Two Indian Navy Kayakers, Including Asia Cup Gold Medalist, Killed in Tragic Road Accident in Bhopal

In the pre-dawn silence of Bhopal’s Parwalia stretch, a tragedy unfolded that has shaken India’s sports and defence communities alike. Two promising Indian Navy sportsmen — Chief Petty Officer Vishnu Raghunathan (27) and Petty Officer Ananth Krishnan (18) — lost their lives in a devastating road accident early Sunday morning after being hit by a speeding, unidentified vehicle while en route to their daily practice session.
The two, both elite kayakers of the Indian Navy’s sports wing, were reportedly heading toward the Boat Club in Bhopal for morning training when the fatal collision occurred around 3 a.m. near Raksha Bihar Colony. According to police, their motorcycle was struck head-on by a fast-moving vehicle that fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of shattered debris, blood stains, and silence.
The Night That Changed Everything
Police reports suggest the incident occurred on a relatively deserted stretch of road frequently used by defence personnel and athletes heading to the lake for early training. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team recovered two helmets, fragments of metal, and a broken roadside pole from the crash site — indicating the involvement of a heavy vehicle. The impact was so severe that the motorcycle was found almost completely destroyed, its frame twisted beyond recognition.
It was their teammates — following in a separate vehicle — who found them first. “They were lying on the road, barely conscious,” a member of their unit said, fighting back tears. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Chief Petty Officer Vishnu Raghunathan succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission, while Petty Officer Ananth Krishnan passed away during treatment a few hours later.
Vishnu Raghunathan: A Rising Star of Indian Kayaking
Born in Kerala, Vishnu Raghunathan had been one of the brightest young names in Indian kayaking. His determination and discipline had made him a key figure in the Navy’s sporting contingent. He had won the gold medal in the 1000m K-2 event at the 2024 Asia Cup in Hong Kong, bringing pride not only to the Navy but to India’s entire water sports community.
Colleagues remember Vishnu as a man of quiet strength and immense humility. “He trained with intensity but lived with simplicity,” said one of his coaches. “He was among those rare athletes who didn’t chase fame — he chased perfection.” His dedication had also inspired many younger sailors and sportsmen within the Navy, especially those aspiring to represent India internationally.
Ananth Krishnan: The Young Aspirant with a Bright Future
At just 18, Petty Officer Ananth Krishnan represented the next generation of Indian naval athletes. Known for his speed, stamina, and cheerful personality, Ananth had joined the Navy’s sports cadre earlier this year and was already being groomed for international tournaments. His sudden death has left his teammates shattered.
“He used to call me every evening after practice to discuss techniques and timing improvements,” said his coach. “He was still learning but had a spark that couldn’t be ignored. His loss is immeasurable.”
Investigation Underway: Search for the Offending Vehicle
The Parwalia police station has registered a case of culpable homicide due to rash and negligent driving and is examining CCTV footage from several cameras installed near the defence colony and along the main road. The investigating team believes the vehicle involved could be a truck or a large SUV, based on the extent of the damage and debris found.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anil Patel said, “We have identified a few possible vehicles captured on CCTV around the time of the crash. Our teams are working to trace their movements. We will not rest until we find who did this.”
Both Vishnu and Ananth were reportedly wearing helmets at the time of the accident — a detail that underscores the sheer force of the collision. The initial FSL assessment suggests that the vehicle was travelling at a speed well above the prescribed limit.
A Broader Pattern of Recklessness
The double tragedy comes amid a disturbing pattern of hit-and-run cases that have plagued Madhya Pradesh over the past weekend, exposing the growing menace of speeding and drunk driving.
In Indore, two young men — Ayush (23) and Krishna Pal (21) — were killed instantly when a speeding SUV rammed into their motorcycle near a private hospital in the Lasudia area. A third rider, Shreyansh, remains in critical condition at MY Hospital. CCTV footage helped police identify the offending SUV, and a manhunt has been launched for the absconding driver.
Meanwhile, in another horrifying incident in Bhopal, a Bolero driver identified as Alkesh Paliwal caused chaos near Danish Square, ramming into vehicles and pedestrians late Saturday night. Four people sustained injuries, though all are now stable. Police confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of arrest.
These successive accidents have intensified demands for stronger road safety enforcement, especially in areas frequented by military and sports personnel who rely on early morning commute routes for training.
The Navy and Sports Fraternity Mourns
The Indian Navy, which places immense pride in its sporting contingent, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of two of its most promising athletes. Senior officials in Bhopal and Kochi have reportedly arranged for full military honours during the final rites.
A Navy spokesperson stated, “Chief Petty Officer Vishnu Raghunathan and Petty Officer Ananth Krishnan were exceptional athletes who served the nation both in uniform and through sport. Their passing is an irreparable loss to the Navy and the entire Indian sporting fraternity.”
Messages of condolence have poured in from across the nation — from fellow naval officers, sports authorities, and fans. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Kayaking & Canoeing Federation of India have also issued statements mourning the tragic loss and calling for enhanced safety measures for athletes in training.

