Erdogan’s Kashmir Rant Rekindles Diplomatic Tensions, India Warns Türkiye on Meddling
New Delhi/Ankara — In yet another provocative statement that has drawn sharp condemnation from New Delhi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again raked up the Kashmir issue, offering unsolicited remarks and attempting to internationalize what India firmly asserts is its internal matter.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Ankara, President Erdogan claimed that Türkiye held “comprehensive talks” with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue and “explored ways to assist.” This remark is the latest in a series of repeated interventions by the Turkish leader, reflecting Ankara’s pro-Pakistan tilt and pan-Islamic posturing that India has long viewed as diplomatically intrusive and ideologically biased.
Erdogan stated, “We believe a balanced approach to the issues between India and Pakistan can bring the parties closer to a solution and help prevent renewed escalation. As Türkiye, we hope for a resolution based on human rights with the involvement of international organisations.” He added that Türkiye was “ready to play its part if requested” and desired to “see peace prevail in South Asia.”
India Sees Red: Strong Objection Expected
While New Delhi is yet to officially respond, high-level sources in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have indicated that a strong diplomatic démarche is under preparation to be lodged with the Turkish envoy in India. The MEA, in previous instances, has categorically rejected any third-party interference in the Kashmir issue, reiterating that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and that all decisions pertaining to the region are sovereign matters of the Indian state.
This time, Erdogan’s remarks come at a time when India is preparing for crucial multilateral engagements and pushing for stronger ties with Europe and Central Asia. Turkey’s consistent alignment with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, coupled with its calls for international mediation, are being viewed in India as deliberate attempts to curry favour with the Islamic world and score geopolitical brownie points at India’s expense.
Pattern of Provocation: Erdogan’s Track Record on Kashmir
President Erdogan has made similar remarks in the past, notably at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2019, 2020, and 2021, each time triggering a diplomatic backlash from India. In February 2020, India had summarily rejected Erdogan’s controversial speech in Pakistan’s Parliament, calling it a gross interference in India’s internal affairs.
India’s long-held position is that the Kashmir issue is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan, as agreed under the Shimla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration. Turkey’s repeated endorsement of Pakistan’s narrative not only disregards these treaties but also undermines regional stability by encouraging cross-border propaganda and extremist sentiments.
Türkiye’s ‘Ummah Brotherhood’ and Strategic Calculations
Experts believe that Erdogan’s latest remarks are less about genuine concern for Kashmiris and more about projecting himself as a global Islamic leader. His assertive posturing on issues affecting the Muslim world — from Palestine to Rohingyas to Kashmir — aligns with his vision of reviving the Ottoman-era influence through neo-Ottomanism and pan-Islamic alliances.
India also suspects growing intelligence and defence cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey, especially in the context of drones, cyber warfare, and proxy support networks. Ankara’s overtures to Pakistan are seen as part of a broader strategy to challenge traditional power centres like Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Islamic world by positioning itself as a vocal defender of Muslim causes.
Implications for India-Turkey Ties
India-Turkey bilateral ties have suffered in recent years, despite robust economic engagement. Ankara’s increasing closeness with Islamabad and its positions on sensitive issues like Kashmir, Article 370, and Indian domestic laws have led to a cooling of diplomatic warmth. Turkey’s repeated attempts to bring Kashmir to multilateral forums, including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have been met with strong Indian resistance.
Diplomatic watchers believe that unless Turkey tones down its rhetoric and respects India’s sovereignty, the strategic trust deficit will only widen. India has also increased its engagement with Greece, Armenia, and Cyprus — countries with which Turkey has longstanding disputes — in what some analysts see as India’s quiet but calculated diplomatic pushback.

