CHAKRA: Indian Army’s Western Command to Transform Existing Military Platforms for Future Combat; Seminar Scheduled for December 14–15
New Delhi, October 26, 2026: With the modern battlefield undergoing rapid transformation driven by emerging technologies, the Indian Army’s Western Command is intensifying its focus on upgrading existing military platforms to meet future operational challenges. In a significant step towards technology-driven military modernisation and indigenous defence innovation, Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, inaugurated the curtain raiser for the Mechanisation Technology Seminar 2.0 (MTS 2.0) at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on October 26, 2026.
Organised by Western Command in collaboration with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), the curtain-raiser event outlined the vision and key priorities of the forthcoming seminar, which will be held on December 14–15, 2026, at Chandimandir Military Station. The seminar will bring together representatives from the Indian Army, defence industry, academia and other stakeholders to explore practical technological solutions for strengthening the combat effectiveness of mechanised forces.
The seminar carries the theme ‘CHAKRA – Transforming Existing Platforms for Future Combat’, reflecting the Indian Army’s focus on enhancing the capabilities of existing military systems rather than relying exclusively on the induction of entirely new platforms. The initiative aims to transform existing assets into technologically advanced, more capable and future-ready combat systems suited to the increasingly complex demands of modern warfare.
Mechanised forces remain a critical component of land warfare, combining mobility, protection and firepower to achieve operational objectives. However, the changing character of conflict—shaped by drones, artificial intelligence, precision weapons, advanced sensors, networked systems and rapidly evolving battlefield technologies—has created new requirements for military platforms. Enhancing the effectiveness, adaptability, survivability and operational relevance of existing equipment is therefore an important element of military preparedness.
Through MTS 2.0, Western Command intends to create a focused platform where operational challenges identified by military users can be translated into clearly defined Problem Definition Statements (PDS). These statements will help communicate specific capability gaps and operational requirements to Indian defence manufacturers, technology developers, startups and academic institutions, encouraging them to develop practical, affordable and implementable solutions.
The seminar will focus on six interconnected areas: Combat Capability Enhancement, Harnessing Technology, Adaptability, Kinetics, Refurbishment and Atmanirbharta. Together, these priorities reflect an approach that combines operational experience with technological innovation, indigenous industrial expertise and the modernisation of existing military assets.
A key objective is to strengthen the connection between the personnel who operate military equipment and the organisations capable of developing solutions to their operational challenges. By placing real-world military requirements at the centre of the innovation process, the initiative seeks to encourage closer collaboration between the Armed Forces, industry and academia. This approach can help ensure that proposed technologies address actual battlefield needs and can be integrated into existing systems in a practical and effective manner.
The curtain raiser also highlighted the importance of technology-driven modernisation, civil-military collaboration and self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Atmanirbharta remains an important priority in strengthening India’s indigenous defence ecosystem, reducing dependence on external sources for critical technologies and encouraging domestic industry to contribute more directly to military capability development.
The collaboration between Western Command and SIDM is expected to provide an important link between military users and India’s defence manufacturing community. Industry representatives and academic institutions can contribute specialised expertise in engineering, digital technologies, sensors, automation, materials, systems integration and other fields relevant to the modernisation of mechanised platforms.
Refurbishment and capability enhancement can also offer a practical route to extending the operational relevance of existing equipment. By identifying technological gaps and integrating suitable upgrades, military platforms can potentially benefit from improved performance, greater adaptability and enhanced operational utility. The precise solutions will depend on the requirements identified by military users and the outcomes of the seminar’s deliberations.
MTS 2.0 builds on the broader objective of turning operational requirements into actionable technological development. Its emphasis on clearly defined problem statements is intended to provide industry and academia with a better understanding of the challenges faced by military formations, enabling them to propose solutions that are relevant, feasible and aligned with operational priorities.
The two-day seminar at Chandimandir Military Station will therefore serve as a platform for discussions on the modernisation of existing military platforms, indigenous technological innovation and emerging operational requirements. It will bring together the operational perspective of the Indian Army and the technical capabilities of industry and academia to explore pathways for strengthening mechanised forces.
As warfare continues to evolve, the ability to adapt existing capabilities to emerging threats is becoming increasingly important. Through the CHAKRA initiative, Western Command is seeking to advance a model of military modernisation that combines operational feedback, technological innovation, industrial collaboration and self-reliance.
The central objective of Mechanisation Technology Seminar 2.0 is to help bridge the gap between battlefield requirements and technological solutions. By encouraging the development of practical, implementable and indigenous innovations, the initiative seeks to strengthen the combat readiness, resilience and operational effectiveness of mechanised forces in the future battlefield environment.
