U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance Pitches F-35 Fighter Jets to India, Emphasizes Strategic Partnership and Cutting-Edge Technology
New Delhi/Washington D.C., April 22 — In a strong signal of growing Indo-U.S. defence ties, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has pitched the sale of F-35 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets to the Indian Air Force (IAF), marking a significant push for deeper military cooperation between the two democratic powers. Speaking at a high-level bilateral defense dialogue, Vance underscored the importance of shared security interests and access to “cutting-edge technology” for strategic partners.
“We see India not just as a regional partner but as a global one. Strategic partners need cutting-edge tech, and the F-35 represents the pinnacle of modern air combat capability. We hope India chooses American platforms to further deepen our defence cooperation,” Vance said.
The U.S. government’s overture comes at a time when India is actively pursuing the modernization of its air force, evaluating options for multirole fighter jets under its Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program, where over 100 aircraft are to be inducted to replace its ageing fleets. The F-35 Lightning II, developed by Lockheed Martin, is considered one of the most advanced stealth fighters in the world, offering state-of-the-art sensor fusion, unmatched situational awareness, and survivability in contested airspace.
Strategic Significance
The pitch by Vice President Vance reflects Washington’s increasing recognition of India’s role in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The U.S. has designated India a Major Defense Partner and continues to support its rise as a net security provider. If India chooses to induct the F-35, it would signify a watershed moment in bilateral defence ties—comparable to the landmark India-U.S. nuclear deal of 2008.
American defense officials have hinted that India could potentially access not just the conventional F-35A variant but also vertical take-off capable F-35B for carrier-based operations in the Indian Navy. However, such an inclusion would require extensive technical evaluations, interoperability adjustments, and political consensus in both capitals.
India’s Calculated Approach
Despite the allure of the F-35, India has traditionally maintained a diversified defence procurement policy, sourcing equipment from Russia, France, Israel, and increasingly, indigenous platforms like the Tejas Mk1A and upcoming Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Defence analysts suggest India may be cautious in fully committing to U.S. platforms due to geopolitical sensitivities, dependence on maintenance infrastructure, and the imperative of strategic autonomy.
Still, the offer has opened a new chapter in bilateral discussions. Top sources within India’s Ministry of Defence confirm that while no formal request for the F-35 has been made yet, “all options are being evaluated in the national interest.”

यह पेशकश ऐसे समय आई है जब भारत अपने वायुसेना बेड़े के आधुनिकीकरण के तहत मल्टी-रोल फाइटर एयरक्राफ्ट (MRFA) परियोजना के लिए नए लड़ाकू विमानों की तलाश में है। इस परियोजना के तहत 100 से अधिक विमान खरीदे जाने हैं। F-35, जिसे लॉकहीड मार्टिन द्वारा विकसित किया गया है, अपनी स्टील्थ क्षमताओं, सेंसर फ्यूजन, नेटवर्क-सेंट्रिक वॉरफेयर क्षमताओं और दुश्मन की हवाई रक्षा को भेदने की दक्षता के लिए जाना जाता है।

वाइस प्रेसिडेंट वेंस का यह बयान भारत की हिंद-प्रशांत क्षेत्र में स्थिरता बनाए रखने में बढ़ती भूमिका को अमेरिका द्वारा मान्यता देने का प्रतीक है। अमेरिका पहले ही भारत को ‘मेजर डिफेंस पार्टनर’ का दर्जा दे चुका है और भारत की ‘नेट सिक्योरिटी प्रोवाइडर’ के रूप में भूमिका को समर्थन देता रहा है। यदि भारत F-35 को चुनता है, तो यह दोनों देशों के बीच रक्षा संबंधों में एक ऐतिहासिक मोड़ होगा।
अमेरिकी अधिकारियों ने यह भी संकेत दिए हैं कि भारत को F-35A के अलावा नौसेना की आवश्यकताओं के अनुरूप वर्टिकल टेक-ऑफ क्षमताओं वाला F-35B भी मिल सकता है। हालांकि, इसके लिए तकनीकी मूल्यांकन, लॉजिस्टिक्स नेटवर्क, और दोनों देशों के बीच राजनीतिक सहमति आवश्यक होगी।
भारत की संतुलित रणनीति
हालांकि F-35 का प्रस्ताव बेहद आकर्षक है, लेकिन भारत ने हमेशा से अपने रक्षा खरीद में विविधता बनाए रखी है—जिसमें रूस, फ्रांस, इज़राइल और स्वदेशी प्लेटफॉर्म जैसे तेजस Mk1A और आगामी AMCA शामिल हैं। विश्लेषकों का मानना है कि अमेरिका पर पूरी तरह निर्भर होने से पहले भारत रणनीतिक स्वायत्तता को प्राथमिकता देगा।