रविवार की तड़के भोर जब भोपाल के परवलिया इलाके में सन्नाटा पसरा था, तभी एक ऐसा हादसा हुआ जिसने पूरे देश के खेल और रक्षा जगत को हिला दिया। भारतीय नौसेना के दो होनहार खिलाड़ी — चीफ पेटी ऑफिसर विष्णु रघुनाथन (27) और पेटी ऑफिसर अनंत कृष्णन (18) — एक दर्दनाक सड़क दुर्घटना में अपनी जान गंवा बैठे। दोनों को एक तेज़ रफ्तार अज्ञात वाहन ने कुचल दिया जब वे अपनी रोज़ाना की प्रैक्टिस सेशन के लिए बोट क्लब, भोपाल जा रहे थे।
यह हादसा सुबह लगभग 3 बजे हुआ जब दोनों बाइक से प्रशिक्षण स्थल की ओर जा रहे थे। पुलिस के मुताबिक, उनकी मोटरसाइकिल को एक तेज़ रफ्तार वाहन ने रक्षा बिहार कॉलोनी के पास टक्कर मार दी। चालक मौके से फरार हो गया, जबकि सड़क पर खून के धब्बे, हेलमेट और टूटे हुए पोल उस टक्कर की भयावहता बयान कर रहे थे।
वह रात जिसने सब कुछ बदल दिया
पुलिस रिपोर्ट के अनुसार हादसा उस सुनसान मार्ग पर हुआ जहां अक्सर सुबह-सुबह नौसेना के जवान और खिलाड़ी अभ्यास के लिए निकलते हैं। फॉरेंसिक साइंस लैबोरेटरी (FSL) की टीम ने मौके से दो हेलमेट, मेटल के टुकड़े और एक टूटा हुआ बिजली का पोल बरामद किया, जिससे स्पष्ट हुआ कि हादसे में भारी वाहन शामिल था। मोटरसाइकिल बुरी तरह से चकनाचूर पाई गई — उसका ढांचा पूरी तरह मरोड़ गया था।
सबसे पहले उनके साथी नौसैनिक ही वहां पहुंचे, जो थोड़ी दूरी पर पीछे आ रहे थे। “दोनों सड़क पर पड़े थे, मुश्किल से होश में,” उनके एक साथी ने भावुक होकर कहा। उन्हें तुरंत अस्पताल ले जाया गया, लेकिन विष्णु रघुनाथन ने अस्पताल पहुंचते ही दम तोड़ दिया, जबकि अनंत कृष्णन ने इलाज के दौरान कुछ घंटे बाद आखिरी सांस ली।

सहकर्मी उन्हें एक शांत स्वभाव और गहरी निष्ठा वाले व्यक्ति के रूप में याद करते हैं। उनके कोच ने कहा, “वह कभी प्रसिद्धि के पीछे नहीं भागे, वह पूर्णता के पीछे भागते थे।” उनकी लगन ने नौसेना के कई युवा खिलाड़ियों को प्रेरित किया था। विष्णु का सपना था कि वह भारत को ओलंपिक स्तर पर प्रतिनिधित्व करते हुए देखे, लेकिन किस्मत ने उनके रास्ते को यहीं रोक दिया।
अनंत कृष्णन: एक उज्ज्वल भविष्य जो अधूरा रह गया
सिर्फ 18 साल की उम्र में अनंत कृष्णन भारतीय नौसेना के खेल दस्ते में शामिल हुए थे। वे ऊर्जा, फिटनेस और आत्मविश्वास से भरपूर थे। हाल ही में उन्होंने नौसेना के खेल केंद्र में प्रशिक्षण शुरू किया था और भविष्य के अंतरराष्ट्रीय टूर्नामेंटों के लिए तैयार किए जा रहे थे। उनके साथियों का कहना है कि वह हमेशा मुस्कुराते रहते और दूसरों की मदद करने में आगे रहते थे।
उनके कोच ने कहा, “वह रोज़ रात मुझसे फोन पर बात करते थे — बताते कि आज क्या सीखा, क्या सुधार किया। उनमें चमक थी, जिसे नज़रअंदाज़ नहीं किया जा सकता था।” अनंत का यूं अचानक चला जाना नौसेना के पूरे प्रशिक्षण दल को सदमे में छोड़ गया।
जांच जारी: लापरवाह वाहन की तलाश में पुलिस
परवलिया पुलिस ने मामला दर्ज कर लिया है और इसे लापरवाही से वाहन चलाकर मृत्यु कारित करने की श्रेणी में रखा गया है। आसपास लगे CCTV कैमरों की फुटेज खंगाली जा रही है ताकि टक्कर मारने वाले वाहन की पहचान हो सके। प्रारंभिक जांच में यह अनुमान लगाया गया है कि वह वाहन ट्रक या बड़ी SUV थी, क्योंकि घटनास्थल पर भारी धातु के टुकड़े मिले हैं।
एसीपी अनिल पटेल ने बताया, “हमने कुछ संदिग्ध वाहनों की पहचान की है जो उस समय इलाके से गुजरे। हमारी टीमें उनके मार्ग का पता लगा रही हैं। दोषी को सजा दिलाकर ही चैन लेंगे।”
