Tragedy Strikes Defence Research: BrahMos Project Engineer Dies Suddenly in Lucknow

In a shocking incident that has left the scientific and defence fraternity in deep sorrow, Aakashdeep Gupta (30), a young and talented system engineer associated with the BrahMos missile project under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), passed away suddenly in Lucknow late Tuesday night.
According to officials, Aakashdeep, who had been working with the DRDO for the past seven years, was visiting his hometown in Lucknow during the Diwali holidays. He reportedly complained of uneasiness late at night and was immediately rushed to Lokbandhu Hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest a cardiac arrest, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination. The incident has not only shaken his family and colleagues but also cast a pall of grief over the defence scientific community that regarded him as one of its promising young engineers.
Seven Years of Dedication to the BrahMos Mission
Aakashdeep had been a part of the BrahMos missile project, India’s flagship supersonic cruise missile programme jointly developed by India and Russia. Described by his colleagues as “brilliant, disciplined, and deeply passionate about technology,” Aakashdeep was known for his commitment to indigenous defence systems and his keen interest in advanced propulsion and guidance technologies.
“He was one of those young minds who brought fresh energy to the BrahMos mission,” said a senior DRDO official on condition of anonymity. “It’s an irreparable loss not just for his family but for the entire scientific community.”
Diwali Homecoming Turns Tragic
Aakashdeep was originally from Om Nagar, Alambagh, Lucknow, and had been posted in Delhi as part of the DRDO’s strategic missile development division. Having recently married Bharti Gupta, an officer at Canara Bank in Delhi, he had returned to Lucknow to celebrate Diwali with his family.
The family had gathered for a festive dinner on Tuesday night, according to his father, Kuldeep Gupta, a retired Uttar Pradesh Police officer. “He was perfectly fine. We all had dinner together, laughed, and went to bed. Around midnight, he suddenly felt unwell. We rushed him to the hospital, but the doctors couldn’t save him,” said his father, visibly shaken.
Aakashdeep’s sudden passing, at the prime of his career, has left his family and newly-wed wife devastated.
A Scholar and Gold Medalist
Known for his academic brilliance, Aakashdeep was a Gold Medalist in B.Tech, having graduated with top honours. His teachers and friends recall him as an exceptional student who combined intellect with humility. After securing his engineering degree, he was recruited by the DRDO, where he quickly established himself as a key contributor to several critical system design projects.
“He always dreamt of serving the nation through science and technology,” said one of his college professors. “Joining the BrahMos project was a dream come true for him. He used to say that working on India’s most advanced missile system gave him a sense of pride and purpose.”
Police Investigation Underway
Following the hospital’s report, Alambagh Police reached the scene and took custody of the body for post-mortem. Station House Officer (SHO) Subhash Chandra confirmed that all legal formalities are being followed and the cause of death will be conclusively known after the autopsy report.
“At this stage, it appears to be a case of sudden cardiac arrest. However, we are proceeding with standard procedure to rule out any other medical or external factors,” said SHO Chandra.

जानकारी के अनुसार, आकाशदीप लखनऊ स्थित अपने घर में दिवाली की छुट्टियाँ बिताने आए हुए थे। मंगलवार की देर रात उन्हें अचानक तबीयत खराब महसूस हुई। परिवारजन उन्हें तत्काल लखनऊ के लोकबंधु अस्पताल लेकर पहुंचे, जहां इलाज के दौरान डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया।
प्रारंभिक जांच में इसे हृदयगति रुकने (कार्डियक अरेस्ट) का मामला माना जा रहा है। हालांकि, पोस्टमॉर्टम रिपोर्ट आने के बाद ही मृत्यु का वास्तविक कारण स्पष्ट हो सकेगा।
सात वर्षों की सेवा – ब्रह्मोस मिशन के साथ जुड़ा एक समर्पित वैज्ञानिक

लखनऊ के आलमबाग क्षेत्र स्थित ओम नगर के निवासी आकाशदीप दिल्ली में DRDO के स्ट्रैटेजिक मिसाइल डेवलपमेंट डिवीजन में पदस्थापित थे। कुछ माह पूर्व ही उनकी शादी भारती गुप्ता से हुई थी, जो दिल्ली में केनरा बैंक में अधिकारी हैं।
दिवाली मनाने के लिए वे लखनऊ अपने माता-पिता के पास आए थे। उनके पिता कुलदीप गुप्ता, उत्तर प्रदेश पुलिस से सेवानिवृत्त अधिकारी हैं। परिवार के अनुसार, “रात को सबने साथ में खाना खाया, हंसे, बातें कीं। अचानक रात में उन्होंने बेचैनी की शिकायत की। हम उन्हें तुरंत अस्पताल लेकर गए, लेकिन डॉक्टरों ने कहा कि बहुत देर हो चुकी थी।”
दिवाली की खुशियाँ इस परिवार के लिए मातम में बदल गईं। नवविवाहिता भारती गुप्ता अभी भी सदमे में हैं।
एक स्वर्ण पदक विजेता, जो विज्ञान को राष्ट्र सेवा मानता था

पुलिस जांच और कानूनी प्रक्रिया
घटना की सूचना मिलने के बाद आलमबाग थाना पुलिस मौके पर पहुंची और शव को पोस्टमॉर्टम के लिए भेजा गया। थाना प्रभारी सुभाष चंद्र ने बताया कि कानूनी प्रक्रिया के तहत जांच की जा रही है।
उन्होंने कहा, “प्रारंभिक रूप से मामला हृदयगति रुकने का प्रतीत होता है। फिर भी हम मेडिकल रिपोर्ट आने तक किसी निष्कर्ष पर नहीं पहुंच सकते।”

उनकी माँ बार-बार रोते हुए कहती हैं, “मेरा बेटा हमेशा कहता था कि वो देश के लिए कुछ करेगा।”
उनकी पत्नी भारती गुप्ता अब भी सदमे में हैं और किसी से बात नहीं कर पा रही हैं।
