नहीं रह गया, और साइबर क्षेत्र रक्षा रणनीति का अभिन्न हिस्सा बन चुका है, ऐसे में कॉलेज ऑफ डिफेंस मैनेजमेंट (CDM), इंटीग्रेटेड डिफेंस स्टाफ के तत्वावधान में एक अहम कदम उठाया गया। Ernst & Young LLP, India के साइबर सुरक्षा सलाहकार कृष्ण शास्त्री पेंद्याला ने HDMC-21 के प्रतिभागियों एवं उनके परिजनों के लिए सूचना सुरक्षा (Information Security) पर एक विस्तृत और गहन व्याख्यान प्रस्तुत किया।
इस विशेष सत्र में 100 से अधिक रक्षा अधिकारियों, उनकी पत्नियों और CDM के शिक्षाविदों ने भाग लिया। पेंद्याला, जो कि भारत के अग्रणी साइबर विशेषज्ञों में से एक हैं, ने अपने अनुभवों को वास्तविक घटनाओं और केस स्टडीज के माध्यम से साझा किया।
साइबर हमलों के खतरनाक उदाहरण
व्याख्यान की शुरुआत कॉसमॉस बैंक साइबर हमले से हुई, जहां हैकर्स ने मलवेयर के माध्यम से बैंक सिस्टम में घुसपैठ कर ₹94 करोड़ से अधिक की राशि निकाल ली थी। इसके बाद SolarWinds साइबर जासूसी मामले पर प्रकाश डाला गया, जिसमें अमेरिकी सरकारी एजेंसियों और बड़ी कंपनियों को लक्षित किया गया था।
इसी प्रकार, Microsoft-CrowdStrike डेटा उल्लंघन का उदाहरण देकर यह बताया गया कि कैसे पहचान प्रणाली में खामियां भी बड़े पैमाने पर सुरक्षा को खतरे में डाल सकती हैं।
सैद्धांतिक और व्यावहारिक जानकारी का संगम
पेंद्याला ने जहां एक ओर ‘CIA ट्रायएड’ जैसी पारंपरिक साइबर सिद्धांतों की चर्चा की, वहीं दूसरी ओर Zero Trust Architecture, AI-आधारित सुरक्षा समाधान, और थ्रेट इंटेलिजेंस जैसे आधुनिक उपायों पर भी जोर दिया। उन्होंने सुझाव दिया कि भारत को एक ऐसी साइबर रणनीति अपनानी चाहिए, जो तेजी से बदलते खतरों का मुकाबला कर सके।
परिवार की भागीदारी: CDM की अनोखी पहल
इस व्याख्यान की विशेषता यह रही कि इसमें अधिकारियों की पत्नियों को भी शामिल किया गया। पेंद्याला ने कहा, “आज साइबर खतरे केवल सेना तक सीमित नहीं हैं। डिजिटल बैंकिंग, सोशल मीडिया, और स्मार्ट डिवाइस के माध्यम से पूरा परिवार प्रभावित हो सकता है।”
CDM का भविष्य की साइबर नेतृत्व के लिए दृष्टिकोण