नई दिल्ली/अंकारा — तुर्की के राष्ट्रपति रजब तैयब एर्दोआन ने एक बार फिर कश्मीर मुद्दे को लेकर विवादास्पद बयान देकर भारत की नाराज़गी को न्योता दे दिया है। पाकिस्तान के प्रधानमंत्री शहबाज़ शरीफ के साथ एक संयुक्त संवाददाता सम्मेलन में एर्दोआन ने कश्मीर पर “विस्तृत चर्चा” की बात कही और “मदद के रास्ते तलाशने” की बात कहकर भारत के आंतरिक मामलों में सीधा हस्तक्षेप किया है।
एर्दोआन ने कहा, “हम मानते हैं कि भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच संतुलित दृष्टिकोण अपनाने से समाधान के रास्ते खुल सकते हैं और फिर से तनाव बढ़ने से रोका जा सकता है। तुर्की के तौर पर हम मानवाधिकार आधारित समाधान की उम्मीद करते हैं, जिसमें अंतरराष्ट्रीय संगठनों की भूमिका हो। यदि कहा गया, तो तुर्की अपनी भूमिका निभाने को तैयार है।”
भारत की तीखी प्रतिक्रिया की तैयारी
हालांकि भारत सरकार की ओर से अभी तक आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया नहीं आई है, लेकिन विदेश मंत्रालय के उच्च पदस्थ सूत्रों ने संकेत दिया है कि तुर्की के राजदूत को तलब कर कड़ा विरोध दर्ज कराया जाएगा। भारत ने हमेशा यह स्पष्ट किया है कि जम्मू-कश्मीर भारत का अभिन्न हिस्सा है, और इस पर कोई भी फैसला देश की संप्रभुता के अंतर्गत आता है।
एर्दोआन के बयान ऐसे समय में आए हैं जब भारत बहुपक्षीय मंचों पर अपनी भूमिका को विस्तार देने और यूरोप तथा मध्य एशिया से रिश्ते मजबूत करने की दिशा में सक्रिय है। तुर्की द्वारा बार-बार पाकिस्तान के पक्ष में खड़ा होना और कश्मीर जैसे संवेदनशील मुद्दे को अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर उठाना, भारत के लिए अस्वीकार्य और उकसावे की राजनीति मानी जा रही है।
पहले भी कर चुके हैं विवादित टिप्पणियां
यह पहली बार नहीं है जब एर्दोआन ने कश्मीर मुद्दे पर विवादित बयान दिया है। संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा में 2019, 2020 और 2021 में भी उन्होंने कश्मीर को लेकर बयान दिए थे, जिन्हें भारत ने कड़े शब्दों में खारिज किया था। फरवरी 2020 में पाकिस्तान की संसद में दिया गया उनका भाषण भी भारत द्वारा “आंतरिक मामलों में हस्तक्षेप” करार दिया गया था।
भारत का स्पष्ट रुख है कि कश्मीर मसला भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच द्विपक्षीय मामला है, जिसे शिमला समझौता और लाहौर घोषणा के तहत हल किया जाना है। तुर्की द्वारा बार-बार पाकिस्तान के पक्ष में बयान देना इन समझौतों की भावना के खिलाफ है और क्षेत्रीय स्थिरता को खतरे में डालता है।
‘उम्मा भाईचारा’ और एर्दोआन की इस्लामिक राजनीति
विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि एर्दोआन की चिंता असल में कश्मीरियों की नहीं, बल्कि खुद को मुस्लिम दुनिया का नेता साबित करने की है। उनकी यह रणनीति ‘नव-उत्तरी साम्राज्यवाद’ और इस्लामी एकता की भावना के तहत बनाई गई है, जिसमें वे कश्मीर, फिलिस्तीन और रोहिंग्या जैसे मुद्दों पर बोलकर खुद को इस्लामी दुनिया का अगुवा साबित करना चाहते हैं।
भारत को यह भी संदेह है कि पाकिस्तान और तुर्की के बीच रक्षा एवं खुफिया सहयोग बढ़ा है, खासकर ड्रोन तकनीक, साइबर युद्ध और प्रॉक्सी नेटवर्क के क्षेत्र में। ऐसे में तुर्की का भारत विरोधी रुख केवल वैचारिक नहीं बल्कि रणनीतिक भी हो सकता है।
भारत-तुर्की संबंधों पर असर
हाल के वर्षों में भारत और तुर्की के रिश्तों में कड़वाहट बढ़ी है। जबकि आर्थिक संबंध सक्रिय हैं, लेकिन कश्मीर, अनुच्छेद 370 और नागरिकता कानून जैसे मुद्दों पर तुर्की के बयानों ने रिश्तों को प्रभावित किया है। तुर्की द्वारा कश्मीर को OIC जैसे मंचों पर उठाने की कोशिशों को भारत ने बार-बार अस्वीकार और अस्वीकार्य बताया है।
भारत अब ग्रीस, साइप्रस और आर्मेनिया जैसे देशों से रिश्ते मजबूत कर रहा है, जो तुर्की के परंपरागत विरोधी माने जाते हैं। यह भारत की रणनीतिक प्रतिक्रिया के तौर पर देखा जा रहा है।
