ICGS Varaha Docks in Kenya’s Mombasa, Strengthens India-Kenya Maritime Security Cooperation in the Western Indian Ocean

By Defence Journalist Sahil

MOMBASA, KENYA: Reinforcing India’s growing maritime engagement with East Africa, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varaha made a port call at Mombasa, Kenya, from October 26 to 29, 2026, during its overseas deployment to the East African region. The visit aimed to strengthen maritime security cooperation, enhance operational coordination and deepen bilateral relations between India and Kenya.

ICGS Varaha, an indigenously designed and built Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), represents India’s expanding capabilities in domestic defence shipbuilding. During the visit, the ship’s Commanding Officer called on the Director General of the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral maritime security frameworks and enhancing operational synergy between the two agencies.

Professional engagements between the Indian Coast Guard crew and their Kenyan counterparts covered key operational areas, including Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), marine pollution response and maritime law enforcement. The programme also featured demonstrations of firefighting and damage-control procedures, alongside practical training in Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) tactics.

These engagements provided an opportunity to exchange operational expertise, share best practices and improve interoperability in responding to common maritime challenges. The cooperation assumes particular significance in the Western Indian Ocean, where maritime agencies play a critical role in ensuring navigational safety, enforcing maritime laws and responding to emergencies at sea.

As part of its outreach activities, ICGS Varaha also hosted guided tours for visitors, showcasing the vessel’s technological capabilities, onboard systems and operational readiness. The initiative highlighted India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and its commitment to the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

The port call reflects India’s broader efforts to strengthen partnerships with countries across the Global South and promote a secure, stable and cooperative maritime environment. It is also aligned with India’s SAGAR vision—Security and Growth for All in the Region—which emphasises regional cooperation, maritime security and shared prosperity.

Through overseas deployments and professional exchanges, the Indian Coast Guard continues to advance maritime cooperation, mutual trust and operational interoperability with partner nations across the Indian Ocean Region.
