A CENTURY OF SERVICE: LT COL R. L. KRISHNIA’S EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO SOCIAL SERVICE

Born in Rajasthan, shaped by a proud military legacy, and still serving society at the age of 100, Lt Col R. L. Krishnia’s life is a remarkable chapter in India’s military history

Jaipur, Sunday, 04 October 2026: Lt Col R. L. Krishnia (Retd), born on 04 October 1926 in Purana Bas village in the Neem Ka Thana area of Rajasthan, has completed a remarkable century-long journey that reflects the finest traditions of military service, discipline, leadership and devotion to society. From the battlefields and military establishments of a newly independent India to the raising of infantry battalions and the command of a Prisoner of War camp that housed more than 10,000 prisoners during the Bangladesh Liberation War, his nearly three-decade-long military career spans some of the most significant chapters in the history of the Indian Army. Even after retiring from active military service in 1976, Lt Col Krishnia continued to remain associated with the larger cause of service through social work and philanthropic activities. His life today stands not merely as the story of an officer who served the nation in uniform, but as a living testimony to the enduring principle that duty does not end with retirement.

A SOLDIER’S JOURNEY THAT BEGAN IN A FAMILY OF WARRIORS

Lt Col Krishnia’s association with the Indian Army was deeply rooted in his family. He was born into a military household where service to the nation was not merely an occupation but a family tradition. His father, Subedar Major Shedu Ram, served with the 4 Rajputana Rifles and took part in military operations in the Middle East and Burma during the First and Second World Wars respectively. The experience of his father, who served during two global conflicts, became part of the family’s military legacy and helped shape an environment in which discipline, courage and responsibility were deeply valued. The military tradition continued into the next generation as well, with Lt Col Krishnia’s elder brother, Major Shiv Singh, subsequently being commissioned into the same battalion. Thus, long before Krishnia himself entered the portals of the Indian Military Academy, the values of military service were already embedded in his family and upbringing.

FROM RAWALPINDI TO THE INDIAN MILITARY ACADEMY

In 1946, at a crucial moment in the history of the Indian subcontinent, Krishnia was selected through the Services Selection Board at Rawalpindi for the third batch of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His selection came during a period when the Indian military establishment was undergoing transformation against the backdrop of the final years of British rule and the approaching independence of India. Training at the Indian Military Academy prepared a new generation of Indian officers for leadership and responsibility at a time when the country was moving towards a completely new military and political era. For Krishnia, this training became the foundation of a career that would eventually take him through combat deployments, regimental institution-building, command responsibilities and some of the most challenging assignments of the post-Independence Indian Army.

COMMISSIONED INTO 1 BIHAR AND THE HISTORIC OPERATION POLO

After completing his training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, in 1948, Krishnia was commissioned into the First Battalion of the 1 Bihar Regiment. It was an important moment not only in his personal military journey but also in the early years of independent India. The young officer soon found himself associated with one of the significant military operations undertaken by India after Independence. The battalion was subsequently deployed to Hyderabad during Operation Polo in 1948. The operation, which led to the integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union, became one of the defining military episodes of the early years of independent India. For an officer at the beginning of his career, participation in such an operation provided invaluable exposure to operational planning, field conditions, military leadership and the realities of service during a formative period in the nation’s history.

FOUR YEARS WITH THE CORPS OF MILITARY POLICE

Following his early regimental service, Lt Col Krishnia was posted to the Corps of Military Police, where he served for approximately four years. The assignment provided him with experience beyond conventional infantry duties and exposed him to another critical dimension of military administration and discipline. Service with the Corps of Military Police demanded a high degree of professionalism, responsibility and understanding of military law and regulations. This phase of his career added another layer to his experience and contributed to the professional foundation that would later support his responsibilities in raising and commanding infantry battalions.

THE CHALLENGE OF RAISING 5 BIHAR

One of the most significant milestones in Lt Col Krishnia’s military career came during his tenure at the Bihar Regimental Centre, when he was entrusted with the responsibility of raising 5 Bihar Regiment on 01 January 1963. Raising a new infantry battalion is a major organisational responsibility requiring the creation of an effective fighting unit from its foundations. It involves building systems, establishing traditions, bringing together personnel, developing training standards and creating the cohesion necessary for a battalion to operate as a unified military formation. Krishnia not only played a key role in the raising of 5 Bihar but also served as its first Commanding Officer in an acting capacity for approximately ten months. His role in establishing the battalion became one of the defining chapters of his service and demonstrated his ability to combine leadership with institution building.

FROM 5 BIHAR TO THE RAISING OF 8 BIHAR

After being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Krishnia took on another major responsibility when he became the Raising-in-Charge and first Commanding Officer of 8 Bihar Regiment. The assignment represented a continuation of his experience in creating and shaping infantry institutions. Having already been involved in the raising of 5 Bihar, he brought with him considerable organisational and command experience. The responsibility of establishing another battalion required not only administrative expertise but also the ability to develop a strong regimental ethos, operational preparedness and unit cohesion. His association with both 5 Bihar and 8 Bihar consequently occupies a distinctive place in the history of his military career.

