Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 at Bikaner’s Mahajan Field Firing Ranges Validates Indian Army’s Layered Counter-Drone Combat Readiness
Live. Lethal. Layered: Indian Army Tests Counter-Drone Capabilities in Realistic Battlefield Environment
Bikaner, Rajasthan: At the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Bikaner, the Indian Army conducted Exercise Ambar Kavach 4, a specialised exercise focused on validating the combat readiness of formations and troops against the rapidly evolving threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles and drone-based systems. The exercise showcased the Army’s growing emphasis on developing a robust, layered and integrated counter-drone capability capable of responding to the changing character of modern warfare.
The exercise was designed around a simple but critical operational philosophy — Detect, Disrupt and Destroy. These three stages represent the essential components of a modern counter-drone response, beginning with the identification and tracking of an aerial threat, followed by disruption of its ability to operate effectively, and culminating in its neutralisation when required.
Conducted under simulated battlefield conditions at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 provided formations and troops an opportunity to test and refine their tactics, techniques and procedures against drone threats in a realistic operational environment.
Drone Warfare Emerges as a Major Battlefield Challenge
The increasing use of drones in contemporary conflicts has fundamentally changed the nature of battlefield surveillance, targeting and strike operations. Small unmanned aerial systems can provide persistent observation, identify troop concentrations, monitor movement and, in certain configurations, carry payloads capable of threatening personnel, vehicles and critical military infrastructure.
The proliferation of commercially available and military-grade unmanned systems has made the drone threat particularly complex. Modern armed forces therefore require the ability to identify hostile drones quickly, determine their threat level and respond before they can achieve their intended mission.
Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 reflects the Indian Army’s recognition that countering drones cannot depend on a single weapon or system. Instead, an effective defence requires multiple layers of detection, assessment, disruption and neutralisation working together under battlefield conditions.
‘Detect, Disrupt, Destroy’ Forms the Core of the Counter-Drone Approach
The central operational concept demonstrated during Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 was “Detect. Disrupt. Destroy.” Each stage addresses a different part of the counter-drone challenge and contributes to a layered defensive architecture.
The first stage, Detect, focuses on identifying the presence of an unmanned aerial system and establishing sufficient situational awareness to understand the nature and location of the threat. Early detection is critical because the amount of time available to respond to a small and potentially fast-moving drone can be extremely limited.
The second stage, Disrupt, involves preventing the hostile unmanned system from effectively carrying out its mission. The ability to interfere with or otherwise degrade the effectiveness of an incoming drone provides an additional opportunity to protect troops and critical assets.
The final stage, Destroy, represents the neutralisation of a drone when other measures are insufficient or when the threat requires immediate physical defeat. Together, the three stages create a layered response designed to provide multiple opportunities to stop a hostile aerial system.
Exercise Focuses on Testing and Validating Tactics, Techniques and Procedures
A primary objective of Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 was to test, refine and validate tactics, techniques and procedures, commonly referred to as TTPs, required for countering unmanned aerial vehicles and drone-based threats.
Training under realistic conditions allows troops and formations to evaluate whether established procedures are effective when confronted with the complexity and uncertainty of a battlefield. It also provides commanders and operators with an opportunity to identify gaps, improve coordination and refine responses.
Such validation is particularly important in counter-drone warfare because the threat environment continues to evolve rapidly. New drone designs, operating methods and battlefield applications can create challenges that require continuous adaptation in military doctrine, training and operational procedures.
Multi-Domain Defence Approach Strengthens Counter-Drone Preparedness
Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 incorporated a multi-domain defence approach, bringing together different elements required to counter unmanned aerial threats. The exercise focused on the integration of active and passive counter-drone measures along with tactical simulations and precision target acquisition.
The emphasis on multiple defensive layers is significant because no single counter-drone measure can be expected to defeat every possible threat. Different types of unmanned systems may operate at different altitudes, speeds and ranges, while their signatures and methods of operation can vary considerably.
A layered architecture provides commanders with multiple options and helps ensure that a threat detected at one stage can be engaged through another layer if the initial response is unsuccessful.
Real-Time Tactical Simulations Replicate Battlefield Pressure
One of the important features of the exercise was the use of real-time tactical simulations under simulated battlefield conditions. Such training is designed to bring greater realism to counter-drone operations and test how troops respond when faced with rapidly changing tactical situations.
In an actual battlefield, drone threats may emerge with little warning and may be accompanied by other operational activities. Troops must therefore be capable of maintaining situational awareness while simultaneously dealing with multiple threats and competing battlefield demands.
Realistic simulations allow personnel to practise decision-making and coordination under pressure while enabling formations to evaluate the effectiveness of their established counter-drone procedures.
Active and Passive Counter-Drone Measures Integrated into Training
The exercise also focused on the integration of active and passive counter-drone measures. This reflects the broader requirement for military formations to protect themselves through multiple complementary methods.
Active measures are designed to directly counter an identified threat, while passive measures contribute to reducing vulnerability and improving survivability. When employed together as part of a layered architecture, these approaches can enhance the overall resilience of troops and critical assets against drone-based surveillance and attack.
