Divine Eco-Innovation: Bikaner Crafts Ganesh Idols from Cow Dung, Blending Faith with Sustainability
Bikaner: As Ganesh Chaturthi approaches, homes across India are preparing to welcome Lord Ganesha with devotion, music, and celebration. But in Bikaner, Rajasthan, a unique tradition is turning heads and setting a new benchmark for sustainable celebration — idols of Lord Ganesha made entirely from cow dung.
What makes these idols extraordinary is not just their craftsmanship but the powerful message they carry — that faith and environmental consciousness can go hand in hand. Artists in Bikaner, under the banner of Godhan Mitra Sansthan, are creating eco-friendly idols that are 100% natural, free from harmful chemicals, and decorated without synthetic colors.
The process is as symbolic as it is sustainable. These idols can be immersed at home itself, simply by placing them in a vessel of water. The dissolved mixture, far from polluting rivers or lakes, acts as a natural fertilizer when poured into the soil. The innovation doesn’t stop there — each idol contains bilva (bael) seeds embedded inside. After immersion, these seeds can sprout into new trees, offering a living legacy of devotion.
Mahendra Joshi of Godhan Mitra Sansthan explains, “This is not just about tradition, it’s about responsibility. Each idol nurtures both faith and the environment.” His associate, Shubham Joshi, adds that the demand has gone beyond Bikaner, reaching metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, as well as Rajasthan’s own Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur. The team is also expanding through online platforms to ensure access nationwide.
The initiative has drawn appreciation at the highest levels, with the Chief Minister praising it as a shining example of “Local for Vocal” — a people’s movement that blends culture with sustainability.
Beyond Ganesh idols, the Sansthan is also producing cow dung idols of Goddess Durga for Navratri, along with eco-friendly items like dung bricks, chowkis, and gau-kashth (compressed cow dung logs) designed for use in cremations, reducing dependence on wood and saving trees. These bricks are particularly innovative: rooms built with them remain up to 12% cooler in the scorching desert heat, making them highly practical as well as sustainable.
Government support has strengthened this eco-initiative, as cow dung-based products have been exempted from GST, making them affordable for common households.
This movement reflects a broader truth — festivals, while deeply spiritual, can also become platforms for social and environmental responsibility. The Bikaner idols are proof that faith, art, and ecology can be woven into one harmonious tradition. They symbolize not only divine blessings but also a renewed commitment to protect the Earth.
पर्यावरण और आस्था का संगम: बीकानेर में गोबर से बनी गणेश प्रतिमाएं
बीकानेर। गणेश चतुर्थी का पर्व आते ही हर घर में बप्पा के स्वागत की तैयारियाँ शुरू हो गई हैं। लेकिन राजस्थान के बीकानेर में इस पर्व की तैयारी कुछ अलग ही ढंग से हो रही है। यहां गोधन मित्र संस्थान के कलाकार गाय के गोबर से भगवान गणेश की अद्भुत प्रतिमाएं बना रहे हैं।
ये मूर्तियां सिर्फ आस्था का प्रतीक नहीं बल्कि पर्यावरण-संरक्षण का संदेश भी देती हैं। पूरी तरह प्राकृतिक रूप से बनी इन प्रतिमाओं में किसी भी प्रकार के कृत्रिम रंग या रसायन का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता।
इन मूर्तियों की खासियत यह है कि इन्हें घर पर ही आसानी से विसर्जित किया जा सकता है। एक बड़े बर्तन में पानी डालकर मूर्ति का विसर्जन हो जाता है और जो जल तैयार होता है वह पौधों के लिए प्राकृतिक खाद का काम करता है। इतना ही नहीं, इन मूर्तियों में बेल पत्र के बीज भी डाले जाते हैं, ताकि विसर्जन के बाद पौधे अंकुरित होकर पर्यावरण को नई जिंदगी दें।
गोधन मित्र संस्थान के महेंद्र जोशी बताते हैं कि यह पहल न सिर्फ धार्मिक परंपरा को सुरक्षित करती है बल्कि प्रकृति के साथ भी जुड़ाव बनाती है। उनके साथी शुभम जोशी कहते हैं कि बीकानेर से बाहर भी इनकी मांग बहुत अधिक बढ़ रही है। दिल्ली, मुंबई, कोलकाता, चेन्नई जैसे महानगरों के साथ ही राजस्थान के जयपुर, उदयपुर और जोधपुर तक इनकी लोकप्रियता पहुंच चुकी है। संस्थान अब ऑनलाइन बिक्री भी शुरू कर रहा है।
मुख्यमंत्री ने भी बीकानेर दौरे के दौरान इन प्रतिमाओं की सराहना करते हुए इसे “लोकल फॉर वोकल” का शानदार उदाहरण बताया।
संस्थान गणेश प्रतिमाओं के साथ-साथ नवरात्रि हेतु मां दुर्गा की प्रतिमाएं भी गोबर से बना रहा है। इसके अलावा यहां गोबर से बने ईंटें और पाटे भी तैयार किए जाते हैं। इन ईंटों से बने कमरों में सामान्य ईंटों की तुलना में 12% तक तापमान कम रहता है। वहीं, गोकाष्ठ का निर्माण भी किया जा रहा है ताकि अंतिम संस्कार के लिए लकड़ी की जगह इसका उपयोग हो सके और पेड़ों की कटाई घटे।
सरकार ने भी गोधन से निर्मित उत्पादों को जीएसटी से मुक्त कर दिया है जिससे यह आम लोगों की पहुंच में आ सकें।
बीकानेर की यह पहल यह संदेश देती है कि त्यौहार और परंपराएं केवल आस्था तक सीमित नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे हमें पर्यावरण और समाज के प्रति हमारी जिम्मेदारी भी याद दिलाती हैं। यह वास्तव में कला, संस्कृति और प्रकृति का अद्भुत संगम है।
