Two Indian Army Soldiers Missing in Kashmir’s Gadol Forest; Massive Search Operation Underway Amid Harsh Terrain and Snowfall
Kokernag (Jammu and Kashmir), October 8, 2025 –
A massive search operation is currently underway in the dense Gadol forest area of Kokernag, Anantnag district in South Kashmir, after two Indian Army soldiers from the elite 5 Para (Special Forces) went missing during a patrol mission on October 6. Despite challenging weather, dense vegetation, and rugged terrain, the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police have jointly intensified efforts to locate the missing personnel.
The missing soldiers, both Agniveer commandos from the 5 Para (Special Forces) — one of the most battle-hardened and prestigious units of the Indian Army — were on a routine area domination patrol when contact with them was suddenly lost. The incident occurred in one of the most hostile terrains of the Kashmir Valley, notorious for its thick forests, deep ravines, and unpredictable weather conditions.
High-Alert Operation in South Kashmir’s Rugged Forest Belt
Soon after the loss of communication, the Indian Army launched an extensive multi-dimensional search operation, employing drones, helicopters, and dog squads to sweep through the vast and treacherous forest. The operation has entered its third day, and security forces are battling not just the rugged geography but also severe cold and heavy snowfall, with reports indicating nearly two feet of snow accumulation in some patches of the forest.
Ground teams from the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Forces detachments are scouring the region on foot, while helicopters provide aerial reconnaissance support to locate potential heat signatures or movement under the thick canopy. Drone surveillance has been intensified to map possible routes taken by the missing soldiers, but the weather has made visibility poor and aerial operations risky.
According to sources, no terrorist activity has been detected so far, and officials are currently treating this as a case of disorientation or accidental separation due to poor visibility and extreme conditions.
A History of Violence in Gadol Forest
The Gadol forest, located between Kokernag and Kishtwar, has long been known as a hotspot for counter-terror operations. In September 2023, the same forest witnessed a fierce encounter that claimed the lives of multiple security personnel, including a commanding officer, a major, and a deputy superintendent of police. The terrain’s dense foliage and complex topography make it ideal for terrorist hideouts, forcing the security forces to maintain a high level of vigilance and constant area domination patrols.
Given its proximity to the Panjtarni–Kishtwar axis, the forest acts as a corridor for infiltration and militant movement. Therefore, the disappearance of two trained commandos has raised significant operational concerns, even though the Army has not confirmed any militant angle at this stage.
Ground Forces Push Forward Despite Adverse Weather
Teams from the Indian Army’s 19 Rashtriya Rifles, 5 Para (SF), and local police units have set up multiple search grids covering all possible movement trails in and around the forest. Senior Army commanders from the Victor Force Headquarters are directly supervising the operation.
Rescue teams equipped with thermal imaging devices, GPS trackers, and night vision equipment are conducting search operations even in low-visibility conditions. Despite the terrain’s unpredictability — steep slopes, water streams, and heavy undergrowth — the search has not been called off at any hour since it began.
An official source from the Army stated,
“We are deploying every resource available to locate our men. The weather has been unforgiving, and the snow has hampered visibility. But our search will continue relentlessly until we bring our soldiers home.”
Helicopters and Drones Take the Lead in Aerial Reconnaissance
The Army Aviation Corps has deployed light utility helicopters for low-altitude surveillance, while drones with advanced thermal imaging systems are scanning forest clearings and ridgelines. However, the snowfall and fog have limited their operational window, forcing reliance on ground-based teams.
The area’s communication network is weak, and in many parts, the forest canopy disrupts GPS signals, complicating efforts to trace the soldiers’ last known positions. Army sources revealed that the missing soldiers were part of a reconnaissance and familiarization patrol, not a combat mission, and were in contact with their base before communications abruptly ceased.
Local Support and Security Coordination
The Jammu and Kashmir Police, local administration, and village volunteers have been assisting the Army by sharing local terrain knowledge and helping mark possible routes or hideouts. The Army has appealed to local residents to remain alert and report any movement or sighting related to the missing soldiers.