FROM BHUTAN TO THE EAST PAKISTAN BORDER

Under Lt Col Krishnia’s leadership, 8 Bihar was deployed to Bhutan and subsequently moved towards the East Pakistan border at the beginning of the 1971 War. The deployment came at a particularly significant time in South Asian history, when political instability and conflict in East Pakistan were rapidly developing into a major military crisis. The movement of the battalion towards the eastern theatre placed its personnel in an environment of heightened operational importance. For Krishnia, the assignment represented another major transition from the task of building a military institution to leading an operational infantry battalion in a period of war.

THE 1971 WAR AND A COMMAND RESPONSIBILITY BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD

The 1971 conflict was a defining moment in the military history of the Indian subcontinent, ultimately resulting in the liberation of Bangladesh and the creation of a new nation. Following his transfer from the battalion, Lt Col Krishnia was entrusted with the command of a Prisoner of War camp at Agra. The assignment was fundamentally different from leading an infantry battalion in the field, yet it demanded an equally high level of discipline, organisation and responsibility. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, the camp housed more than 10,000 prisoners of war from East Pakistan. Managing such a large number of prisoners required an extensive administrative structure, strict adherence to military procedures and the ability to maintain order and discipline under demanding circumstances. His command of the Agra POW camp therefore became another important chapter in a career that had already encompassed combat deployments, military policing, battalion raising and operational command.

A CAREER SPANNING ALMOST THREE DECADES OF INDIAN MILITARY HISTORY

By the time Lt Col Krishnia retired in 1976, he had spent nearly three decades in uniform. His career had unfolded across a period of extraordinary transformation in India’s military history. He entered military service during the final phase of British India, received his professional training at the Indian Military Academy during the transition to Independence, served during Operation Polo, contributed to the establishment of new infantry battalions, commanded troops during a period of heightened tension on the eastern frontier and subsequently handled the complex responsibility of a major Prisoner of War camp during the 1971 conflict. Few individual careers can capture so many distinct stages of the evolution of the Indian Army.

RETIREMENT IN 1976 DID NOT BRING AN END TO SERVICE

After almost three decades of military service, Lt Col R. L. Krishnia retired from the Indian Army in 1976. However, retirement from uniform did not mean retirement from the values that had defined his life. Having spent decades in an institution where the principles of duty, discipline, responsibility and service were central to daily life, he continued to remain connected with society. Based in Jaipur, he has remained involved in social service and philanthropic activities, carrying forward the same spirit of responsibility that characterised his military career. His post-retirement life demonstrates that service to society can take many forms and that the values acquired in military life can continue to influence an individual long after leaving active duty.

A CENTURY OF LIFE, A LEGACY OF DUTY

At the age of 100, Lt Col Krishnia represents a living bridge between generations of Indian military history. His life journey connects the pre-Independence military environment with the early years of the Republic and the subsequent evolution of the Indian Army. His association with 1 Bihar, 5 Bihar and 8 Bihar reflects three different but interconnected dimensions of military service — serving as a commissioned officer, helping establish a new battalion and taking responsibility for raising and commanding another infantry formation. His experiences during Operation Polo and the 1971 War further connect his personal journey with some of the defining military events of modern India.

“KARM HI DHARAM” — A LIFE THAT GIVES MEANING TO THE REGIMENTAL MOTTO

The Bihar Regiment’s motto, “Karm Hi Dharam” — Duty is Religion, finds a powerful reflection in Lt Col Krishnia’s life. From entering military service as a young officer to accepting demanding responsibilities in combat, administration, institution building and prisoner-of-war management, his career was shaped by an unwavering commitment to duty. Even after retirement, his continued involvement in social service has extended that philosophy beyond the military environment. His life demonstrates that the spirit of service is not confined to the years spent wearing the uniform; it can become a lifelong principle.

FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO SOCIAL SERVICE — AN ENDURING EXAMPLE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Lt Col R. L. Krishnia’s century-long journey is ultimately a story of continuity — continuity of duty, continuity of leadership and continuity of service. Born into a military family, trained at the Indian Military Academy, commissioned into 1 Bihar, involved in Operation Polo, entrusted with raising 5 Bihar, appointed the first Commanding Officer of 8 Bihar, deployed from Bhutan towards the East Pakistan border during the 1971 War and later placed in command of a major Prisoner of War camp at Agra, his military journey encompasses a remarkable range of responsibilities. His life after retirement has added another dimension to this legacy through social service and philanthropy. As he completes a century of life on 04 October 2026, Lt Col Krishnia stands as an enduring example of the idea that a soldier may retire from active duty, but the values of duty and service never truly retire.
