IAF’s First Dronathon-2026 in Pokhran Signals a New Era of Unmanned Warfare, Indigenous Drone Power Takes Centre Stage

By Defence Journalist Sahil | T.I.N. NETWORK

JAISALMER, RAJASTHAN: The Indian Air Force has opened a new chapter in India’s rapidly evolving unmanned warfare capability with the first edition of Dronathon-2026, a three-day operational technology event being held at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan from September 14 to 16. Unlike conventional defence exhibitions centred around fighter aircraft, helicopters, tanks or missile systems, Dronathon-2026 places the spotlight firmly on the technologies that are increasingly reshaping the modern battlefield — Unmanned Aerial Systems, Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems, loitering munitions, autonomous platforms, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare and advanced unmanned traffic management solutions.

The event represents a significant attempt by the IAF to bring India’s rapidly expanding defence-technology ecosystem directly into contact with operational users. Domestic manufacturers, start-ups, technology companies and innovators have been invited to demonstrate their systems not merely through static displays, but through live trials under realistic field conditions at the Pokhran range. The objective is to understand what these systems can actually deliver when subjected to operational environments and to identify technologies that can eventually translate into meaningful battlefield capability.

The opening ceremony was attended by senior Air Force leadership, with Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Vice Chief of the Air Staff, serving as the chief guest. During the inauguration, he unveiled the “IAF Unmanned & Autonomous Systems Roadmap”, signalling the service’s broader approach towards integrating unmanned and autonomous technologies into future air operations. The roadmap and the demonstrations together underline a fundamental shift in the way the IAF is looking at the air domain — where manned aircraft will increasingly operate alongside unmanned systems rather than functioning as isolated platforms.

POKRAN RANGE BECOMES THE TEST BED FOR INDIA’S NEXT-GENERATION DRONE WARFARE

The choice of the Pokhran Field Firing Range for Dronathon-2026 is particularly significant. Rather than limiting companies to controlled indoor demonstrations or exhibition halls, the event provides an operationally relevant environment in which unmanned platforms can demonstrate their capabilities in real terrain and realistic conditions. For defence users, this distinction is crucial because a drone that performs well in a controlled demonstration may face completely different challenges when confronted with distance, heat, dust, electronic interference, communication limitations, contested airspace and rapidly changing battlefield conditions.

The Pokhran range therefore becomes more than simply a venue for Dronathon-2026. It functions as a practical laboratory where the armed forces and Indian industry can examine whether emerging technologies are mature enough to address actual operational requirements. Live demonstrations of UAS, C-UAS and one-way attack systems allow the military to observe the performance of platforms, sensors, communications systems, navigation technologies, payloads and countermeasures in conditions that more closely resemble the battlefield.

The event also creates an opportunity for companies to receive direct feedback from operational users. This user-industry interaction is one of the central ideas behind Dronathon-2026. Instead of developing systems in isolation and presenting them to the military only after completion, the event creates a mechanism through which developers can understand operational challenges and modify their products accordingly.

FROM ISR TO LOITERING MUNITIONS — THE FULL SPECTRUM OF UNMANNED CAPABILITY ON DISPLAY

The demonstrations at Dronathon-2026 cover a wide spectrum of unmanned technologies. These include Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance systems, loitering munitions, logistics drones, autonomous platforms, electronic-warfare-capable UAS, advanced payload systems, mapping and surveillance platforms and counter-drone technologies.

ISR drones have become particularly important in modern military operations because they provide commanders with persistent surveillance and battlefield awareness without necessarily exposing manned aircraft or personnel to the same level of risk. Equipped with electro-optical, infrared and other specialised sensors, such platforms can potentially remain over an area for extended periods and transmit information to operators or command networks.

Loitering munitions represent another major area of interest. These systems combine characteristics of drones and precision weapons, allowing them to search for or wait over an area before engaging a designated target. Their growing importance in contemporary conflicts has demonstrated how relatively smaller unmanned systems can create disproportionate operational effects when integrated with intelligence, surveillance, targeting and communications networks.