दोनों नौसेनिक हेलमेट पहने हुए थे, लेकिन टक्कर इतनी जोरदार थी कि सुरक्षा के सारे उपाय बेअसर साबित हुए। FSL रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, टक्कर मारने वाला वाहन अत्यधिक रफ्तार से चल रहा था।
तेज़ रफ्तार और लापरवाही का बढ़ता खतरा
यह हादसा ऐसे समय में हुआ जब मध्य प्रदेश में तेज़ रफ्तार और हिट-एंड-रन घटनाएं लगातार बढ़ रही हैं। सप्ताहांत में ही भोपाल और इंदौर में कई गंभीर सड़क दुर्घटनाएं हुईं।
इंदौर में दो युवक — आयुष (23) और कृष्ण पाल (21) — की मौत उस वक्त हुई जब एक तेज़ रफ्तार SUV ने उनकी बाइक को अस्पताल के पास टक्कर मार दी। तीसरा साथी श्रेयांश गंभीर रूप से घायल है और एम.वाई. अस्पताल में भर्ती है। पुलिस ने CCTV फुटेज से SUV की पहचान कर ली है और फरार चालक की तलाश जारी है।
वहीं भोपाल में शनिवार रात दानिश स्क्वायर इलाके में एक बोलेरो चालक — अल्केश पालीवाल — ने नशे की हालत में कई वाहनों और राहगीरों को टक्कर मार दी। चार लोग घायल हुए, हालांकि सभी की हालत अब स्थिर है। पुलिस ने चालक को मौके से गिरफ्तार किया और उसके शराब पीने की पुष्टि की।
इन घटनाओं ने एक बार फिर रोड सेफ्टी कानूनों की सख्ती की मांग को हवा दी है, खासतौर पर उन मार्गों पर जहां सुबह-सुबह सेना और खेल जगत के लोग अभ्यास के लिए निकलते हैं।
नौसेना और खेल जगत में शोक की लहर
भारतीय नौसेना ने अपने इन दोनों खिलाड़ियों की असामयिक मौत पर गहरा शोक व्यक्त किया है। भोपाल और कोच्चि स्थित नौसेना इकाइयों ने बताया कि दोनों के अंतिम संस्कार में पूर्ण सैन्य सम्मान दिया जाएगा।
नौसेना प्रवक्ता ने कहा, “चीफ पेटी ऑफिसर विष्णु रघुनाथन और पेटी ऑफिसर अनंत कृष्णन न केवल उत्कृष्ट खिलाड़ी थे, बल्कि नौसेना की सेवा भावना के प्रतीक भी थे। उनका जाना पूरे नौसेना परिवार और भारतीय खेल जगत के लिए अपूरणीय क्षति है।”
स्पोर्ट्स अथॉरिटी ऑफ इंडिया (SAI) और कायाकिंग एवं कैनोइंग फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडिया ने भी संवेदना जताई और खिलाड़ियों की सुरक्षा को लेकर ठोस कदम उठाने की अपील की।
सड़क सुरक्षा पर उठे सवाल
यह हादसा एक बार फिर सड़क अनुशासन और जवाबदेही के सवाल खड़े करता है। देश में हर साल हजारों लोग तेज़ रफ्तार और लापरवाही के कारण सड़क हादसों में जान गंवाते हैं। रक्षा विश्लेषकों का कहना है कि अगर नौसेना के जैसे अनुशासित और प्रशिक्षित लोग भी सड़कों पर सुरक्षित नहीं हैं, तो यह समाज के लिए चेतावनी है।
एक पूर्व नौसेना अधिकारी ने कहा, “हम अपने जवानों को सबसे कठिन परिस्थितियों से निपटना सिखाते हैं, लेकिन उन्हें लापरवाह चालकों से नहीं बचा सकते। अब वक्त है कि सड़क अनुशासन को राष्ट्रीय चरित्र का हिस्सा माना जाए।”
एक राष्ट्र दो जवानों को याद करता हुआ
भोपाल का बोट क्लब, जहां हर सुबह पानी पर पैडल की आवाज़ गूंजती थी, अब सन्नाटे में डूबा है। दो कायाक नावें किनारे पर रखी हैं — उन पर नौसेना का तिरंगा लिपटा है। बगल में रखी पैडलें मानो उन हाथों का इंतज़ार कर रही हों जो अब कभी लौटकर नहीं आएंगे।
विष्णु और अनंत — एक जिसने देश के लिए स्वर्ण जीता और दूसरा जो उसी सपने के पीछे दौड़ रहा था — दोनों का सफर वहीं थम गया, जहां से उनके सपनों की शुरुआत होती थी। यह सिर्फ एक सड़क हादसा नहीं, बल्कि एक चेतावनी है कि लापरवाही की कीमत कितनी बड़ी हो सकती है।