Local sources mention that the area has recently experienced sudden temperature drops and high-altitude snowfall, which could have led to disorientation or a physical mishap. “These forests are extremely dense and difficult to navigate even for locals. Losing direction for a few hours here can mean being trapped in snow or crevices for days,” said a Kokernag resident familiar with the area.
Agniveer Commandos from 5 Para – The Nation’s Elite
The 5 Para (Special Forces) unit is part of India’s elite parachute regiment, trained for deep infiltration, counter-insurgency, and high-altitude warfare. Its commandos are handpicked, rigorously trained, and capable of operating independently under hostile conditions.
Their loss of contact has therefore raised both concern and disbelief within defence circles. The unit has a long history of operations in Kashmir, particularly in the Anantnag–Kokernag sector, and is considered among the Army’s most capable in jungle and mountain warfare.
No Terror Angle Confirmed Yet
Army officials have emphasized that, as of now, no evidence suggests terrorist involvement. The incident appears to be weather-related, with snow and difficult terrain possibly contributing to the disappearance. The possibility of the soldiers getting trapped or injured due to a fall in the rocky gorges of the area is being examined.
However, considering the forest’s past record, counter-terror teams remain on standby, ensuring the search does not become vulnerable to ambush. All approaches to the forest are being secured with heightened surveillance, and reinforcements have been moved to nearby base camps.
The Larger Context – Operations in the Kashmir Valley
The disappearance of two commandos comes at a time when the Indian Army has been maintaining enhanced operational readiness across South Kashmir following recent infiltration attempts along the Line of Control (LoC) and increased drone activity across the border. The Kokernag–Anantnag–Pahalgam axis remains one of the Army’s most sensitive counter-insurgency sectors.
Defence experts note that incidents like this underline the harsh realities faced by troops deployed in extreme conditions where terrain and weather are as formidable as the enemy itself.

कश्मीर के गाडोल जंगल में भारतीय सेना के दो जवान लापता – बर्फ़बारी और दुर्गम इलाके के बीच व्यापक सर्च ऑपरेशन जारी
कोकरनाग (जम्मू-कश्मीर), 8 अक्टूबर 2025 –
दक्षिण कश्मीर के अनंतनाग ज़िले के कोकरनाग इलाके में स्थित घने गाडोल जंगल में भारतीय सेना के दो जवानों के लापता होने के बाद एक विशाल खोज अभियान चलाया जा रहा है। दोनों जवान भारतीय सेना की 5 पैरा (स्पेशल फोर्सेज) इकाई के हैं और 6 अक्टूबर से उनका संपर्क बेस से टूट गया है। बर्फ़बारी, दुर्गम पर्वतीय रास्तों और घने जंगलों के बीच सेना और जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस की संयुक्त टीमें ड्रोन, हेलीकॉप्टर और डॉग स्क्वॉड की मदद से सर्च ऑपरेशन को अंजाम दे रही हैं।