The integration of these measures during training enables troops to understand how different components of a counter-drone system can complement one another rather than operate in isolation.
Precision Target Acquisition Under Simulated Combat Conditions
Another key focus area of Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 was precision target acquisition. Accurately identifying and locating an aerial threat is essential for effective engagement, particularly when operating in complex battlefield environments.
The exercise provided an opportunity to test the ability of formations and troops to acquire and respond to simulated aerial targets while operating under conditions designed to replicate the pressures of combat.
Precision and speed are both critical in counter-drone operations. Delayed identification can provide an incoming drone with additional time to reach its intended target, while inaccurate assessment can result in resources being directed against the wrong threat. Training therefore plays an important role in developing the ability to make rapid and accurate tactical decisions.
Mahajan Field Firing Ranges Provide a Realistic Training Environment
The Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Bikaner provide an extensive training environment for the Indian Army to conduct realistic field exercises and validate operational capabilities. The location has been used for various military training activities and offers conditions suited to large-scale field training.
Conducting Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 at Mahajan allowed participating formations and troops to train in a field environment rather than relying solely on classroom instruction or controlled indoor simulations. This is particularly relevant for counter-drone warfare, where battlefield geography, visibility, movement and tactical conditions can influence the effectiveness of detection and response.
Field-based training therefore contributes to converting theoretical procedures into practical operational capability.
Counter-Drone Warfare Becomes Central to Future Battlefield Preparedness
The growing importance of drones has made counter-drone warfare an increasingly important component of military preparedness. From surveillance and reconnaissance to precision attacks, unmanned systems are changing how information is gathered and how targets can be engaged.
The relatively low cost and increasing availability of certain drone technologies have also created new challenges for conventional military formations. A force may potentially face a large number of unmanned systems rather than a small number of traditional high-value aerial threats.
This changing environment requires armed forces to develop scalable, flexible and layered counter-drone capabilities. Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 demonstrates the Indian Army’s continuing efforts in this direction.
From Detection to Neutralisation: Building a Layered Shield
The philosophy behind Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 is based on ensuring that a hostile drone has to overcome multiple layers before it can threaten troops or critical assets. The process begins with detection and situational awareness, moves towards disruption of the threat and, when necessary, culminates in physical neutralisation.
Such a layered approach reduces reliance on a single point of failure and provides commanders with multiple response options. It also allows different defensive capabilities to be integrated into a broader counter-drone architecture.
The ultimate objective is to ensure that unmanned aerial threats are identified and addressed before they can create unacceptable risks to military personnel, equipment or critical infrastructure.
Exercise Highlights Indian Army’s Focus on Operational Readiness
Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 is significant not simply because it demonstrates counter-drone technology, but because it focuses on the combat readiness of formations and troops. Modern military capability depends on the ability of personnel to use technology effectively within an operational framework.
Training exercises provide commanders with opportunities to assess the preparedness of troops, evaluate procedures, identify shortcomings and improve coordination. They also allow personnel to build familiarity with complex systems and develop confidence in responding to emerging threats.
By conducting dedicated counter-drone exercises, the Indian Army is strengthening the human, tactical and organisational dimensions of its response to unmanned aerial threats.
Preparing for the Future Battlefield
Future battlefields are expected to feature increasing levels of automation, unmanned systems, networked sensors and rapidly evolving aerial threats. The ability to detect and counter such systems will therefore become an increasingly important component of military operations.
Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 represents part of the Indian Army’s effort to prepare formations and troops for this changing operational environment. The emphasis on TTP validation, multi-domain defence, active and passive countermeasures, real-time tactical simulations and precision target acquisition reflects the complexity of the modern counter-drone mission.
The exercise also highlights the importance of continuous adaptation. As drone technology evolves, counter-drone capabilities and operating procedures must evolve alongside it.
‘Forever Victorious’: Indian Army’s Message of Readiness
The message emerging from Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 is one of preparedness and resilience. At Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, troops trained to confront a threat that is rapidly becoming an integral part of modern warfare.
The philosophy of “Detect. Disrupt. Destroy.” captures the layered nature of the response, while the broader objective remains clear — protect troops, safeguard critical assets and maintain operational effectiveness in an increasingly drone-dominated battlefield environment.
Exercise Ambar Kavach 4 therefore represents another step in strengthening the Indian Army’s counter-drone preparedness and ensuring that its formations remain ready to operate against emerging aerial threats.

Live. Lethal. Layered:
Disrupt. Destroy.”
‘Detect, Disrupt, Destroy’
Tactics, Techniques and Procedures
इसमें active और passive counter-drone measures के साथ real-time tactical simulations तथा precision target acquisition को शामिल किया गया।
Real-Time Tactical Simulation
Precision Target Acquisition
Operational Readiness
TTP validation, multi-domain defence, active और passive countermeasures, real-time tactical simulations और precision target acquisition पर ध्यान यह दर्शाता है कि counter-drone warfare अब सैन्य training और operational preparedness का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बन चुका है।
‘Forever Victorious’:
“Detect. Disrupt. Destroy.”
