HONOURING OUR REAL HEROES: EX-SERVICEMEN FELICITATION CEREMONY IN JAMMU

In a heartwarming display of gratitude and respect, the Indian Army’s prestigious Tiger Division organized a Veterans Outreach Program cum Ex-Servicemen Felicitation Ceremony on 18th October 2024 in Jammu. This special event was dedicated to honouring the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of Gallantry Awardees and Disabled Soldiers who have selflessly served the Nation.

The ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Western Command. His participation highlighted the significance the Indian Army places on acknowledging the contributions of its veterans, and it added a sense of reverence to the occasion.

The event was meticulously organized in collaboration with the War Wounded Foundation (WWF), a key organization supporting wounded soldiers and veterans. Over 250 Ex-Servicemen from the region, including decorated war heroes and disabled veterans, attended the event, making it a grand and emotional reunion of brave hearts who have served the country in various capacities over the years.

In addition to the ceremonial honours, the event served a crucial functional purpose. Representatives from several important government departments, including the Zila Sainik Board, nationalized banks, and State Government offices, were present to provide veterans with critical information about various government welfare schemes and benefits.

The Indian Army also played a pivotal role in addressing the concerns and needs of the veterans. Departments like the Record Offices, Department of Indian Army Veterans, Veterans Sahayata Kendra, and Army Welfare Placement Organization participated actively, interacting with the Ex-Servicemen to help resolve any outstanding queries. Notably, a team from the Defence Accounts Department was also available to assist with pending pension-related issues, ensuring that no veteran left the event with unresolved concerns. Meanwhile, the local Military Hospital deployed a dedicated team to attend to any medical concerns of the veterans, offering immediate assistance to those in need.

Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar conveyed his deep appreciation for the veterans’ immense contribution to the security and sovereignty of the Nation. He noted that the event was not just a ceremonial occasion but a reminder of the Army’s steadfast commitment to caring for its veterans. He emphasized that these brave individuals, who once stood on the frontlines defending the country, are the true heroes and a source of inspiration for the younger generation.

In a special gesture, the Army Commander personally felicitated the war heroes, presenting them with mementos of recognition for their valor. Additionally, modified scooters and autos were distributed to disabled soldiers as part of the welfare program, enabling them to enhance their mobility and lead independent lives. The distribution of these modified vehicles was a thoughtful initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for soldiers who had suffered injuries in the line of duty.

The informal interactions between the GOC-in-C and the veterans added a personal touch to the event, with hearty exchanges of ideas and experiences. This fostered a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect, further strengthening the bond between the Indian Army and its veterans. The veterans, in turn, expressed their gratitude for the continued support from the Army and shared their thoughts on various issues that affect the ex-servicemen community.

This event provided a vital platform for Ex-Servicemen to directly engage with government officials and Army representatives, addressing issues related to pensions, welfare, employment, and healthcare. It ensured that the veterans were not only recognized for their past sacrifices but were also provided with the resources and support necessary to lead dignified and fulfilling lives after their service.

The Veterans Outreach Program cum Felicitation Ceremony stands as a testament to the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to its veterans and war heroes. The initiative reaffirmed the nation’s deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by its soldiers and highlighted the need for continued efforts to support and honor these brave individuals.

As the event concluded, there was a palpable sense of pride, unity, and mutual respect. The veterans left the venue with a renewed sense of belonging, knowing that the Indian Army continues to stand by them, just as they once stood in defense of the nation.
