AIR FORCE DAY 2026: INDIAN AIR FORCE TO BRING ITS AERIAL POWER AND PROUD LEGACY TO KASHI
Varanasi Set to Witness Indian Air Force Day Aerial Display on October 22, 24 and 25
By Defence Journalist Sahil | T.I.N. NETWORK
VARANASI: The skies over the historic city of Varanasi are set to become a spectacular theatre of Indian air power as the Central Air Command prepares to organise the Indian Air Force Day Aerial Display 2026 on October 22, 24 and 25. The event, being organised as part of the celebrations marking the 94th anniversary of the Indian Air Force, will bring fighter aircraft, transport platforms, helicopters and the wider operational spirit of the IAF closer to the people of Kashi. With the Ganga riverfront providing the backdrop and Namo Ghat designated as the venue for the VIP stand, the aerial display is expected to combine military precision, technological capability and national pride in a highly visible public spectacle. The event will be open to members of the public from designated viewing areas, while detailed information regarding timings, spectator zones, traffic movement, parking and safety arrangements will be issued separately through official channels. The participation of the Hon’ble Prime Minister is also likely, although his attendance remains subject to final confirmation.
94 YEARS OF INDIAN AIR POWER: FROM A SMALL FORCE TO A MODERN AEROSPACE POWER
The Indian Air Force, established on 8 October 1932, has travelled a remarkable journey over nearly nine and a half decades. From its early beginnings as a relatively small aviation force, the IAF has evolved into a modern aerospace power entrusted with some of the country’s most critical national-security responsibilities. Its role today extends far beyond conventional air combat. The force is responsible for safeguarding India’s airspace, maintaining air superiority and air defence preparedness, supporting land and maritime operations, conducting strategic airlift, enabling rapid mobilisation of troops and equipment, undertaking surveillance and reconnaissance, and responding to humanitarian crises when conventional ground access becomes difficult or impossible. Air Force Day is therefore not merely a ceremonial occasion; it is a reminder of the people, technology, training, operational planning and sacrifice that sustain India’s air power. The 94th anniversary provides an opportunity to honour generations of air warriors who have served in peace and conflict while also showcasing the IAF’s continuing transformation for the demands of modern warfare.
KASHI AND THE AIR FORCE: A DEEPER INSTITUTIONAL CONNECTION
The choice of Varanasi as the setting for the aerial display carries significance beyond the visual spectacle. Kashi has maintained an institutional connection with the Indian Air Force for decades, most notably through No. 4 Air Force Selection Board, which has been operating from its present location in the city since January 1976. The selection board has played an important role in identifying and assessing young aspirants seeking to join the officer cadre of the Indian Air Force. It also administers the Computerised Pilot Selection System for candidates aspiring to enter the flying branch. For thousands of young men and women, therefore, Varanasi has represented much more than a historic and cultural centre; it has also served as one of the gateways through which aspiring officers begin their journey towards a career in military aviation. The aerial display now planned over the city provides an opportunity to strengthen this long-standing relationship between the IAF and the people of Kashi, particularly its younger generation.
CENTRAL AIR COMMAND: SIX DECADES OF OPERATIONAL PRESENCE IN PRAYAGRAJ
At the centre of the upcoming event is the Central Air Command, headquartered at Bamrauli in Prayagraj. The Command has been based in the city since February 1966 and completes 60 years of its presence there in 2026, giving the current Air Force Day celebrations an additional institutional dimension. Over the decades, CAC has remained closely associated with India’s air operations across a wide geographical area and has contributed to combat operations, strategic airlift, air defence, logistics, training and humanitarian assistance. The operational effectiveness of such a command is not created by aircraft alone. It depends on the combined efforts of pilots, aircrew, engineers, technicians, air traffic controllers, weapons specialists, medical personnel, logistics teams and ground-support staff. The aerial display in Varanasi will consequently represent not only the aircraft visible in the sky but also the vast network of personnel and systems that make sustained air operations possible.
FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO HUMANITARIAN OPERATIONS: THE CAC LEGACY
The operational history of Central Air Command is closely intertwined with some of the most important military and humanitarian missions undertaken by India. During the wars of 1965 and 1971, the Command made significant contributions to India’s military operations. Its operational record subsequently expanded into strategic air mobility and rapid deployment missions, demonstrating the importance of air power in situations where speed can determine the outcome of an operation. In Operation Cactus in November 1988, IL-76 aircraft belonging to No. 44 Squadron at Agra rapidly airlifted Indian Army troops to the Maldives following a request for assistance, demonstrating the ability of Indian military aviation to project force and move troops over considerable distances at short notice. The operation became an important example of strategic airlift and rapid military response, highlighting how transport aircraft can play a decisive role even when no conventional air battle is taking place.
OPERATION SAFED SAGAR AND THE PRECISION STRIKE ERA OF KARGIL
The contribution of Central Air Command formations became particularly prominent during Operation Safed Sagar in 1999, the Indian Air Force’s air campaign during the Kargil conflict. Mirage 2000 aircraft operating from Gwalior were employed for precision attacks against important targets in the Kargil sector, including targets associated with Tiger Hill and Muntho Dhalo. The employment of precision-guided weaponry during the conflict demonstrated the growing importance of accuracy, intelligence and carefully planned air operations in high-altitude warfare. At the same time, transport aircraft and helicopters performed essential support missions, ensuring that troops operating in extremely difficult mountainous terrain continued to receive logistical assistance. Kargil therefore demonstrated that air power is not restricted to offensive strike missions; it is an integrated capability involving reconnaissance, precision engagement, logistics, casualty evacuation and sustained support to ground forces.
AIR POWER THAT SAVES LIVES: THE HUMANITARIAN FACE OF THE INDIAN AIR FORCE
The legacy of Central Air Command is equally visible outside conventional military operations. Over the years, IAF aircraft and personnel have repeatedly been called upon when natural disasters have disrupted road networks, damaged infrastructure or isolated communities. From the Bhuj earthquake and the Indian Ocean tsunami to the devastating Uttarakhand disaster, the Indian Air Force has used its aircraft, aircrew and ground teams to move relief material, evacuate affected citizens and reach areas inaccessible through conventional transportation. During Operation Rahat in Uttarakhand and Operation Megh Rahat during the Jammu and Kashmir floods, air assets became critical lifelines for communities trapped by natural disasters. The IAF’s response to the Nepal earthquake and subsequent flood emergencies in different parts of India further demonstrated how military aviation can rapidly transition from combat readiness to humanitarian assistance. These missions reinforce an important aspect of India’s air-power philosophy: the same capability developed for national defence can become an indispensable instrument for saving lives during national emergencies.
KASHI’S GANGA RIVERFRONT TO BECOME A STAGE FOR INDIAN AIR POWER
The forthcoming aerial display will carry an additional visual and cultural significance because it will take place against the historic backdrop of the Ganga riverfront. Varanasi, one of India’s most recognisable cultural cities, will provide a unique setting for the display of military aviation. The contrast between the centuries-old heritage of Kashi and the advanced aircraft of modern India is expected to create a powerful representation of the country’s journey from historical civilisation to contemporary technological capability. For residents and visitors, the sight of military aircraft operating over the riverfront will provide an opportunity to witness the precision, coordination and professionalism associated with the Indian Air Force. For the IAF, the event will also serve as a public outreach initiative, allowing citizens to better understand the role played by air warriors and the extensive technological and human infrastructure behind every operational sortie.