Logistics drones, meanwhile, represent the non-kinetic side of unmanned warfare. Their potential applications range from transporting supplies and ammunition to difficult terrain to supporting isolated military positions and reducing the risks involved in conventional resupply missions. In a country with challenging geographical conditions across deserts, mountains, forests and high-altitude areas, autonomous logistics systems could provide significant operational advantages.

COUNTER-DRONE TECHNOLOGY EMERGES AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BATTLEFIELD REQUIREMENTS

If drones have transformed the battlefield, the rapid proliferation of drones has simultaneously created a new security problem — how to detect, identify, track and neutralise hostile or unauthorised unmanned systems.

Dronathon-2026 therefore places considerable emphasis on Counter-UAS and counter-drone technologies. These systems are designed to address different stages of the drone threat, beginning with detection and identification and extending towards tracking and neutralisation. Depending on the technology, counter-drone systems may employ combinations of sensors, electronic warfare, communications disruption, kinetic interception and other methods.

The significance of these systems has increased dramatically as drones have become cheaper, more accessible and increasingly capable. A sophisticated military force can no longer assume that air threats will come only in the form of traditional fighter aircraft, cruise missiles or ballistic missiles. Small unmanned platforms can create new challenges because of their size, flexibility and ability to operate at relatively low altitudes.

For the IAF, which has a critical responsibility for India’s air defence architecture, the ability to manage this expanding unmanned threat is becoming an increasingly important component of airspace security.

AI AND AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION TAKE CENTRE STAGE

One of the defining features of Dronathon-2026 is the emphasis on Artificial Intelligence and autonomous technologies. Modern unmanned warfare is moving beyond remotely controlled aircraft towards systems capable of performing increasingly complex tasks with reduced human intervention.

AI-enabled systems can potentially assist drones in navigation, object recognition, surveillance, route planning, data processing and decision-support functions. Autonomous navigation can become particularly important when communication links are degraded or unavailable, allowing platforms to continue performing predefined missions or navigating through challenging environments.

However, the importance of autonomy is not limited to individual drones. The future battlefield is increasingly expected to involve networks of multiple unmanned systems working together, exchanging information and supporting manned platforms. This creates the possibility of highly connected systems in which surveillance drones, communications platforms, electronic-warfare systems and strike platforms contribute to a common operational picture.

Dronathon-2026 provides the IAF with an opportunity to examine how far Indian industry has progressed in this direction and how these technologies can be integrated into operational structures.

THE IAF’S UNMANNED AND AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS ROADMAP SIGNALS A LONG-TERM SHIFT

The unveiling of the IAF Unmanned & Autonomous Systems Roadmap during the event is perhaps one of the most important developments associated with Dronathon-2026. It indicates that unmanned warfare is being considered not as an isolated technology programme but as part of the Air Force’s broader future operational architecture.

The battlefield of the future is unlikely to be divided simply between manned aircraft and ground-based weapons. Instead, a layered ecosystem involving manned aircraft, unmanned aircraft, autonomous systems, sensors, satellites, electronic-warfare platforms, communications networks and artificial intelligence is expected to operate as an integrated system.

For the IAF, this means developing the ability to employ unmanned platforms across multiple missions while simultaneously protecting its own airspace from hostile drones. Such a transformation requires not only hardware but also new doctrines, training, communications architecture, command-and-control mechanisms, maintenance systems and regulatory frameworks.

The roadmap unveiled at Dronathon-2026 is therefore significant because it provides a broader framework within which these technologies can eventually be evaluated and integrated.

OPERATION SINDOOR HIGHLIGHTS THE CHANGING CHARACTER OF WARFARE

The experience of Operation Sindoor has further intensified attention on unmanned warfare and counter-drone capabilities. The operation highlighted the increasingly complex role that unmanned systems can play in modern military operations and reinforced the need for India to possess both offensive drone capabilities and robust counter-drone architecture.

