Heavy Rains Lash Bikaner: Relief for Farmers, Urban Areas Struggle with Waterlogging

For the past two days, continuous rains have transformed the face of Bikaner district. While the farmers in rural areas welcomed the downpour with joy and relief, the urban population, particularly in Bikaner city, faced massive waterlogging and civic disruption.
According to the Meteorological Department, Bikaner recorded 57.4 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, a figure that has drastically changed both the city’s landscape and the rural agricultural prospects. Meteorologist Sanjeev Thanvi confirmed that the rains are part of a strong monsoon system that has been hovering over western Rajasthan.
Urban Bikaner Submerged
The rains have brought life to a standstill in low-lying areas of the city. Places such as Kotgate, Ginni Nani, and Junagarh Fort premises turned into water bodies, with residents struggling to commute. Streets were submerged, creating difficulties for two-wheeler riders, pedestrians, and shopkeepers.
Traffic snarls were reported at several junctions, while overflowing drains exposed the inadequacies of the city’s drainage system. Power outages were reported in multiple colonies, forcing residents to spend hours without electricity.
For urban Bikaner, the rains have once again highlighted the gap between administrative preparedness and monsoon reality. Civic authorities now face the dual challenge of providing relief while preventing a health crisis due to stagnant water.
A Boon for Farmers
In sharp contrast, the villages surrounding Bikaner — including Lunkaransar, Bajju, Mahajan, Nokha, Pugal, and Nal — witnessed celebrations in the fields. Farmers, who had been waiting for rains to sow their kharif crops, rushed to their farms with renewed energy.
This rainfall is expected to give a major push to crops like cluster beans (guar), groundnut, and moth beans, which depend heavily on monsoon showers. Health authorities have also issued warnings about potential outbreaks of water-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and diarrhoea if preventive steps are not taken immediately.

Bikaner, located in the arid Thar Desert belt, traditionally depends on erratic monsoon showers. Historically, the region has witnessed cycles of drought and limited rainfall, making agriculture a risky profession. बीकानेर जिले में लगातार दो दिन से हो रही बारिश ने मानो पूरे इलाके का मंजर बदल दिया है। जहां गांवों में किसानों के लिए यह बारिश किसी वरदान से कम नहीं है, वहीं शहर में जलभराव और अव्यवस्था ने आमजन को परेशान कर दिया है।
मौसम विभाग के अनुसार बीकानेर में पिछले 24 घंटों में 57.4 मिलीमीटर बारिश दर्ज की गई है। मौसम वैज्ञानिक संजीव थानवी ने बताया कि पश्चिमी राजस्थान पर बना मानसून सिस्टम फिलहाल सक्रिय है और आने वाले दिनों में भी बारिश की संभावना बनी हुई है।
शहर डूबा, सड़कें बनी तालाब
बीकानेर शहर के निचले इलाकों में हालात बिगड़ गए। कोटगेट, गिन्नानी, जूनागढ़ फोर्ट क्षेत्र सहित कई हिस्सों में पानी भर गया।
सड़कों पर घुटनों तक पानी भर जाने से लोगों की आवाजाही मुश्किल हो गई। वाहन चालक परेशान रहे, पैदल चलने वालों को दिक्कत हुई और व्यापारिक गतिविधियां भी प्रभावित हुईं।
बारिश के साथ ही कई इलाकों में बिजली गुल हो गई, जिससे लोगों को परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ा। एक बार फिर नगर निकायों की व्यवस्थाओं की पोल खुल गई।
किसानों के लिए राहत की बौछार
गांवों में यह बारिश उम्मीदों की नई किरण लेकर आई। लूणकरणसर, बज्जू, महाजन, नोखा, पूगल और नाल क्षेत्र में जैसे ही पानी बरसा, किसान खेतों की ओर निकल पड़े।
खासकर ग्वार, मूंगफली और मोठ जैसी खरीफ फसलों के लिए यह पानी किसी संजीवनी से कम नहीं है। किसान तेजी से बुवाई कार्य में जुट गए हैं।
बीकानेर का ग्रामीण अंचल जो अक्सर सूखे और अकाल से जूझता रहा है, वहां यह बारिश किसानों के चेहरे पर मुस्कान और खेतों में नई जान लेकर आई है।
प्रशासन के लिए चुनौती
जहां ग्रामीण खुश हैं, वहीं प्रशासन के लिए यह बारिश परीक्षा की घड़ी साबित हो रही है। शहर में जगह-जगह पानी भर गया है, नालियां जाम हैं और नागरिक परेशान हैं।
स्वास्थ्य विभाग ने भी चेतावनी दी है कि यदि पानी लंबे समय तक रुका रहा तो डेंगू, मलेरिया और जलजनित रोग फैल सकते हैं।
बीकानेर और बारिश का रिश्ता
रेगिस्तानी इलाके में बसे बीकानेर के लिए बारिश हमेशा से ही जीवनदायिनी मानी जाती है। इतिहास गवाह है कि कभी-कभार अच्छी बारिश होने पर ग्वार और मोठ की फसलें इतनी प्रचुर मात्रा में हुईं कि गांवों की तस्वीर बदल गई।
इस बार की बारिश भी किसानों के लिए उसी आशा और समृद्धि की उम्मीद जगा रही है।