YOUNG INDIA AND THE CALL OF THE SKIES
One of the most important objectives of bringing an Air Force Day aerial display to a major civilian centre such as Varanasi is its potential impact on young people. Military aviation has traditionally inspired generations of Indians to pursue careers in uniform, engineering, technology and aerospace. The presence of an Air Force selection institution in Varanasi makes this connection particularly relevant. Young spectators watching the aircraft overhead will not merely be witnessing a ceremonial display; many may see in it a possible career, a professional challenge or an opportunity to serve the nation. The Indian Air Force’s increasingly technology-driven character also opens pathways in areas ranging from aviation and aerospace engineering to cyber, communications, air defence, logistics, meteorology, medicine and unmanned systems. The Varanasi event can therefore become a bridge between India’s military heritage and the aspirations of a technologically ambitious younger generation.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND EVERY AIRCRAFT: AIR WARRIORS, TECHNICIANS AND GROUND CREWS
Aerial displays naturally draw public attention towards aircraft and pilots, but every sortie represents the work of hundreds of people operating behind the scenes. Aircraft have to be inspected, fuelled, armed where required, maintained and prepared for flight. Mission planning, air traffic control, communications, weather assessment, navigation, engineering support, medical preparedness and emergency response are all integral components of safe and effective aviation operations. The Central Air Command’s record reflects the contribution of this wider ecosystem. The Air Force Day celebration in Varanasi therefore honours not only the pilots seen in the sky but also the technicians, engineers, controllers, medical teams, administrative personnel and ground-support staff whose efforts make every successful mission possible. Their professionalism is one of the least visible but most important foundations of military air power.
A PUBLIC SPECTACLE BUILT AROUND SAFETY AND DISCIPLINE
As thousands of people are expected to show interest in the aerial display, spectator safety and civil-administration coordination will remain critical components of the event. The authorities are expected to separately announce detailed information concerning display timings, designated public viewing areas, traffic diversions, parking arrangements and spectator-safety instructions. Members of the public will be required to follow authorised directions and remain within designated areas so that the display can be conducted safely and smoothly. With a major metropolitan and pilgrimage destination such as Varanasi attracting large numbers of residents and visitors, effective coordination between the Central Air Command, civil administration, police and other agencies will be essential. Citizens are being urged to rely on official communication rather than unverified information circulating on social media.
AERIAL DISPLAY 2026: WHEN MILITARY PRECISION MEETS THE SPIRIT OF KASHI
The Indian Air Force Day Aerial Display 2026 is expected to become one of the most prominent public-facing aviation events associated with the IAF’s 94th anniversary celebrations. By bringing the event to Varanasi, Central Air Command is effectively taking the story of Indian air power beyond military bases and airfields and presenting it directly before citizens. The event will showcase the discipline, coordination and technological capability that define modern military aviation while simultaneously highlighting the humanitarian and nation-building roles performed by the IAF. The setting of Kashi adds another layer to the occasion: an ancient city witnessing the capabilities of a modern aerospace force. The display, therefore, is not simply about aircraft flying overhead; it is about connecting India’s military heritage, present-day operational readiness and future aspirations with the people who form the foundation of national strength.
FROM 1932 TO 2026: A LEGACY THAT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE
As the Indian Air Force completes 94 years, its journey reflects the broader transformation of India’s strategic and technological capabilities. From the early days of military aviation to an era defined by precision weapons, advanced sensors, strategic airlift, integrated air defence, networked operations and increasingly complex multi-domain warfare, the IAF has continuously adapted to changing security challenges. Central Air Command’s six-decade association with Prayagraj forms an important part of this larger story. The Varanasi aerial display will bring that history into public view while reminding citizens that military readiness is sustained every day, not merely displayed during ceremonial occasions. The aircraft that appear in the skies represent a much larger national effort involving training, technology, infrastructure, logistics, maintenance and the dedication of air warriors.
KASHI READY TO LOOK TO THE SKIES
With the Ganga flowing beneath and the historic city of Varanasi preparing to look skyward, the Indian Air Force Day Aerial Display 2026 promises to provide a distinctive combination of military aviation, national pride and public engagement. Scheduled for October 22, 24 and 25, the event will offer citizens an opportunity to witness the Indian Air Force’s capabilities while learning about the service’s operational history and humanitarian contributions. For the Central Air Command, the event also marks a moment of institutional significance as it completes six decades in Prayagraj. For Kashi, it will be a rare opportunity to witness India’s air warriors operating against one of the country’s most iconic landscapes. And for young Indians watching from the riverfront, the aircraft overhead may represent more than a spectacular sight—they may represent the possibility of a future in the service of the nation.