The lessons emerging from contemporary warfare demonstrate that drones can be used for surveillance, targeting, electronic warfare, attack missions and battlefield logistics. At the same time, hostile unmanned systems can threaten military installations, critical infrastructure and populated areas.

This dual nature of the drone revolution means that India cannot focus exclusively on acquiring offensive platforms. It must simultaneously develop the ability to detect and neutralise hostile systems while ensuring that legitimate unmanned operations can continue safely.

Dronathon-2026 directly addresses this requirement by bringing together both sides of the technological equation — UAS and Counter-UAS.

AIR MARSHAL PREMKUMAR: DRONATHON IS NOT JUST A TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION

Addressing participants and industry representatives, Air Marshal Premkumar emphasised that Dronathon-2026 should not be viewed simply as another technology exhibition. According to him, the fundamental purpose of the event is to establish direct interaction between the IAF, industry, start-ups and innovators so that emerging technologies can be assessed against real operational requirements.

The central question is not simply whether a company has developed a technologically advanced drone. The more important question for a military user is whether that system can reliably perform the required mission under realistic battlefield conditions.

This distinction is crucial for India’s defence-industrial ecosystem. A large number of start-ups and technology companies are now entering the unmanned systems sector, but converting innovative prototypes into reliable military equipment requires extensive testing, refinement and user feedback.

Dronathon provides a mechanism for that process. Companies can demonstrate their capabilities, the IAF can assess operational utility, developers can receive feedback and promising systems can subsequently undergo further development.

UNMANNED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DRONE REVOLUTION

Dronathon-2026 is not limited to combat drones. One of the event’s important demonstrations involves Unmanned Traffic Management, or UTM, reflecting the growing challenge of managing an increasingly crowded unmanned airspace.

With drones becoming more common for military, commercial, industrial, agricultural and civilian applications, India’s skies are expected to see a dramatic increase in unmanned traffic. This creates a complex requirement: legitimate drone operations must be enabled while unauthorised or potentially hostile drones must be identified and dealt with.

Air Marshal Premkumar pointed towards precisely this challenge, noting that the increasing number of drones operating in Indian airspace requires an ecosystem capable of supporting legitimate UAS operations while addressing rogue or unauthorised systems.

The IAF has developed a multimode UTM solution designed to address the requirements of unmanned aerial systems and associated airspace management. Demonstrating this capability at Dronathon-2026 reflects the understanding that the drone revolution cannot be managed solely through individual military platforms. It requires an integrated airspace-management architecture.

INDUSTRY, START-UPS AND THE ARMED FORCES COME TOGETHER AT POKHRAN

Another major objective of Dronathon-2026 is to strengthen the relationship between India’s defence industry and the armed forces. Over the past several years, India’s start-up ecosystem has expanded significantly into areas such as drones, robotics, artificial intelligence, sensors, communications and autonomous systems.

Many of these companies are capable of developing innovative technologies rapidly, but the transition from commercial innovation to military capability requires close cooperation with the end user.

The IAF’s direct engagement with these companies can help bridge this gap. Developers can understand what military users actually require, while the armed forces can gain access to emerging technologies without waiting for lengthy conventional development cycles.

The event also supports the broader national objective of Mission Atmanirbhar Bharat, with greater emphasis on indigenous design, development and manufacturing of critical defence technologies.

POKRAN DEMONSTRATIONS SHOW THE IMPORTANCE OF REALISTIC TESTING

A key strength of Dronathon-2026 is that participating systems are being demonstrated in a field environment rather than merely presented through brochures, models or controlled indoor displays.

For unmanned systems, realistic testing is particularly important. Factors such as temperature, dust, wind, terrain, communications range, navigation accuracy, sensor performance, endurance and payload effectiveness can significantly affect operational performance.

