Children’s Day 2024 – “Army Kids, Army Way, Excel in Sports”

This Children’s Day, we celebrate the inspiring journeys of two remarkable young athletes, Chinmayi Kasodekar and Zara Swittens, both of whom have excelled in sports while growing up in military families. These two young talents from Jaipur, Rajasthan, embody the virtues of determination, resilience, and hard work instilled by their families and the disciplined environment in which they are raised. Through their achievements, they have become beacons of excellence, demonstrating that the “army way” not only builds character but also paves the way for remarkable achievements.

Chinmayi Kasodekar: Serving Up Success on the Tennis Court

Chinmayi Kasodekar, daughter of Colonel Ajit Kasodekar, embarked on her journey in lawn tennis at the tender age of 8 in Nagpur. Her journey has been one marked by persistence and a relentless desire to excel. Chinmayi initially competed in district-level tournaments under the School Games Federation of India with mixed outcomes, but each match helped her build invaluable experience and resilience.

Her family’s move to Jaipur in 2018 was a turning point, as she resumed her pursuit of tennis under the mentorship of coach Nikhil Singh Sisodiya at Jaipur Military Station. Under his guidance, Chinmayi’s game reached new heights. Her dedication soon paid off, and she clinched both silver and bronze medals in district-level tournaments in 2023 and 2024. Her growing prowess on the court also led to a silver medal in a state-level team event in 2023. Later that year, she earned a spot on the national team, proudly representing Rajasthan.

Beyond her accomplishments on the tennis court, Chinmayi is equally impressive academically. She secured an outstanding 90% in her Class 12 board exams in the humanities stream. Additionally, she cracked the highly competitive National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) entrance exam and is now pursuing a degree in Fashion Designing at NIFT Bengaluru. Chinmayi’s journey showcases the balance of sports and academics, setting an inspiring example for young aspirants.

Zara Swittens: Riding Her Way to Global Recognition

Another rising star from Jaipur is Zara Swittens, a young and exceptionally talented equestrian athlete with a deep-rooted passion for horses. Zara’s journey into equestrian sports started early, with her father, Lt Col D Swittens of the 61 Cavalry, playing a pivotal role in fostering her interest and developing her skills. Lt Col Swittens, a decorated officer with numerous national and international accolades, has provided invaluable mentorship to Zara as she trained for regional and national competitions.

Zara’s list of accomplishments in the equestrian world is impressive. In a short span of competition, she has won three national medals and numerous regional titles across the country, showcasing her skill and competitive spirit. Her defining moment came when she participated in the FEI World Children’s Classic Show Jumping competition, where her remarkable performance earned her an overall second place, securing her a world ranking in the sport. This achievement catapulted Zara into the global spotlight and placed her among the most promising young equestrian athletes in India.

Her journey continues to ascend, as Zara has recently qualified for both Show Jumping and Dressage in the upcoming Junior Nationals, scheduled to take place in Delhi this December. With a natural affinity for riding and an unbreakable bond with her horses, Zara’s dedication to equestrian sports is evident in her unwavering commitment and her pursuit of excellence. She is passionate about pushing her limits, embodying the spirit of an athlete who aspires to achieve greatness on the international stage.

A Legacy of Strength and Inspiration

Both Chinmayi and Zara are exemplary representatives of the military community, reflecting the values that their families and upbringing have instilled in them. As “army kids,” they have embraced the rigorous discipline and determination that the military lifestyle demands, allowing these virtues to propel them toward greatness in their chosen sports. Their journeys are testaments to the resilience, hard work, and passion that define the lives of many children raised in military families.

As we celebrate Children’s Day, Chinmayi and Zara’s stories remind us of the power of dreams, dedication, and the support of family and mentors in helping young athletes reach their full potential. Their accomplishments inspire not only the children of military families but also young people across the nation who aspire to excel in sports and academics alike.

These young champions prove that with dedication and a support system rooted in discipline and encouragement, anything is possible. Their stories encourage other young athletes to chase their dreams, rise above challenges, and, like Chinmayi and Zara, strive to make a mark on the world.