लापता जवान दोनों अग्निवीर कमांडो हैं, जो 5 पैरा (स्पेशल फोर्सेज) यूनिट के तहत गश्त कर रहे थे। यह वही यूनिट है जो भारतीय सेना की सबसे खतरनाक और प्रशिक्षित टुकड़ियों में गिनी जाती है। 6 अक्टूबर को नियमित गश्ती अभियान के दौरान उनका संपर्क टूट गया। गाडोल का यह इलाका अत्यंत खतरनाक और दुर्गम माना जाता है — जहां घने जंगल, खाईयां, और ऊबड़-खाबड़ पहाड़ आतंकवादियों की गतिविधियों के लिए उपयुक्त माने जाते हैं।
दक्षिण कश्मीर के दुर्गम जंगलों में हाई अलर्ट ऑपरेशन
जवानों के संपर्क टूटने के तुरंत बाद सेना ने एक वृहद पैमाने का सर्च ऑपरेशन शुरू किया। इसमें ड्रोन, हेलीकॉप्टर और डॉग स्क्वॉड के साथ-साथ ज़मीनी टीमें भी शामिल हैं। यह ऑपरेशन अब तीसरे दिन में प्रवेश कर चुका है। मौसम बेहद ख़राब है और इलाके में दो फीट तक बर्फ़ जम चुकी है, जिससे खोज कार्य कठिन हो गया है।
राष्ट्र rifles (RR) और स्पेशल फोर्सेज की टीमें पैदल जंगल के अंदर तक जाकर तलाशी ले रही हैं। ऊपर से आर्मी एविएशन के हेलीकॉप्टर लगातार निगरानी कर रहे हैं ताकि किसी भी गतिविधि या गर्मी के निशान (heat signatures) का पता लगाया जा सके।
सेना के सूत्रों के अनुसार, फिलहाल किसी आतंकी गतिविधि के प्रमाण नहीं मिले हैं और यह माना जा रहा है कि संभवतः मौसम और भौगोलिक कठिनाई के कारण संपर्क टूट गया होगा।
गाडोल जंगल का हिंसक इतिहास
गाडोल जंगल, जो कोकरनाग और किश्तवाड़ के बीच स्थित है, लंबे समय से काउंटर-टेरर ऑपरेशनों का मुख्य क्षेत्र रहा है। सितंबर 2023 में इसी इलाके में एक भयावह मुठभेड़ हुई थी जिसमें सेना और पुलिस के कई अधिकारी शहीद हुए थे। घने पेड़ों और जटिल भूभाग के कारण यह इलाका आतंकियों के छिपने के लिए आदर्श माना जाता है।
पंजतरनी–किश्तवाड़ अक्ष के पास स्थित यह जंगल आतंकियों के लिए एक पारगमन मार्ग की तरह काम करता है। ऐसे में दो स्पेशल फोर्सेज कमांडो का लापता होना सेना के लिए बेहद चिंताजनक है, हालांकि अभी तक किसी आतंकी हमले की पुष्टि नहीं हुई है।
मौसम और इलाके से जूझ रही ग्राउंड टीमें
19 राष्ट्रीय राइफल्स, 5 पैरा (स्पेशल फोर्सेज) और जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस की टीमें संयुक्त रूप से इलाके में तलाशी अभियान चला रही हैं। विक्टर फोर्स मुख्यालय से वरिष्ठ अधिकारी पूरे अभियान की निगरानी कर रहे हैं।
टीमों को थर्मल इमेजिंग, जीपीएस और नाइट विज़न डिवाइसेज़ से लैस किया गया है ताकि कम दृश्यता की स्थिति में भी खोज जारी रखी जा सके। इलाके की ढलानें, पानी की धाराएँ और घने पेड़-पौधे खोज कार्य को कठिन बना रहे हैं, लेकिन सैनिक लगातार चौबीसों घंटे ऑपरेशन को जारी रखे हुए हैं।
सेना के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने कहा,
“हम अपने जवानों को हर हाल में ढूंढ निकालेंगे। मौसम बेहद खराब है, बर्फ़ और ठंड से हालात मुश्किल हैं, लेकिन हमारी कोशिशें जारी रहेंगी। हम तब तक नहीं रुकेंगे जब तक अपने भाइयों को वापस नहीं लाते।”
हेलीकॉप्टर और ड्रोन से आसमानी निगरानी जारी
आर्मी एविएशन कोर ने हल्के हेलीकॉप्टरों को निम्न ऊंचाई पर उड़ान भरने के लिए लगाया है ताकि जंगल की ऊपरी सतह से निगरानी की जा सके। साथ ही थर्मल इमेजिंग से लैस ड्रोन लगातार क्षेत्र की स्कैनिंग कर रहे हैं। लेकिन घना कोहरा और बर्फ़बारी इन अभियानों में बाधा डाल रही है।