The Pokhran environment provides an opportunity to examine these factors more closely. For companies, successful demonstrations can provide valuable validation of their technologies. For the IAF, the trials can help determine which systems deserve further evaluation or development.

This process can ultimately help shorten the distance between an innovative idea and an operationally useful military capability.

CIVILIAN APPLICATIONS ALSO FEATURE IN INDIA’S DRONE VISION

Although Dronathon-2026 has a strong military focus, unmanned technology has applications well beyond combat. Demonstrations and technologies showcased at the event also point towards civilian uses including disaster management, infrastructure inspection, mapping, surveying and regional surveillance.

In disaster-hit areas, drones can potentially provide rapid aerial assessment without exposing rescue personnel to unnecessary risks. In infrastructure management, unmanned platforms can assist in inspecting difficult-to-access structures. In mapping and surveying, drones can generate detailed geographic information rapidly.

The same technological ecosystem that supports military drones can therefore contribute to civilian applications and economic development.

This dual-use nature makes the development of indigenous drone technology strategically important for India. Investment in military unmanned systems can also strengthen domestic capabilities in sensors, batteries, artificial intelligence, communications, navigation, robotics and advanced manufacturing.

FROM DRONES TO DRONE ECOSYSTEM — INDIA’S NEXT CHALLENGE

The real significance of Dronathon-2026 goes beyond individual platforms demonstrated at Pokhran. The larger challenge is to create an integrated Indian unmanned warfare ecosystem.

A modern drone is not simply an airframe with a motor and camera. Its operational effectiveness depends on sensors, navigation, data links, command-and-control architecture, electronic protection, payloads, batteries or propulsion, software and increasingly AI.

Similarly, an effective counter-drone system cannot operate in isolation. It must be able to detect potential threats, classify them, track them and coordinate an appropriate response.

The future battlefield is therefore likely to be determined not simply by who has the best individual drone, but by who can build the most effective network connecting drones, sensors, operators, command systems and counter-drone assets.

Dronathon-2026 appears designed to accelerate precisely this conversation between the Indian military and technology ecosystem.

SECOND EDITION PLANNED WITHIN APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS

The IAF has also indicated that Dronathon-2026 is not intended to be a one-time event. A second edition is planned within approximately six months, demonstrating the intention to maintain continuous engagement with the unmanned-technology sector.

This recurring format could become particularly valuable because drone technology is evolving at an exceptionally rapid pace. New sensors, AI algorithms, autonomous systems, propulsion technologies, communications systems and counter-drone solutions are emerging continuously.

A periodic operational forum would allow the IAF to repeatedly evaluate new technologies, compare solutions and provide feedback to developers.

It could also encourage Indian companies to move faster in developing systems specifically tailored to the requirements of India’s armed forces and operating environment.

THE MESSAGE FROM POKHRAN: FUTURE WARFARE WILL BE UNMANNED, NETWORKED AND AI-ENABLED

Dronathon-2026 ultimately sends a powerful message about the direction in which military technology is moving. The age in which air power was measured predominantly through fighter aircraft numbers and missile inventories is being supplemented by a new technological dimension in which unmanned systems, autonomy, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare and counter-drone capabilities are becoming increasingly decisive.

At Pokhran, the IAF is not simply watching drones fly. It is examining how unmanned systems can become part of a much larger operational architecture.

The significance of the event therefore lies in its focus on the complete cycle — from indigenous innovation and live testing to operational feedback, autonomous technology, counter-drone capability, airspace management and long-term integration.

For India, the objective is clear: build an indigenous ecosystem capable of producing the technologies required for the future battlefield while reducing dependence on foreign systems.

Dronathon-2026 may therefore be remembered not merely as another defence technology event, but as an important step in the IAF’s transition towards a manned-unmanned, network-centric and increasingly autonomous model of air warfare.

By Defence Journalist Sahil | T.I.N. NETWORK

IAF Unmanned & Autonomous Systems Roadmap

UNMANNED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT:
