2017 में एनएससीएन-के के प्रमुख एस. एस. खापलांग की मृत्यु के बाद यह संगठन कई छोटे गुटों में बंट गया। वित्तीय संकट और नेतृत्व संघर्ष के चलते, इन गुटों ने अपहरण और फिरौती को अपना मुख्य साधन बना लिया।