इलाके में नेटवर्क और जीपीएस सिग्नल कमजोर हैं, जिससे सटीक लोकेशन ट्रैक करने में दिक्कत हो रही है। सेना के अनुसार, लापता जवान रीकॉनिसेंस और फैमिलियराइजेशन पेट्रोल पर थे और आखिरी बार संपर्क सामान्य स्थिति में हुआ था, जिसके बाद संचार टूट गया।
स्थानीय सहयोग से बढ़ाई गई खोज की रफ्तार
जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस, स्थानीय प्रशासन और ग्रामीणों को भी तलाशी अभियान में शामिल किया गया है। सेना ने आम नागरिकों से अपील की है कि वे किसी भी संदिग्ध हलचल या जानकारी को तुरंत साझा करें।
स्थानीय सूत्रों के अनुसार, पिछले कुछ दिनों में इलाके में अचानक तापमान गिरा और ऊंचाई वाले इलाकों में भारी बर्फ़बारी हुई, जिससे गश्त करने वाले जवान रास्ता भटक सकते हैं या फिसलन भरे पहाड़ी हिस्सों में फंस सकते हैं। कोकरनाग के एक ग्रामीण ने बताया,
“ये जंगल इतने घने हैं कि स्थानीय लोग भी दिन में बिना रास्ता भटके नहीं जा सकते। यहां कुछ घंटे दिशा खो देने का मतलब है कि आप दिनों तक फंस सकते हैं।”
5 पैरा (स्पेशल फोर्सेज) – भारत की अभेद्य शक्ति
5 पैरा (स्पेशल फोर्सेज) भारतीय सेना की सबसे विशेष इकाइयों में से एक है, जो दुश्मन की सीमा के अंदर जाकर ऑपरेशन करने, आतंकवाद-रोधी मिशन, और ऊंचाई वाले युद्धों में निपुण मानी जाती है।
इन कमांडो का लापता होना न केवल चिंता का विषय है बल्कि सुरक्षा हलकों के लिए एक रहस्य भी है। यह यूनिट अनंतनाग और कोकरनाग सेक्टर में लंबे समय से तैनात रही है और कठिनतम अभियानों में हिस्सा ले चुकी है।
फिलहाल आतंकवादी साजिश के संकेत नहीं
सेना के अधिकारियों ने स्पष्ट किया है कि अब तक किसी आतंकी गतिविधि के सबूत नहीं मिले हैं। प्राथमिक जांच में यह माना जा रहा है कि जवान मौसम की मार या किसी दुर्घटना का शिकार हो सकते हैं।
हालांकि इलाके के पिछले रिकॉर्ड को देखते हुए, सुरक्षा बलों ने काउंटर-टेरर टीमें भी सतर्क रखी हैं ताकि तलाशी अभियान के दौरान किसी भी संभावित घात से बचा जा सके।
कश्मीर घाटी के हालात के बीच यह घटना
यह घटना उस समय हुई है जब सेना ने दक्षिण कश्मीर में उच्च सतर्कता स्थिति बनाए रखी है। हाल के हफ्तों में नियंत्रण रेखा (LoC) के पार से घुसपैठ की कई कोशिशें हुई हैं और ड्रोन गतिविधियों में वृद्धि देखी गई है।
विशेष रूप से कोकरनाग–अनंतनाग–पहलगाम अक्ष सेना के लिए सबसे संवेदनशील इलाकों में से एक माना जाता है। इस घटना ने एक बार फिर यह दिखा दिया है कि कश्मीर में तैनात सैनिकों के लिए मौसम और भूभाग भी दुश्मन से कम नहीं होते।
आधिकारिक बयान का इंतज़ार, देशभर में चिंता
अब तक भारतीय सेना की ओर से कोई आधिकारिक पुष्टि नहीं की गई है। दोनों लापता जवानों के परिवारों को सूचित कर दिया गया है और सेना के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी लगातार हालात पर नजर रखे हुए हैं।
सेना के जनसंपर्क विभाग ने अफवाहों से बचने की अपील की है और कहा है कि “जब तक ठोस जानकारी सामने नहीं आती, किसी भी तरह की अटकलों से परहेज किया जाए।”
इस बीच, देशभर में लोग दोनों जवानों की सकुशल वापसी की दुआएं कर रहे हैं।
उम्मीद और संकल्प का अभियान
गाडोल जंगल में जारी यह सर्च मिशन केवल एक खोज नहीं, बल्कि संकल्प, भाईचारे और वर्दी के उस वचन का प्रतीक है जो कहता है — ‘किसी साथी को पीछे नहीं छोड़ेंगे।’
