An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor graduated in December 1985 and was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force on 06 December 1986. Over the next nearly four decades, he emerged as one of the IAF’s most seasoned fighter aviators, combining combat flying expertise with instructional and leadership acumen. A Qualified Flying Instructor and Fighter Combat Leader, Air Marshal Kapoor has flown all variants of the MiG-21 and the MiG-29, two aircraft that have formed the backbone of India’s air defence and offensive capability for decades.
With over 3,400 hours of flying experience on a wide range of combat and trainer aircraft, his career reflects deep familiarity with both legacy platforms and evolving air combat doctrines, making him exceptionally well-suited to guide the IAF through a complex transition phase.

He later went on to serve as the Air Officer Commanding of a premier air base, overseeing complex flying operations, infrastructure, logistics, and personnel management in a demanding operational setting.

He has served as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff Operations (Strategy) at Air Headquarters, where he was closely involved in long-term capability development, operational doctrines, and strategic planning. His appointment as Air Defence Commander at South Western Air Command placed him at the core of India’s air defence architecture in a critical theatre.
In addition, his diplomatic assignment as Defence Attaché to Pakistan provided him rare exposure to military diplomacy, intelligence assessment, and regional security dynamics, adding a nuanced strategic perspective to his professional portfolio.
Leadership at the Helm of Major Commands
Prior to assuming charge as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Kapoor served as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Training Command, where he oversaw the entire spectrum of training and human resource development within the Indian Air Force. In 2025, his contributions were further acknowledged with the conferment of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal by the Hon’ble President of India, placing him among the most decorated officers of his generation.

एयर मार्शल नागेश कपूर राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी के प्रतिष्ठित पूर्व छात्र हैं। उन्होंने दिसंबर 1985 में एनडीए से स्नातक किया और 06 दिसंबर 1986 को भारतीय वायुसेना की फ्लाइंग ब्रांच के फाइटर स्ट्रीम में कमीशन प्राप्त किया। लगभग 39 वर्षों से अधिक की अपनी विशिष्ट सेवा में उन्होंने एक अनुभवी फाइटर पायलट, क्वालिफाइड फ्लाइंग इंस्ट्रक्टर और फाइटर कॉम्बैट लीडर के रूप में अपनी पहचान स्थापित की।
